00:00This afternoon, we will be joined by Maser Reyak, a senior citizen who continues to inspire
00:29as a coach of Yaoyang Martial Arts.
00:32Let's find out her story and how this sport has established her life here at Live Better.
00:39Yaoyang, an outstanding Filipino martial art, was established in 1972 under the guidance
01:01of the well-known Grand Master Napoleon Fernandez.
01:04His name, inspired by the dance of death, reflects the speed, power, and natural flow of movements.
01:14One of the most well-known fighters of Yaoyang in the 1980s is Maser Reyak.
01:20From 1979 to 1984, she worked hard and dedicated herself under the guidance of the Grand Master.
01:29As time went by, Maser Reyak's unparalleled love for this art remained.
01:36Under the guidance of the Grand Master, she opened her own gym as part of her mission
01:42to preserve and spread the values of Yaoyang, our own art of competition.
01:49I was in Yaoyang in 1978, late 1978, I believe November of 1978.
01:59I grew up in a community where there was a great Yaoyang,
02:05and actually that was another Grand Master, a nephew of Grand Master Napoleon,
02:10by the name of Boy Fernandez.
02:13He was an actor for a short time.
02:17He was the one who inspired me.
02:22He was a very disciplined person.
02:26So, I was only 14, 15.
02:29I told him to teach me.
02:30So, he taught me in my garage.
02:34So, little by little, once in a week, once in two weeks,
02:38until the time came when he said,
02:41If you really want to be good and learn,
02:44I will bring you to the gym, to the uncle, Napoleon Fernandez,
02:49which is his uncle now.
02:50So, he brought me to the gym, and that's where I met Grand Master.
02:54And that's how I started.
02:56It's a very funny story because when I got there,
03:01because his nephew introduced me,
03:04and he said, this is my neighbor, this is a good boy.
03:07Grand Master told me, I will never forget,
03:09he said, okay, you will spar.
03:11You are the one who teaches this.
03:13So, you will spar.
03:15If you don't dance,
03:17to my student, you are free.
03:20So, the funny thing is,
03:21when I sparred, I didn't dance,
03:24and his student danced.
03:26The one who taught me, which is Master Boy,
03:29was very, very proud.
03:30From then on, I was free in the gym.
03:35Because he was good at dancing,
03:38he was always ready for training,
03:40and he sacrificed his time and strength
03:43to achieve what he was hoping for.
03:47I said, I think I'm going to die here.
03:49I almost suffocated breathing.
03:51There was no stopping of punches,
03:53there was no stopping of kicks,
03:54there was no stopping of making the body suffer.
03:58I went through all of that,
04:00that there are people who collapse in training
04:02because the principle of Master is
04:04you really need to have a hard time
04:07because there's nothing easy.
04:09If you apply that in life,
04:11that's where you will see the meaning of training.
04:14I was amazed by the dance when I was training.
04:17What I can't forget is
04:19every time someone trains,
04:21because I'm new,
04:22I say, this is so good.
04:24The punching bag is almost broken
04:26when you kick, when you punch.
04:28After that, someone will come and say,
04:31this is better.
04:32There are a lot of people who will be good.
04:34I said, I want to be like this.
04:36And then the following day,
04:37the next three days,
04:38the next four days,
04:39there will still be people who will be better.
04:42I said, this is a different class.
04:44I want to reach their level.
04:47So, it motivates me,
04:50inspires me so much
04:52to train really, really hard
04:55because I want to be considered
04:57among the best dancers during that time.
05:01As a young student,
05:02you can't not love.
05:04Second, the honor.
05:06That's number one,
05:07the character of a person.
05:09They say that the character
05:11is something that can be done
05:13even if no one is watching.
05:15You're doing a good job
05:17and you're doing a good job.
05:19You're doing a good job
05:21and you're doing a good job.
05:23You're doing a good job
05:25and you're doing a good job.
05:27You're doing a good job
05:29and you're doing a good job.
05:31This is what's most important
05:33to a person.
05:35So, this is what we always explain
05:37to our students
05:39as their masters
05:41that our honor is important.
05:45One of the reasons
05:47why he remains healthy
05:49is the support
05:51and support
05:53that he is also an advisor.
05:56I am very thankful
05:58that I was involved in Yaowian.
06:00Because once you're Yaowian,
06:02you'll always be a Yaowian.
06:04For me,
06:06maybe if I didn't do Yaowian,
06:08I would have a big chance now.
06:10I wouldn't be this fit.
06:12Number one,
06:14I maintained
06:16my training
06:18because I don't stop
06:20propagating Yaowian.
06:22Yaowian is a Filipino martial arts.
06:24In our country,
06:26we embrace a lot of martial arts
06:28that are not our own.
06:30This is our own,
06:32made by a Filipino
06:34for the Filipino.
06:36That's the reason
06:38why maybe until now
06:40I'm still in Yaowian
06:42because I don't stop propagating.
06:44For me,
06:46this is what we should be proud of.
06:48This is good.
06:50This is deadly.
06:52Maybe that's the reason
06:54that I'm still here
06:56and it benefits me a lot.
06:58Because of that,
07:00I'm forced to train people.
07:02I'm forced to train by myself
07:04for myself.
07:06Maybe that's the reason
07:08that I really want to propagate it.
07:10I don't stop training.
07:12That's what motivates me.
07:14His ultimate goal
07:16is to produce
07:18a champion.
07:20Personally, I haven't been able to
07:22become a champion yet.
07:24That's my ultimate goal.
07:26They became
07:28part of the championship
07:30where my fighters
07:32fought for the championship
07:34and they were not allowed
07:36to win to become a champion
07:38in that category.
07:40For example, lightweight,
07:42strawweight, things like that.
07:44We were challenged
07:46several times in the championship
07:48and we were not allowed to fight.
07:50Maybe there's still something
07:52that I'm lacking
07:54for my fighters
07:56to play.
07:58Maybe training,
08:00there are many reasons
08:02but I won't stop
08:04until I become a champion.
08:06More than becoming a champion
08:08in martial arts,
08:10what's more important
08:12to him is becoming a champion
08:14in life.
08:17Training in martial arts
08:19especially in Buhawi,
08:21this is where I explain
08:23to them that
08:25the training
08:27will be useful
08:29in facing life.
08:31The hardships
08:33that you will face
08:35will be useful
08:37in facing life.
08:39Fighting in life
08:41is not easy.
08:43There are many failures,
08:45many challenges.
08:47If you overcome that training,
08:49you're all set.
08:51To most of my students,
08:53I'm proud to say
08:55that's where I became a champion.
08:57Since I started training
08:59in 2004,
09:01most of them
09:03have already finished
09:05their studies,
09:07they have their own businesses,
09:09they have families
09:11that raise their children.
09:13This is my proudest moment
09:15when my student visited me
09:17and he will tell me
09:19his achievements.
09:21For example,
09:23I have a student who became active
09:25for 3 years,
09:27but he suddenly disappeared.
09:29After 3 years, he suddenly appeared
09:31and told me,
09:33Sir, how are you?
09:35I will give you a gift
09:37to welcome you.
09:39What happened? Why did you suddenly disappear?
09:41I am proud to say
09:43that I have a home now.
09:45I have overcome
09:47all the difficulties
09:49that I faced in Saudi Arabia
09:51because of Yawian.
09:53That is my proudest moment.
09:55I have experienced
09:57many things like that
09:59with my students.
10:01For me,
10:03they became champions
10:05in their lives
10:07and I became a champion too.
10:09Even though
10:11Master Ray is a senior citizen,
10:13you can't compare his age
10:15to his enthusiasm and zeal.
10:17According to him,
10:19this is because of the substantial
10:21food he eats.
10:23I believe that
10:25I was raised to be more
10:27young and strong.
10:29There is no intake of sugar
10:31because sugar is
10:33what I feel.
10:35I have an intake of sugar
10:38because I have a sugar rush
10:40and I move a lot.
10:42After that,
10:44when you run out of sugar,
10:46you feel like a sleepy cow.
10:48It means that
10:50your energy is not good.
10:52You need to get your energy
10:54from fats.
10:56You need to eat right.
10:58You need to eat right carbohydrates.
11:00You shouldn't
11:02eat low carbs.
11:04When you train hard,
11:06it's not easy.
11:08You need to
11:10moderate everything.
11:12The only thing
11:14that you shouldn't moderate
11:16is sugar
11:18because that is the culprit
11:20of our body.
11:22We should remove sugar.
11:24He learned not to abuse
11:26his body during training.
11:28I don't have enough
11:30to maintain
11:32supplements
11:34and vitamins.
11:36Proper and good food.
11:40I might not be able
11:42to do this anymore.
11:44I still need
11:46to do everything right.
11:48When I train,
11:50I don't abuse it
11:52anymore.
11:54I just do what I can.
11:56Sometimes, I lose myself
11:58because of the situation
12:00where
12:02I have to move
12:04more than I should.
12:06I suffer.
12:08I suffer for one week
12:10of that pain.
12:12It's not good.
12:14My students
12:16suffer more
12:18because I can't face them anymore.
12:20I let them rest.
12:22So,
12:24I have to be careful.
12:26I don't abuse it anymore.
12:28I just need to do the right thing.
12:30I know the limitations.
12:34He also has an advice
12:36for those who want to lose weight.
12:38Don't hesitate
12:40to train regardless of your age.
12:42I have a program
12:44for those who are 50 years old.
12:46I have a program
12:48for those who are 40 years old.
12:50I have a program for those who are 30 years old.
12:52Don't be afraid.
12:54Don't be shy.
12:56Especially for women,
12:59I'm a woman.
13:01That's only for men.
13:03Totally wrong.
13:05Don't limit yourself.
13:07You can do a lot.
13:09Don't worry about your age.
13:11I have a program
13:13for those who are older than you.
13:15You can feel your strength
13:17and be proud
13:19of yourself.
13:21If you take medicine,
13:23you won't be able to take it anymore.
13:25The right exercise
13:27and the right food
13:31I also have a plan meal
13:33for you.
13:35Just come to the gym
13:37or to any of the gyms
13:39of Nyawian.
13:41Never too late.
13:43Health is very important.
13:45Our health is our wealth.
13:47Believe it or not,
13:49that's our wealth.
13:51Master Rhea is an example
13:53of dedication and hard work
13:55In every step
13:57of her journey
13:59in the field of martial arts,
14:01she gives the true meaning
14:03of discipline, courage
14:05and perseverance.
14:07More than being a teacher,
14:09she is an inspiration.
14:11A light that guides
14:13her Nyawian students
14:15and anyone who dreams
14:17to achieve their dreams.
14:19That's where our episode
14:21ends this afternoon.
14:23My name is Meg Siozon,
14:25encouraging everyone to live better.
