00:00I think that's the big message from this one, is that grief is, it is a scary thing.
00:10It is something that we all universally will experience at some point or another, in whatever
00:14form it comes.
00:15It could be a toddler losing a toy, it can be the profound loss of a loved one, it can
00:20be loss of opportunity, it doesn't necessarily have to be death, but it can be the idea that
00:24something that was there isn't there anymore, and that impermanence is just something that
00:28you have to accept and grief is part of it.
00:31We struggle to do our best with this incredible piece of literature and Dylan's extraordinary
00:39adaptation of it.
00:40We are trying to do something whereby in the culture anyone can see themselves in it and
00:44express or go along that journey or relate to it.
00:47It's not just about a dad and two children, it's about anyone who's been there.
00:50Well, The Thing With Feathers is based on a beautiful book called Grief is a Thing With
00:54Feathers, which deals the story of a father and two young sons at the moment when they've
00:59just suddenly lost the mother of the house, and he becomes convinced that his house is
01:04being haunted by a presence which is derived from his work, and he's writing about this
01:10crow character taken from Ted Hughes' poetry.
01:13So it's a kind of horror movie, but about a family that are dealing with this point
01:18in their lives, but it's funny and moving and scary.
01:22I think, for me, the film is very different to the book, but it has the same DNA and it
01:27has the same tone and it has the same compassion and kindness, but in the very act of adapting
01:36I'm putting some of myself into it.
01:38When I was writing the script I was a new father and I was seeing my two kids grow up
01:46together in their relationship and I was actually looking at childhood from a totally new perspective.
02:22And I was like, okay, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this,
02:26I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this,
02:29I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this,
02:32I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this,
02:35I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this,
02:38I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this,
02:41I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this, I'm going to do this,
