World premiere of 'Joy' about pioneering creators of IVF

The cast and crew of 'Joy' attend the film’s world premiere at London Film Festival. The film starring Bill Nighy and James Norton tells the true story of the three British pioneers behind the world's first IVF baby. Director Ben Taylor and husband and wife writing duo Rachel Mason and Jack Thorne all comment on how personal making the film was, as their children were all conceived through IVF. Speaking to AFP on the red carpet, Bill Nighy comments on the controversy the development of the treatment sparked at the time, adding that the film’s release is 'timely,' as abortion rights are clamped down on in the United States.

00:00But also, in this country, it's not that simple either, you know, that we deny so much to
00:24so many.
00:25Louise Brown, you know, who's here tonight, you know, she's a working-class woman, you
00:29know, IVF has become a luxury, and the thing that Bob, Jean and Patrick said again and
00:35again and again was, infertility is a medical condition, it's a medical condition and it
00:41deserves medical attention, and we don't do that here either.
00:44So yes, what's happening over there is important, what's happening here is also important.
00:48Yeah, no, yeah, oh no, it was, I mean, I knew it was controversial when she was born, I
00:53remember that, but I didn't, until I read the script and started to talk to Jack, the
00:57writer, I didn't know how vicious the opposition was and how fierce it was.
01:02And to know that that science has its roots in these three, the hard grit and determination
01:09of these three scientists is hugely humbling, and they have all these pictures of all the
01:14babies that they've created, like, every single one of them has brought about the joy which
01:20Louise Brown brought about, and then some, and you know, there's a statistic at the end
01:24of the film, I'm not going to give it away, but like 12 million IVF babies have, it's
01:30incredible, so, yeah, going to that clinic, it's a place of joy, it's also a place of
01:37disappointment and pain, not every IVF story ends happily, and so it's a very charged and
01:41emotional place, but, you know, I'm just grateful that I live in a country where that clinic exists.
01:46I mean, I'm glad for the three pioneers, they finally got the recognition they deserve,
01:52because without them, I wouldn't be here, nor would 12 million of us, so pleased for
01:59their families, very close contact with them, so, it's like really a big extended family,
02:06so it's really, really nice.
02:08It was a real responsibility, it's a film, a conversation that is relevant to, you know,
02:18the majority of the people on this planet, so a lot of heart and care and effort went
02:26into making it.
02:28It's a very personal story to me, because we've got, me and my wife have two babies
02:34already made possible by IVF, so I came to it with just an enormous sense of gratitude
02:43and wanted to do anything I could to sort of repay it somehow, which involved me hopefully
02:50not messing it up, but it was...
