The FAA has confirmed that an American Airlines regional jet collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. Emergency officials say they're coordinating a search and rescue operation in the Potomac River.

00:00We are coming on the air with breaking news out of Washington.
00:03The FAA confirming an American Airlines regional jet has collided with a Blackhawk helicopter
00:08near Reagan National Airport.
00:10This happened just over an hour ago.
00:12Emergency officials say they're coordinating a search and rescue operation in the Potomac
00:16River.
00:17We don't have yet information about casualties, but the FAA says this American Airlines plane,
00:21which had left Kansas, collided in midair with that helicopter while on approach to
00:26a runway here at Reagan, DCA as it's known locally.
00:30I want to bring in our aviation correspondent, Tom Costello, who is joining us now.
00:33Tom, a very active situation, the FAA, the NTSB, local fire and emergency responders
00:39there as we speak.
00:41This is an all-out extreme emergency in Reagan, at Reagan Airport, and the water's just off
00:47of it here in Washington, D.C.
00:48We've now got confirmed reports that American Eagle Flight 5342 operated by PSA.
00:56It is a regional jet carrying between 50 and 100 people from Wichita into Reagan Airport,
01:01was hit or was involved in a midair collision involving, apparently, an Army helicopter.
01:08That is reported to be a Blackhawk helicopter of some make and model.
01:14At this point, it is a full response with the fire department, rescue department from
01:20not only Washington, D.C., but Alexandria, Virginia, Arlington, Virginia.
01:25The airport fire rescue teams.
01:27And you know, Hallie, you live in the city as well as I do.
01:30There is a massive mutual aid program that goes into effect, every police and fire agency
01:36immediately responding.
01:37Tom, we were looking at some live images there of that response as we are continuing to follow
01:42this breaking news.
