00:00Almost two months after Syria was liberated from the Bashar al-Assad regime,
00:05the country's new leader has promised citizens a new Syria, one that prioritises civil peace.
00:14We will work to form an inclusive transitional government that reflects the diversity of Syrian
00:20men, women and youth, and to build the institutions of a new Syria until we reach the stage of free
00:26and fair elections. In his first televised address as interim president, Ahmed al-Shara
00:33reiterated plans to form a legislative assembly to govern during the transitional period,
00:39until a new constitution is approved, and to launch a national dialogue conference
00:45to incorporate various views on Syria's future political program.
00:50Another priority is what he called genuine transitional justice.
00:57Prosecuting the criminals who spilled Syrian blood and committed massacres and crimes against us,
01:02whether those who hid inside the country or fled abroad.
01:08Earlier on Thursday, al-Shara received a visit from the Qatari emir,
01:12who, according to a royal court statement, pressed him to form an inclusive government.
01:18Qatari officials had previously welcomed the announcement of al-Shara's presidency,
01:23and vowed to continue providing support with humanitarian services, infrastructure and
01:28electricity. The former leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebel group was appointed to
01:33the top role on Wednesday, when it was also announced Syria would dissolve its armed
01:38factions that helped overthrow Assad, and integrate them into state institutions.
