00:00I'm Caio Barnard and I'm a writer and director.
00:05I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that Bradford was City of Culture 2025
00:10because I love the city.
00:12It's got this kind of very rich cultural history
00:15and it's also got this incredible kind of countryside
00:19and landscape all around it that's so accessible.
00:22I grew up in the Bradford area.
00:24I remember I had my first ever kiss in the Bradford ice rink,
00:28which may be too much information, but yeah, so Bradford is close to my heart.
00:33I've made three films in Bradford.
00:35I guess you could call it a Bradford trilogy.
00:38I made The Arbor, The Selfish Giant and Ali and Ava.
00:43Northern Soul is part of Bradford 2025.
00:46It's at the Pictureville Cinema and it's a season of films
00:50that have all got some kind of connection with the north of England.
00:53There's kind of connective tissue between the films
00:56All the films are directed by women apart from one and all written by women
01:01and I guess what they all have in common is a kind of urgency
01:05in terms of the authorship, in terms of the story that they tell.
01:09The season starts in the 60s with A Taste of Honey
01:13and goes through to typist artist Pirate King, which was from 2022.
01:18Though they span decades, they all feel very pertinent and relevant to now.
01:24I think that's one of the fantastic things about watching them again
01:29and to curate the season, that each one of them feels like they speak to now.
