Despite fewer sightings, drones are still visible in New Jersey’s skies every night, says Belleville Mayor Michael Melham.

00:00And Mayor Milhom, I mean, are you seeing fewer drones in the night skies now than you were,
00:06say, a month ago? Or is the situation really completely unchanged?
00:10It's a little bit of both. I mean, depending on the night you look out, again, we don't
00:13have many clear nights here in northern New Jersey, especially this time of the year.
00:17But we did have a couple this past weekend. And every single time I look up at any time,
00:21including last night, including the night before, you can see drones in the sky. I'm
00:26not seeing the swarm that I saw in mid-December, let's just say. Not seeing the swarm. But
00:31any time at night, if the night is clear, I can look up at the sky and point out drones.
00:36And I vet those. You know, I now know what airplanes look like when they're landing in
00:41our airspace. I mean, keep in mind, where we are in northern New Jersey, in Belleville,
00:46New Jersey, we border the city of Newark. The city of Newark is the largest city in
00:50New Jersey. There's an international airport there, Newark International Airport. We're
00:54also dead smack in the middle of the airspace for JFK, for LaGuardia, and a regional airport
00:59called Teterboro. We're used to seeing things flying. We're used to seeing planes landing
01:03and taking off. We know what they look like. They have headlights on them. They have lights
01:07on them. These are just red and green blinking lights on the wings. And if you catch it at
01:12the right time, there's a second or so where they're completely dark. Planes are never
01:17completely dark, especially in this airspace. There's no reason for a plane to go completely
01:22dark.
