Derren Howard and Henry Bryant discuss the latest ins and outs at Brighton and Hove Albion
Transcript
00:00Thanks for joining us on a Transfer Deadline Day special for Brighton and Hove Albion.
00:07Thanks for joining us, Henry.
00:09So we've had a few early moves on the Transfer Deadline Day.
00:14So we've had confirmation of Brighton have signed the Greek striker Stefanos Tismas from
00:22Nuremberg.
00:23He won't be joining until the summer, so he will remain on loan.
00:28But it's a £22 million deal, I think, Henry, or an initial payment of £20 million and
00:33then with some add-ons as well.
00:36Yeah, it seems as though he's a good one for the future, but it sort of coincides with
00:42him signing him and then Evan Ferguson going out on loan as well, doesn't it, to West Ham?
00:47What are your thoughts about that situation?
00:49Yeah, it definitely seems like one thing's been confirmed to get Evan Ferguson sort of
00:56out of the club, at least for the rest of this season on loan.
01:00Another sort of announcement comes in, this time from the club, to say that, yeah, we've
01:05got a new striker that is set to be coming in sort of after this season.
01:09I think that'll be an interesting one to see how he can get on.
01:13But it's another young striker, second division of the German league.
01:18So he's another player that's not proven himself in a top league, but has the potential to
01:24do these things.
01:27So it'll be interesting to see how that works out for the Albion.
01:30I think, yeah, he's, you know, similar age to sort of the young players we've been getting
01:36in different positions.
01:37So it's a very bright signing to be having him and it'll be interesting to see sort of
01:42how he's able to do in the Premier League if he does get the opportunity next season.
01:48Yeah, yeah, no, it'll be an interesting one.
01:50They tend to sign these type of players, don't they?
01:52They're not ready to go just yet.
01:53And it takes, you know, it takes a lot of development to see the best from them.
01:58Obviously, Evan Ferguson on the way out.
02:00Do you think West Ham was the right move for him?
02:02Obviously, reuniting with the former manager, Graham Potter, who gave him his debut during
02:06his time at Brighton.
02:09He'll just hope to get some game time there, won't he, at West Ham?
02:16Yeah, exactly.
02:17I think that link with Graham Potter straight away, you know that there's going to be, you
02:21know, some sort of playing time for him at West Ham.
02:24He's going to be prioritised.
02:26He's going to get minutes.
02:27And I think that that's really important for him at the moment.
02:30As Fabian Herzog was saying in some of his press conferences of recent, Evan just wants
02:36to play football, whether that's here or somewhere else.
02:40And yeah, West Ham seems like a really good option for him.
02:43It's still Premier League experience for a club that, you know, as big as West Ham.
02:47And I think that that will be, you know, in all sides, a great move.
02:52And Brighton have done well, actually, because they haven't said that there's an option to
02:56buy in this.
02:57Yeah, it seems like it's been reported like there won't be an option to buy, which works
03:01well for them, because if Evan does play well, then they'll be able to get him back and utilise
03:05him next season.
03:07So I think that they've done a bit of sort of safety, safety sort of guard in there.
03:12But they've done well.
03:13Yeah, yeah.
03:14He's obviously contracted, isn't he, to Brighton until 2029.
03:19So there's still...
03:20All the options are open for him, really, isn't it?
03:22If he does well at West Ham, they could make up an approach, or if he does well, his transfer
03:27fee could increase, or he can come back in the Brighton team, depending on what happens.
03:31You know, Danny Welbeck is, you know, in the last stages, I guess, of his career now.
03:36Jal Pedro, what happens to him in the summer?
03:38We just don't know.
03:39So yeah, it's all options still open for Ferguson.
03:44There's also talk of the young winger from Sunderland, Henry, Tom Watson.
03:50Brighton are said to be sort of in and around the £8 million, £10 million.
03:54They've had one bid rejected for him and they're expected to go back throughout the day today
04:00and maybe increase that offer.
04:02Again, it's another youngster, isn't it, a young player who's had a bit of experience
04:06in a championship.
04:07I think he's played ten, made ten appearances this season, two goals for Sunderland, one
04:12for the future again, isn't it?
04:13Yeah, definitely.
04:16And maybe this is Bryson trying to be clever in the fact that there have been reports that
04:21Simon Odinga isn't happy with the playing time he's getting at the moment with the club.
04:25There's been approaches from Marseille, Lens as well.
04:29So there, you know, there clearly is some demand and interest.
04:33And if reports are correct, then Simon Odinga might not be a Brighton player.
04:38Maybe, you know, maybe it's this window, maybe it's the next window.
04:42So maybe that's a little bit of precaution from Brighton yet again to make sure that
04:46they've got this sort of constant rotation of young players coming through.
04:51It's probably likely that he'd end up going back on loan somewhere else with the fact
04:55that he's only made that many appearances for Sunderland.
04:59But you never know with Brighton.
05:01They're always up for giving young players an opportunity.
05:03And this could be another winger that maybe in a year or two's time, we go, wow, that
05:08was a great signing.
05:10Yeah, yeah.
05:11It just seemed like typical Brighton, didn't it?
05:13They get hammered 7-0 and then the next news is that it's a teenager, a teenage winger
05:18coming in from Sunderland.
05:22But one defender that they did sign, though, Kashin Rai from Derby.
05:27I think the initial fee was around about nine million, but there could be a few add-ons there.
05:32It's obviously very highly rated.
05:33He's been doing well for Derby, obviously, in the Championship and in League One the
05:39season before.
05:42And I think, obviously, you can't judge everything on that performance on Saturday, but Brighton
05:47did need a defender, didn't they?
05:49They'd been a bit lacking in that area this season.
05:52Yeah, definitely.
05:54I think that the pace of the Premier League is slowly getting to some of those centre-backs
05:59and having another young centre-back option to go alongside Van Geck is all the better
06:05for Brighton and just helps to switch up, especially with Julio Eagle that's out for
06:10the rest of the season with injury.
06:11So it just gives a little less sort of pressure for those centre-backs like Veltman and Dunk
06:18so that there is another young centre-back that can sort of come in and play.
06:23And we know that there's been a lot of injuries and if these continue, then there is a chance
06:30that Kashin might be getting more game time than maybe he's going to expect come the end
06:35of the season for the Albion.
06:36We could be walking away at the end of the season thinking, wow, I've played a lot more
06:40games than I expected.
06:43He sees this as a great opportunity and in his interview for the Albion, he said he just
06:49loves the way the club is structured.
06:51I think he knows that there is a lot of opportunity for game time here.
06:54He's highly rated and apparently Brighton had been looking at him for quite a few windows.
06:58So it'll be interesting to see how he does for the club.
07:02And it's another great addition, I think.
07:05I know that people want that Premier League experience, but I think that with the way
07:10that the club's modelled, he's a great signing.
07:12And just having that sort of fresh pair of legs in the back line will be greatly appreciated.
07:19I think so. I think he's a good age as well to come in.
07:22Like you say, Dunk, I don't know whether he's playing for an injury at the moment or not,
07:26but he's struggled with injuries this season.
07:29Adam Webster's obviously had his struggles as well.
07:31So I agree.
07:32I think, I think Cachin coming in would breathe some life into that defence and hopefully
07:38he will do well.
07:40And I agree with you.
07:41I think he'll get more game time than maybe some people think at the moment.
07:46But overall, a fairly steady window.
07:49I didn't expect them to do too much business.
07:51Obviously, last summer, 200 million plus was spent and we still haven't seen the best from
07:57some of those players due to various reasons.
08:00But yeah, pretty, pretty steady window overall.
08:03Henry, would you agree?
08:04Julio and Sisso obviously left on loan to Ipswich as well.
08:08Yeah, it's a Tony Bloom classic.
08:10This is, it's, you know, sort of in the summer transfer window, do most of your dealings.
08:15And I think he just is known for not having the busiest January transfer windows in general.
08:22He doesn't enjoy them as much.
08:24Yeah, I think as well with the fact that Brighton has spent 200 million pounds plus on, on players
08:32in the summer transfer window that's just gone, I think he's sort of honing back a little
08:37bit.
08:38There's been some interesting moves, you know, with some of the younger players that haven't
08:41been getting game times going to sort of championship sides or going, you know, further afield.
08:46It's good to see that Brighton are getting, you know, a few younger reinforcements and
08:52signing people for the future like that, that new Greek striker.
08:56I think that would be a great addition come the end of the season when we're thinking
09:01or Brighton fans will be thinking, where's this striker?
09:04And they've already got their answer there because he's, he's going to be coming into
09:08that.
09:09So yeah, pretty, pretty standard one, unless there's some crazy deals that happen and Brighton
09:14were able to keep hold of Matoma.
09:16So that was a huge bonus, wasn't it?
09:20I thought, I thought when those figures seem to be getting higher and higher, I thought
09:25Brighton might, you know, say, okay, we will, we will take, take the money for that one.
09:30But I think Matoma wasn't particularly keen on the move to Saudi, was he?
09:34I think he wants to play, he's still very ambitious and I read a report that he's keen
09:38for Champions League football at some stage as well.
09:42So I think that's his, that's his ultimate goal, but I agree that was a huge plus for
09:46Brighton keeping, keeping Matoma.
09:49And Jacob Moda, he obviously went, didn't he, in the, in the window as well.
09:53So Jacob Moda bid farewell to him.
09:55Do you think that was the right move?
09:57I think so.
09:58I think he came at a time where there were so many options sort of in that midfield role
10:03and especially that attacking midfield role with the amount of wingers and centre attacking
10:07midfielders that Brighton have that even though he had a lot of quality about him, he had
10:12a lot of potential, there just wasn't the game time for him to sort of adjusting and
10:16get to speed because of the performance of other younger players or players of his age
10:22performing even better.
10:23And you can't really drop a player that's playing at the levels that got us into Europe
10:28and whatnot.
10:29So yeah, opportunities have been really limited for him.
10:32And I do feel for him because I think that when he was signed for Brighton, there was
10:36a lot of talk on the fact that he could be a really big player for the Albion and it's
10:41just not worked out.
10:42So you've got to wish him all the best because I mean, he's moving on now and he's got another
10:48opportunity to prove himself and hopefully he can do well.
10:52Yeah.
10:53But overall, Henry, you're a Brighton fan as well as a Brighton reporter as well.
10:57Are you happy with the window?
10:59Yeah, I think overall, in terms of what Brighton were going to do, I think most fans would
11:07have expected this to have happened, you know, not a very busy January transfer window.
11:13So in terms of the window itself, I mean, having a few players that will be sort of
11:18signing for us like a young centre-back and also a striker that's going to be coming in
11:22at the end of the season, I think that that's good.
11:25I think Brighton fans maybe would have wanted maybe one other big signing, maybe a Premier
11:31League quality signing that's fresh and ready to go, especially with some of the performances
11:39we've had this season where Brighton have not been able to keep hold of victories.
11:45They've been able to let Leeds slip very easily.
11:48And I think maybe that one big signing, maybe, you know, spending...
11:54I saw Ben Chilwell went to Crystal Palace.
11:59I thought that would have been a good signing for Brighton.
12:01They've got trouble down that left-hand side as well, haven't they?
12:04Definitely that would have been one of those transfers, which is not very Brighton, but
12:09it would have been a big plus, I think.
12:12Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:14Well, thanks for going through that, Henry.
12:15Appreciate your time and keep up to date with all the news that happens on the transfer
12:20deadline on the Sussex World website.
12:23Thanks very much.
