00:00Ahead of Super Bowl 59 on February 9th in New Orleans between the Philadelphia Eagles and
00:04Kansas City Chiefs, let's talk for a moment about sports gambling. More than $1.5 billion is
00:11expected to be bet on the Super Bowl this year, which would make it the highest betting day in
00:16American sports history. Last year, $150 billion was bet by Americans on sports, up 24% over 2023.
00:26Sports gambling is exploding in popularity. The advertising is everywhere. Commercials,
00:31celebrities, Kevin Hart, LeBron James, the Manning brothers have become gambling pitchmen,
00:36encouraging you to sign up for companies like DraftKings and FanDuel. Since 2018, when the
00:41Supreme Court cleared the way for legalized sports gambling, 38 states and Washington,
00:46D.C. have made sports betting legal. It's easier than ever to bet on sports on your phone,
00:52not only on the results of events, on things like who's going to score the next touchdown,
00:56how many rebounds will a certain player have, how fast is this next pitch going to be.
01:01Micro betting, prop betting, it's everywhere, and this is starting to come with consequences.
01:05Risks of addiction. Recent research has found that in states with legalized sports gambling,
01:10bankruptcy risk is increased, as is depletion of savings, and even intimate partner violence
01:16is more likely to happen in states with sports betting when the home team loses.
01:21Enter Richard Daynard. In a recent Time profile, I interviewed Daynard, a law professor at
01:26Northeastern University who crafted legal strategies to sue big tobacco in the 1980s and 90s. He's
01:33taking a similar strategy against sports betting, crafting a lawsuit against DraftKings, and helping
01:39write a congressional law that is now in the House that would greatly regulate the industry,
01:43and perhaps curtail addiction. Daynard's work is going to be worth watching in 2025. Here's
01:49a safe bet. Come Super Bowl Sunday, there's going to be plenty of money on the line.
