Lizze Broadway and Urzila Carlson talk with hosts from Audacy about the making of Netflix's 'Kinda Pregnant.'
Transcript
00:00Lizzie, actually, I'm going to direct this first question to you, if it's okay.
00:05Okay, you got it.
00:06Don't feel bad.
00:07Okay, here we go.
00:08I know we have questions coming for you.
00:11I have to ask, what is it like to stroke, hug, caress, and dance with Amy Schumer in
00:18that moment?
00:19Did you create that when it was happening?
00:21Was she like, do whatever you like?
00:23What's it like?
00:25So this was my idea going at first.
00:27It was not on my bingo 2024 card, but I was just thriving.
00:30No, I was so nervous, because I was like, I have this really great idea just to touch
00:34her all over, and I never met her yet.
00:37I'm like, how do I come to Amy Schumer and be like, hi, hello, we haven't met.
00:41Can I touch you all over?
00:44And she's like, go for it, girl.
00:45And so I was just like, I love you every day, and it was just probably one of the best experiences
00:50of my life.
00:51Because I know you're relatively new to the industry, if you will.
00:55You're a young person.
00:56I'm a gen V, by the way.
00:57Thank you so much for watching.
01:00But I was just thinking in my head as I was watching that scene, I'm like, to be a young
01:06person to this shining star of Amy Schumer, and be like, hi, how are you?
01:11I'm just like, hello, Amy.
01:14I was like, oh my god, the balls.
01:16So good for you for taking that and making that work.
01:19No, honestly, I think that's why I just did it with my character, because I just wanted
01:22to touch Amy Schumer all day.
01:23And yeah, that's the vibe.
01:27Is she soft?
01:28Does she smell good?
01:29She smells amazing.
01:30I would go up to her, I'm like, okay, I'm relaxed.
01:33I'm good.
01:34I'm just good.
01:35I'm good.
01:36And she would just be like, that's what's so great about this movie and Amy, she's just
01:39so collaborative.
01:40She would bring my hand.
01:41She's like, touch me everywhere.
01:42I love you so much.
01:43And that's the chemistry we have on this show.
01:45That's great.
01:46That brings me to my question.
01:47How much improv did you guys get to add to your characters?
01:52You were, oh my god, you vaping everywhere?
01:56And you're just so quick with the one liners.
01:59And did you get to add your own things?
02:02Oh, yeah, absolutely.
02:03I watched the movie.
02:04I think there's two lines that was from the script.
02:07Because every time we do anything, then either Amy or Tyler would go, irsh, go nuts.
02:12And then I would just say whatever, because I didn't add to the story arc or anything.
02:17I was just kind of the loose cannon walking around in the movie, which is great.
02:22And so I would just say or do whatever.
02:25And then a lot of the stuff is just either me riffing with Amy or with whoever's in the scene.
02:32It was amazing.
02:33I just want to quote her every day.
02:35What's the line every day?
02:37I show up at the house.
02:38I show up at the mother's house.
02:41I was like, this is a gift that I want to send to all my friends.
02:45You're so memeable in the movie.
02:47It's so good.
02:48That's great.
02:49Fantastic.
02:50It's really funny, because you guys are the characters that are always funny.
02:54The other ones have their moments and their arcs.
02:57But in a comedy, you're still the comedic relief, which is so crazy.
03:01So I wanted to know for you guys, what's the laugh out loud moment that when you were either re-watching the movie or reading the script,
03:08that made you realize, oh, this is going to be a funny thing?
03:12I mean, the whole movie is just a belly laugh.
03:15I wouldn't say there's one thing.
03:18Your favorite.
03:19When he fell into the pool was my favorite.
03:22But that was one of the best days on, I mean, not for you.
03:25No, no, I mean, even that was really funny.
03:28So we had stunts, because she falls into a pool.
03:32And we kept your, so we had to have a safe word.
03:35You had to have a safe word.
03:36And we just.
03:37OK, so my safe word is banana.
03:39So we kept hearing, but the line was pinata.
03:42So we kept hearing, banana, banana.
03:46And I was like, oh my god, she's dying.
03:48She's drowning, she's drowning.
03:49And then.
03:50And Jillian both were like, get out the water.
03:52And I was like, no, I'm good.
03:54And then I'd say the line again, and they'd go, get out the water.
03:58And then all the divers just dive in.
04:00And then you just pop up, and you're like, I said pinata.
04:03Like, what's, is everything OK?
04:05But of course, my accent, banana and pinata sound very similar.
04:09So every time I'd say my line, then all the stunt divers would jump in.
04:14And I'm like, I'm good, guys, I'm good.
04:16OK.
04:17So that was one of the funniest.
04:19In the moment, I was terrified.
04:21But then after, I was like, you can't make this stuff up.
04:24This is obviously not going to be your last movie ever.
04:27We are going to be in so many more.
04:28I think we need to change your safe word.
04:30So right now, let's pick a new one together.
04:33What's your new safe word?
04:36Pineapple?
04:37Do you think that.
04:38My safe word in Gen V was pineapple.
04:41So we can do pineapple.
04:42Should I go different?
04:44Yeah, for the ear scene in season one, when I was dunked.
04:47I was like, they're like, pick a safe word.
04:49I'm like, pineapple.
04:50Because everyone leans on a fruit.
04:52When my co-host wants to talk about puking.
04:54I'm like, can we not?
04:55Pineapple.
04:56The word is pineapple now.
04:57Pineapple.
04:58So pineapple.
04:59I guess pineapple it is.
05:00Lock it in.
05:01Lock it in, yeah.
05:02OK, perfect.
05:03You two have two of the most bizarre and eccentric characters
05:06that I love so much in the movie.
05:08What do you each love the most about your character?
05:11Mine has zero filter.
05:13That is true.
05:14Zero.
05:15It's like my character's never even heard of filter.
05:18And it's just like, you know, it's that little voice inside your head
05:22that goes, I hope no one ever finds out I'm thinking this.
05:25That is my character.
05:27And I like that my character has no social boundaries.
05:30She will know.
05:31And it's just like taking a Xanax and playing someone like that.
05:34I'm like, I can just do whatever I want.
05:36I can take as much space up as I want.
05:38That's probably my favourite.
05:40But I also think your character is one of those
05:42that every circle of friends need you.
05:45You know, you need that sort of like, OK, we're going to have a thing,
05:48like a housewarming, but if we don't invite you,
05:51it's not going to be fun.
05:53Like we'll still get it done, but it won't be right.
05:56I want to be – but, like, we can't have it without Fallon either.
05:59Oh, no.
06:00Actually, you and I should just hang out.
06:02I think we should have our own – I think should we have our own,
06:05like, sequel?
06:07This movie's broken up.
06:09Woodwatch.
06:11Shirley and Fallon.
06:12Oh, my God.
06:13What a chaotic movie.
06:15Down the track.
06:16The kid is 10.
06:17You're divorced, nearly divorced, and then –
06:19Oh, yeah, I'm for sure divorced.
06:20You're for sure married at least two more times.
06:22And then we find each other.
06:25And we get married.
06:27Is this our confession?
06:33I did write you a Secret Santa.
06:37Confessing my love.
06:38I mean, I'm not saying that's why I'm divorced now.
06:40Oh.
06:42Marriage.
06:43I'm clearing my schedule.
06:44Ursula, this was your first movie ever?
06:47Yes.
06:48How the – did you make that happen?
06:50I mean, oh, my God.
06:51So how did the part come to you, A,
06:53and then what was it like filming your first movie?
06:57What is it like?
06:59I mean, this was a very fish out of water kind of experience, really.
07:03I actually got a message from Amy in my DMs on Instagram.
07:08Why?
07:09So when people go, I don't do social media.
07:11Do it.
07:12Well, it sucked in.
07:13You could have Oprah in there.
07:15You don't know.
07:16So Amy sent me a message and go – so she sent me my first message in 2020
07:20when my Netflix special came out on – well, obviously Netflix.
07:25And then she reposted some of it, and she goes, this chick is hilarious.
07:29And I was in quarantine in Sydney, and I sent her a message,
07:32hey, thanks for sharing my special.
07:34And she goes, you know, we have to support each other.
07:36Women have to have each other's backs.
07:38Yeah, and then so from then on, her and I, if I see her in anything,
07:42we would, you know, chat.
07:44And then she sent me a message going, hey, I have a script.
07:48Can you act?
07:49Because I think you'll be great in this.
07:51What a question.
07:52What are you going to say, no?
07:54Yeah.
07:55I was like –
07:56No, sorry, I pass.
07:57I was like, hey, I was straight for years.
07:59Like I'm the best actor there is.
08:01So I sent – she sent me her phone number, and I rang her.
08:07It's like 3 o'clock in the morning in New Zealand.
08:09I rang her up.
08:10She goes, send me your email and I'm going to send you the script.
08:12I read it.
08:13I go, this isn't acting.
08:14This is me.
08:15I feel like someone just copied me.
08:17And so the next morning she rings me.
08:20She goes, what do you think?
08:21I go, love it.
08:22She goes, do a self-tape.
08:23Then she came on, did the self-tape with me.
08:25Two days later I did the audition with her.
08:28And then, yeah, she sent me a text.
08:30She goes, you got it.
08:31If you can get the paperwork, you're in.
08:33And then like two weeks later I was on a plane on my way to New York.
08:37Congratulations because you killed it.
08:39Oh, thank you.
08:40It was wild.
08:41I'd never – I was so nervous.
08:42I brought my manager with me.
08:43I said, you have to come because I didn't know, you know, like I've never done anything.
08:47I didn't even know there was like catering.
08:49You know?
08:50Craft services, baby.
08:52No, I had no idea.
08:53They give you coffee?
08:54Yeah.
08:55I was like, what?
08:56How much is that?
08:57How much is that?
08:58Because as a stand-up comedian you just get crumbs in the back room.
09:01That's it.
09:02That's all.
09:03Yeah, I get it.
09:04You know, you sort of mop up the pee and try and get all the dirty stuff in the one corner
09:06and you sit in the other one, you know.
09:08So, yeah, it was amazing.
09:09It was such a great experience, though.
09:12But like I said, this movie ruined me because now if I don't get this kind of experience
09:17anywhere else, I'm going to like, where's this?
09:19Where are these people?
09:20I think they know your worth, babe.
09:21They know your worth.
09:22I hope you will because your performance was dead on and it was so funny and we can't wait
09:29to see it again.
09:30Oh, thank you.
09:31And Lizzie, what about you?
09:32How did you come across the script?
09:35Did you know Amy before?
09:37Oh, you did.
09:38I mean, yeah.
09:39I mean, Amy was like an icon, a legend, one of my favorite stand-up comedians.
09:45So I just got a regular audition and it was the first script.
09:50I haven't seen a female-led movie in so long.
09:53So I was like, okay, no one's ever going to see this audition.
09:56So I just kind of did something like a kindergarten art project and just did random things.
10:00And then I got a call and I did a callback and met with them two more times.
10:07And I just got a call saying, hey, we would love for you to be in the movie.
10:11And I just felt like I was being punked.
10:13So it was just kind of normal, but I was just, it was just like one of those moments where
10:18you're like, oh, my God, I can't believe I'm working with all these talented women.
10:21So, yeah, pretty incredible.
10:23Did you have a little bit of imposter syndrome?
10:25A hundred percent.
10:26Even now I'm like, how am I here?
10:28Hello?
10:29Or what's that meme that Daniel went to the dentist and he's like, is this real life?
10:35That's how it felt.
10:37But that's the beauty of all these women when I'm like, this is kind of my first big film
10:43that I was like, and they just guided me and supported me.
10:47I was like, again, like you said, if I don't have another experience like this, it's like
10:50everyone's dead to me.
10:51So it's like it's such a privilege.
10:54You're fantastic.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Funny as hell.
10:57Support of women.
10:58Oh, yeah.
10:59Yeah.
11:00I love it.
11:01That's really cool.
11:02I'm really glad that you guys had such a positive experience.
11:03There's a part in the movie that really, really made me laugh and I did not expect it.
11:08It's when you walked in and you were also faking being pregnant.
11:11Was that improv or did you just make your way?
11:15Yeah, no.
11:16So that was my very first day on set.
11:19I had never met anyone.
11:22As I walked in, I'd not met anyone because they were already in the room.
11:27So I walked in and they go, okay, that blue pillow, like from the back of the room,
11:33they go, you just go sit there.
11:34And Amy's like, you know, the double, the second team lady was sitting there.
11:39So they go, she'll leave, Amy will come in and then you walk in as soon as you hear these two words.
11:46I'm like, okay.
11:47So this is my first day.
11:48I've never, you know, like done anything.
11:50And then I just hear the words and I walk in and then I go sit down and then I have to fight with Amy.
11:58But I didn't even realize, like I thought it was going to be like a no, I don't like it.
12:02And she'll go, you like it or whatever.
12:04Like, you know, I wasn't even sure.
12:06And so she leans.
12:07There's a person between us and we start going at each other.
12:10And then the second take, they go, she just leans to me.
12:14Now, I've never spoken to her, I mean, in person.
12:17Like I've never, she just leans to me and she goes, it's great to meet you, doll.
12:20I go, great to meet you.
12:21She goes, you can pull my hair if you like.
12:24And I go, you can grab me by the tit if you like.
12:27She goes, all right, let's go.
12:29And then we both just sit up and then we start again and we're just grabbing at each other's boobs and hair.
12:36We just held afterwards.
12:38It was so funny.
12:40So, yeah, that was my very first, you know, and my first time with a fake belly, can I just say.
12:45It was good fun, actually.
12:47I enjoyed it.
12:48We'll do it again.
12:49I'm like crying.
12:50I could listen to you talk, tell stories all day.
12:52The accent.
12:54There are so many laugh out loud moments in this movie.
12:57When you guys saw it back, what is the one that you could pick that is your favorite scene in the movie?
13:03The alpaca.
13:08When I rewatched that, I was like, did she just say that?
13:11It's a male.
13:12Whatever you said, I just kept wanting to.
13:15Milk Bessie.
13:16She goes, I don't think Bessie is a girl.
13:20That die with alpaca was crazy.
13:22The fact that we had an alpaca on set, I'm like, okay, this is going to be a hit.
13:26If there's an alpaca, you know it's going to be a good day.
13:29But also because alpacas are quite sensitive to noise.
13:32You can't be too rowdy.
13:34And there's a big group of extras.
13:37And also the sound that alpacas don't like is shh.
13:41So, of course, what do they do on set to keep everyone quiet?
13:44So I've got the alpaca, and I had to have training with the alpaca outside with a handler.
13:51And they go, okay, just don't be loud.
13:54And they're like soft, deep voice, like if you talk like that.
13:58And the whole time, I'm in the alpaca's ear going, you're all right, babe.
14:03Like I'm on this weird OnlyFans trip with this alpaca going, you're all right, I love your ears.
14:10And then some production person would go, shh.
14:13And then the alpaca would jump up.
14:15And you're the alpaca whisperer.
14:17Yeah, that's exactly right.
14:19You were the alpaca whisperer.
14:20Yeah, she loved me.
14:21I think you could charge a lot of money for that on movie sets, quite frankly.
14:24Yeah, actually.
14:25And mine was Yoko.
14:27Weren't there two?
14:28Because they need emotional support.
14:29Yeah, there was three of them.
14:30There was three of them?
14:31Yeah, yeah.
14:32It was John, Yoko, and Paul.
14:34I'm not saying someone was inspired by anyone, but the Beatles.
14:39Yeah.
14:40I was crazy.
14:41Yums.
14:42The Beatles.
14:43We've never heard of them before.
14:44Yeah, yeah.
14:45That's right.
14:46That's right.
14:47I better point out.
14:48It's these old guys that would sing.
14:51I feel like there are so many lines in the movie that, again, I don't know that I'll
14:57be able to use any of this on my radio program.
14:59However, I felt like they were great band names.
15:02So I'd like to read you a few, and you tell me which would be your band name.
15:04All right.
15:05These are all lines from the movie.
15:06Okay.
15:07You smell like cocaine.
15:10Romeo wants pussy from Olive Verona.
15:13Was that an actual line?
15:14Was that an actual line?
15:15It was an actual line.
15:16Oh, my God.
15:17A kid says it in her classroom.
15:19Oh, yes.
15:20They're talking about Romeo and Juliet, and she goes, what really does it mean?
15:23Romeo wants pussy from Olive Verona.
15:26These are all solid so far.
15:28Tampon Landfill Monster.
15:29That's a good one.
15:32Exhale through your butthole.
15:34A toddler stabbed you.
15:36Kiss a lot of turds.
15:37Oh, yeah.
15:38I smell like cocaine is a good one.
15:39Yeah, that's the one I said to the kid as he walked through the hall.
15:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:44Pro-choice like Rolls Royce.
15:46I think that could be a band name.
15:47Yeah, that was great.
15:48You've got the t-shirts.
15:49Amy made us t-shirts.
15:51I have it with me.
15:53And she's like, surprise.
15:54And it says pro-choice like a Rolls Royce.
15:56And I was like, we peaked.
15:58It's fine.
15:59And there we are.
16:00Yeah, here we are.
16:01This was your first movie, and this was your first time working with Amy.
16:04Obviously, you're around so many comedians.
16:06Everyone's so funny.
16:07What's the vibe like?
16:09What did your everyday look like when you hit set?
16:12Because I can imagine that you would just be cracking up the entire time.
16:16I'm so much funnier when I'm around my funny friends.
16:18It was like watching a stand-up for 10 hours a day.
16:21I was like, where's my popcorn?
16:23Most of the people in the movie is from Saturday Night Live or from some improv.
16:28SNL, Alex Moffat.
16:30Yeah, it was amazing.
16:32So we hardly ever spent time in our trailers.
16:36As soon as we had lunch, we all had lunch in the green room.
16:39We'd be sitting here, and then we'd play this game, Consider the Source.
16:43Consider the Source, yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:45And we'd just play that, or we would just go around in a circle
16:49and try and crack each other up.
16:51It was just amazing.
16:53That's why I feel like this movie is so good,
16:55because you can sense the real chemistry between all of us,
16:58and it was just so real.
17:00I mean, it nearly bankrupted me, because we went on so many lunches and dinners.
17:06I mean, I say that.
17:07Amy paid, but still.
17:09It would have if she didn't.
17:11That's Amy for you.
17:13That's the leader on the set.
