More than a third of adults feel there aren’t enough community spaces in their local area.
A poll of 2,000 people found 22 per cent have noticed a decline in shared areas such as halls and centres in the past decade.
But 81 per cent believe community centres are vital for improving connections with others.
While 78 per cent think they contribute to a sense of wellbeing, and 72 per cent believe they are key for their overall physical health.
The research, commissioned by Crown Paints, follows a Freedom of Information request which found government funding for public social spaces has dropped by a fifth in the past two years.
The data from 96 local authorities found spending on community-related services and provisions has fallen by 18 per cent between 2022 and 2024.

00:00You ready?
00:04Research has shown there's been a massive decline in community spaces and lots of locations
00:08have been suffering in the last few years.
00:10I've been working with GroundPaint and a load of local volunteers to bring Brockmore back
00:15to life, but this is just one space, there are thousands more that need saving.
00:25Spaces like this, if they decline and they get left to disrepair and close, there isn't
00:30spaces in the community for people to gather together.
00:33It means a lot to me and I'd be heartbroken if it did shut.
00:36You see kids just wandering the streets, getting in trouble, and in my opinion I think it's
00:42because they don't have that space.
00:49Design is all about storytelling and at its heart is the people, that's who we're designing
00:54for and it's been so rewarding seeing the space come together and hopefully writing
01:00the next chapter for Brockmore.
01:02It was dingy and it was dark, but now it's bright and it's vibrant.
01:16We need this, we need that togetherness, if we don't have togetherness then we all drift
01:20apart and we all just drown.
01:24This is a movement, not a one-time thing, we really need your help, sign the petition
01:28and let's bring spaces like this back to life.
