00:00Live from Media Row, Super Bowl 59,
00:02Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:05I got a kicker here today I need to talk to.
00:07Look at it, look at the background, beautiful.
00:09It's Cameron Dickerts at charge.
00:10I mean, how do you feel right there?
00:12How do you feel?
00:1357 yarder right there, right?
00:1457 yarder, yep, that's the, I mean it feels good
00:17when you make those, yeah.
00:18Absolutely, now let's get to it.
00:19Let's have some fun because NFL kickers I love.
00:22I had Blake Grupio on just a couple days ago,
00:23New Orleans Saints kicker.
00:24I always like to get in the mind of a kicker
00:26because you are out there alone.
00:29What is the process?
00:30Like, I'm 37 yarder, 47 yarder, any of them.
00:33Like, what's the process?
00:33Yeah, it's all the same.
00:34You know, I run on the field,
00:36kind of approach it from behind, run out there, run up,
00:39and then take your same steps you do every time.
00:42Get your spot, take your steps,
00:44and when you give the nod, it's go time.
00:46You kind of have the same breath, kind of,
00:47and then nod, and then we'll go
00:49in whatever cadence we're going.
00:50It's just time to rock and roll.
00:51It's unbelievable.
00:52Now, also, do you have a kicking coach with the Chargers?
00:56So, our assistant special teams coordinator,
00:59Chris Gold, we call him Beep,
01:01he is like a wizard.
01:03He does all of that for us,
01:05and so that's his primary role is like with specialists,
01:08but then as well, he's been an awesome guy
01:11for everybody in our special teams units overall,
01:14so he's like, he's been such a big help in my kicking game
01:17and just helping kind of correct things
01:19throughout the season when things come up.
01:20Now, how do you handle this too?
01:21Because, like, being a kicker in the NFL,
01:23you're a great athlete already,
01:25but some people say, like,
01:26oh, it's just a kicking position.
01:27We don't need them until we need them.
01:29Like, being in the locker room and that pressure on you
01:32because the gains come down to you in every aspect.
01:36How do you handle that?
01:37I think it's exciting.
01:38I mean, it's the reason why you get into this, right?
01:40I think the guys who typically do really well
01:42and have long careers are guys who are,
01:44view it kind of the same way, where they're pumped.
01:47I mean, there's a reason why I'm a kicker.
01:49I want to do this.
01:50This stuff I live for, so it's game-winning field goals.
01:52It's like, the pressure's off me.
01:53I'm there to enjoy and just, like, go do my best.
01:56And I always like to ask this too,
01:57because you've been around the NFL.
01:59You kick in a dome, which you probably have to love.
02:01Are there places that you've been around the NFL
02:03that you say, boy, I can't get a gauge on this place?
02:08Not crazy.
02:10I haven't had anywhere where it's, like, really surprised me.
02:13Our practice facility is honestly, like, the worst.
02:16It's like, I hate kicking there, and they know it.
02:20Like, I'm very open about it with everybody.
02:24We're right by the ocean, and the wind just howls
02:27in the same direction the entire time.
02:28So I always have a right-to-left wind kick going one way.
02:32So I kick Wednesdays and Thursdays.
02:34So Wednesday, I kick one direction, right-to-left wind.
02:37Thursdays, I kick left-to-right wind.
02:39And I'm just like, this is crazy.
02:41Then you get to game day, and you're like,
02:42oh, I can actually aim straight, so it's wild.
02:45Now, let me ask you this question too,
02:46because I always love the background, too.
02:48We know you went to Texas.
02:50We know you're in the NFL now.
02:51What happened in high school?
02:52Were you always a kicker?
02:53Did you play soccer?
02:54Was it football?
02:55Soccer's been my primary sport growing up, right?
02:57So I've only played soccer pretty much forever,
02:59then moved to the United States in 2011.
03:01Where were you before that?
03:02Shanghai, China.
03:03Wow, what?
03:04For 11 years.
03:05Family, supply chain management.
03:06My mom started her travel business out there.
03:08And you speak English.
03:09Used to be fluent.
03:10I've lost a bunch of it.
03:11So, like, it used to be like, it was almost,
03:14it was like my first language,
03:15and now it's just gone pretty much.
03:17Okay.
03:18But I still lie about it on resumes.
03:20I mean, of course, I'm playing it.
03:20Why wouldn't you?
03:21Yeah, of course I do it.
03:22Kicker that can talk all those languages.
03:24And speak Chinese.
03:25It's unreal.
03:26I mean, that's an extra book.
03:27Want me to be your agent?
03:28Exactly.
03:28We'll go ahead and get a contract and do that.
03:29Yup, amen.
03:31But then, just kind of growing up doing that,
03:33and then football, everybody plays football in Texas.
03:36So I was like, I'll play.
03:37I was an O-lineman.
03:38I was like, this sport sucks.
03:40I'm not an O-lineman.
03:41So then went to kicking, and I was like,
03:43hey, coach, I'm just gonna kick.
03:45This is it.
03:46And then kicked throughout high school
03:47and played soccer the whole way through.
03:48Yeah, being in Los Angeles, obviously a great city there.
03:51Harbaugh's your head coach.
03:52Give me a little bit of the background
03:53in the building there with Harbaugh,
03:54because we know he's quirky,
03:55but we know he gets the most out of his players.
03:57Oh, yeah.
03:58I mean, he, the best way I explain it
04:00is he is your friend's weird dad
04:03who's so loving and awesome
04:05that everybody loves to be around.
04:07And it brings that energy
04:08of just connecting everybody together
04:10and having so much fun.
04:12And so it's the most fun I've ever had
04:13playing football this year.
04:15And they brought in a great group of guys
04:17to make the group fun and enjoyable.
04:21The way he loves on you and loves like Jesus loves
04:24is just such a huge thing
04:25that makes you want to play for him
04:27and go play for everybody else.
04:27And that trust and accountability is so big.
04:29Now, also being a kicker,
04:30you tend to move around at times.
04:32And I did see there 2022 with the Philadelphia Eagles
04:35who are in the Super Bowl this year.
04:37What was your time like in Philadelphia?
04:38I loved it.
04:39I mean, the guys were awesome.
04:41Being in Texas, everybody hates the Eagles
04:43because the Cowboys.
04:44It's true.
04:45I gotta say, I'm the opposite now.
04:47I am just big Eagles guy.
04:48I think they're an incredible organization
04:50and that their coaches have been awesome for me.
04:53And so it was really cool when I left them
04:55and I went to the Chargers
04:56and had the game-winning field goal,
04:57like Nick Sirianni texted me.
04:59And he texted me and was like,
05:00hey, congrats on the kick.
05:01Like, it's really awesome to see you doing well.
05:02That's great.
05:03So like, forget that from a head coach.
05:04It's like, it's a pretty cool
05:05and it shows what the organization's like.
05:07So rooting interest in the Super Bowl.
05:09Can we edge you towards the Eagles?
05:10I'm an Eagles fan.
05:11You don't even need to edge me.
05:12I'm a hundred percent towards the Eagles.
05:14So there's no bone in me that wants to see the Chiefs win.
05:16I'm over that.
05:17That's awful.
05:19If I ask you this question,
05:20Cameron Dicker's lining up in the Super Bowl, 27-27.
05:24Would you prefer the 28-yarder
05:26or do you want the 48-yarder?
05:28I mean, the 48-yarder is more fun for sure.
05:31I mean, you want to have those fun ones.
05:33It's always great when you have short kicks, right?
05:35Like it's, you're like, ah, thanks.
05:37And then you're kind of like
05:38the offense stalled out down there.
05:39And you're like, I'll take these.
05:41But the big kicks are always fun
05:43and it's always more memorable.
05:44Let me ask you a question too,
05:45because I always wonder this.
05:47The look to the sideline.
05:48Do you tell the coach what I'm good from from today?
05:51How does that actually go about?
05:52So pre-game we'll kind of go over there
05:54after we do all of our kicking
05:55and usually you talk to your special teams coach
05:57and you say, hey, we're going here.
05:59So I'll usually tell them, okay, I feel comfortable here.
06:04If you want to go end to half, end of game scenario,
06:06we'll extend it an extra five yards typically, maybe more.
06:09And then it's like, you throw your body under it
06:12and you can make it if everything goes well.
06:14But that's more of like, I know if I don't make it
06:17from here, that's a hundred percent on me.
06:18Now, does icing the kicker work?
06:20Does it work?
06:21I don't think so.
06:22I mean, I've had, I don't know if it's ever worked.
06:26Has it ever worked on you?
06:27I don't know.
06:28I don't know.
06:28Probably not then,
06:29because you probably would have remembered it
06:30right off the bat.
06:31I mean, we kind of iced myself this year.
06:34So like it worked when we did it to me.
06:36I missed the kick because it was like a super weird scenario
06:39against the Raiders.
06:40I was literally sitting on the bench,
06:42just vibing last game of the year.
06:44We punted the ball.
06:45There was a flag on the punt
06:48and they took the 15 yard penalty
06:50for us where he punted it from.
06:52So all of a sudden we're in field goal range.
06:54And so I'm sitting on the bench
06:55and our coach is yelling field goal, field goal.
06:57And I just ran from the bench onto the field.
06:59And I was like, what is happening?
07:00Three, two, one, we're live at that point.
07:02Who decided this was a good idea?
07:04And it was like a 55 yard field goal.
07:06And I was like, what are we doing?
07:07And so ran out there and missed the kick.
07:09And I was just like, I don't even care.
07:10Like that was just wild.
07:11Forget about it and let it rip there.
07:12It's great talking to you too,
07:13because we are in New Orleans.
07:15Any promotions that you have
07:16or social media you want to give out there?
07:18No, just stick with the kicker on social media.
07:20Just trying to hopefully start a foundation here soon.
07:23So working to-
07:25The best, the best, you know.
07:27Nickname.
07:27I know, it worked out for me.
07:29Yeah, so it worked out.
07:31It's been incredible and it's always fun to play with.
07:33That's Cameron Dicker down the right side here
07:35on the floor, media row at the Superbowl.
07:37Cameron Dicker.
07:38Hey man, more kicks straight down the arrow for you.
07:40Let's go.
07:41There you go.
07:41Thanks guys.
