00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 hack and slash games that should
00:10really get way more love than they actually do.
00:14Consider this meager reward a donation to your cause.
00:17Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:22Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:27Dante's Inferno
00:33Poor Dante and developer Visceral Games never got the respect they deserved for this one.
00:38Upon release, Dante's Inferno was wildly dismissed by critics and players as being
00:43nothing more than a God of War clone.
00:45Look, we won't lie, there are definitely a lot of similarities between Dante and Kratos'
00:51respected outings.
00:52However, this is one of those few clone games that is still a ton of fun to play.
00:57Dante's own arsenal put a lot of focus on brutality than agility, and many of the environments
01:02are gruesomely astounding in their design.
01:05We're glad EA and Microsoft were able to make the game backwards compatible with Xbox
01:09Series XS, but when are we getting a proper port with faster and smoother performance?
01:14That's the big question.
01:23Deadpool
01:33If you have ever wanted a superhero game with a comedic, bloodier edge, then we cannot stress
01:39how absurdly hilarious and violent Deadpool is.
01:42This is a game that encourages exploiting combos just so you can build up momentum and
01:47unleash even more vicious attacks.
01:49In addition to katanas and pistols, you'll also be able to use psi, hammers, SMGs, shotguns,
01:55and even plasma rifles.
01:58Off Mr. Sinister's cronies however you see fit, all while enjoying the merc with the
02:02mouth's colorful commentary.
02:04Just try not to get too reckless, death is still possible even when you have a sick healing
02:09factor.
02:10Castlevania
02:16Lords of Shadow
02:24When talking about Castlevania, almost everyone immediately gravitates towards Symphony of
02:28the Night, Aria of Sorrow, or Order of Ecclesia.
02:32All great games, yes, but where's the love for Lords of Shadow?
02:37This game was a unique take on the IP as it tried to blend then-modern action game
02:41traditions with the world and aesthetics of Castlevania.
02:45On top of that, it included some incredibly fun puzzles, and enough enemy variety to challenge
02:50our skills with the Combat Cross, and holy hell, the Combat Cross feels so good to use.
02:57Just one or two combat encounters with it, and you won't want Lords of Shadow to end.
03:07Strider
03:08Hiryu Strider has been around since 1989, yet his 2014 reboot remains to be his best
03:18outing ever.
03:19Even though you don't get as many moves as other hack and slash games might give you,
03:23Strider still lets you go nuts with Strider's blades while keeping things tough, as one
03:28would expect from an action platformer born in the 80s.
03:31Plus, the enemy variety will keep you on your toes as you zip around areas trying to avoid
03:36their fire.
03:37That said, this is a game perfect for those wanting a hack and slash with a more retro
03:42feel to it.
03:43We only hope Capcom revisits this sometime soon with a brand new entry.
03:52Marlowe Briggs and the Mask of Death
03:54It's funny how Dante's Inferno got so much heat for supposedly being a God of War
04:04knockoff, yet Marlowe Briggs wasn't?
04:08Yeah, think of this game as God of War, but if it followed the tropes of cheesy action
04:13flicks.
04:14Admittedly, the game is not as fine-tuned as The Ghost of Sparta's Adventures, but
04:19just look at the insane abilities Marlowe Briggs has access to.
04:23Of course the framerate is going to tank while he's flailing his chains and causing explosions
04:28all over the place.
04:29Honestly, if you have a PC or an Xbox Series XS, you should absolutely pick this game up.
04:35It's hilarious, it's fun, and it did not get enough love when it launched.
04:44Heavenly Sword
04:53If you're one of the folks who might be frustrated with Ninja Theory's output in
04:56recent years, we have a strong feeling you might be an OG fan of Heavenly Sword.
05:02This was the game that almost instantly made a name for Ninja Theory back in the day, as
05:06this was only their second game ever made, and what a damn fine game Heavenly Sword turned
05:12out to be.
05:13The controls helped reinforce players to play more patiently than other hack and slash games
05:18at the time by allowing you to defend only if you weren't pushing any buttons or moving.
05:23It was a great way to let players assess their situation quickly and effectively while also
05:28discouraging them from mindless mashing.
05:31Additionally, the 4-5 hour runtime was just the right length for this experience.
05:41Dust An Elysian Tale
05:48Once upon a time, Dust An Elysian Tale was one of the most revered games on the market.
05:53Towards the tail end of the Xbox 360 days, it felt like Dust was leading the charge for
05:57indie game development.
05:59Unfortunately, the game seems to have left people's minds these days, as it rarely
06:04ever gets talked about.
06:06Not only did the combat excel in maintaining a fast pace and giving the player various
06:10moves to execute, it looked exceptionally great throughout the entire game.
06:16While you can still buy and play the game on PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox Series XS, developer
06:22Humble Hearts is sadly no more.
06:33Lollipop Chainsaw
06:41If there was any way to perfectly describe Lollipop Chainsaw, it's pure, unadulterated,
06:47dumb fun.
06:48While its attitude and visuals really lean into Suda51 and James Gunn's absurd sense
06:53of humor, Lollipop Chainsaw does offer more with its different types of attacks and combos.
06:59You can't just spam the chainsaw or low attacks, you do have to mix things up as enemies
07:04will start reading your inputs.
07:06If this adventure of rainbows, sparkles, and zombie heads sounds like your cup of tea,
07:11then please, go and buy the remaster, it's great.
07:20Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning
07:26What is there to not love about this game?
07:29We could go on about the music and the art direction, but the combat is where Kingdoms
07:33of Amalur can get addicting.
07:35While you can go for a magic primary build, building your character around might will
07:39give you a plethora of vicious attacks to utilize between your swords, daggers, hammers,
07:45or whatever else you prefer to use.
07:47Once you gain access to fate abilities, it's all over for whoever crosses your path.
07:51It's a crime that this game didn't become something greater.
07:55At least we got the remaster.
08:05Champions of Norrath Realms of Everquest
08:14Of the early pioneers of hack and slash gameplay, the only one that is missing out on gaining
08:19a new audience is Champions of Norrath.
08:22This was one of the best games to grace the PS2 as it gave us the scope of a traditional
08:27RPG while giving us a great amount of combat scenarios to truly test our builds.
08:32It was everything you could ask for in a game with the right amount of difficulty, an incredible
08:37number of quests to take on, and dungeons to explore, and boss fights that felt epic
08:42every single time, even upon replay.
08:46Sadly, Champions of Norrath has been forever stranded on PlayStation 2 and we've been
08:51begging Sony for years, almost 20 years now, no it has been 20 years, we've been begging
08:58for Sony to bring this to PS5 in some form.
09:08But tell us, what's your favorite hack and slash game?
09:11Did it make our list?
09:12Let us know down in the comments and be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays for more great
09:16videos every day.
