Transcript
00:00It's Friday afternoon in Fujairah, when pick-up loaded with Guantan Brahmin bills make their
00:23way to an open iron fence dirt area with two large gates on opposite sides.
00:29The ferocious but beautiful animals with floppy ears and large humps are here with
00:34their owners to take part in the weekly bullfighting competition.
00:40The owners unload their prized bulls and secure them on one of the numerous posts outside
00:45the enclosed area.
00:47The beasts dig their hooves into the ground and are raring to go.
00:52Spectators from all over the emirate gather to watch the bulls lock horns.
00:57Many of them are families who pose for photographs with their children standing next to the hooved
01:03gladiators.
01:04There are also those who prefer to watch the competition in the safety of their four-wheel
01:10drives, but bull owners take their seats inside the fighting ring.
01:16A commentator in his own style calls out the names of all the hooved contenders that adds
01:23to the charged atmosphere.
01:34Unlike the Spanish bullfighting, this particular event is bloodless, with no matadors, referees,
01:40trophies or a scoreboard.
01:43It's all a matter of prestige and honour for the bull owners.
01:48The game is supervised by Ali Abdullah, an elderly gentleman who is well-versed with
01:54the rules of the game.
01:58Some of these people own two to six bulls.
02:02The winners don't receive anything.
02:04The competition is held purely for entertainment.
02:06We don't gain anything out of this.
02:10It's a passion for us.
02:11Everyone cooperates and helps each other.
02:13There is no loser.
02:16We make sure not to let a big bull fight against a small bull.
02:20It has to be an even fight.
02:23The bulls lock their horns and the fight begins.
02:27The bull that successfully butts the other for at least two to three minutes is declared
02:32the winner.
02:33There are instances when an angry bull will charge into those sitting inside the fighting
02:39and ring, injuring spectators.
02:47The competition is a weekly affair and is only cancelled if there is a death in the
02:52emirate.
