00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Wednesday, April the 2nd. Here are the
00:08top stories at this hour.
00:11A major earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck off the coast of Chile, leading to five deaths
00:16and triggering a tsunami that pounded the country's northern coast with two-meter-tall
00:20waves.
00:21Officials said the dead included people who were crushed by collapsing walls or were killed
00:25by heart attacks. The US Geological Survey said the quake was shallow at 20.1 kilometers
00:31below the seabed and struck near the Peruvian border.
00:34The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised UAE citizens not to travel to Thailand unless
00:39they really have to due to the tense political situation there. The ministry, in coordination
00:44with the UAE embassy there, has assigned an operations room that works around the clock
00:48to follow citizens' conditions in the country.
00:51UK Prime Minister David Cameron has commissioned a review of the Muslim Brotherhood's UK activity,
00:57according to No.10. Recent press reports have suggested members have moved to London to
01:01escape a crackdown in Cairo, where the group backs ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
01:07US Secretary of State John Kerry has insisted it is completely premature to write off the
01:12Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Hours earlier, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
01:17said he would seek further UN recognition unless a prisoner released by Israel went
01:22ahead. Officials involved in the peace talks said an agreement was near on extending the
01:26negotiations through 2015 in exchange for the release of Jonathan J. Pollard, an American
01:33serving a life sentence for spying for Israel.
01:36Football and underperforming Manchester United produced a vastly improved display to hold
01:40defending champions Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw in the home leg of their Champions League
01:45quarter-final last night. Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino believes his side did everything
01:50in their power to break down a dogged Atletico Madrid as they were held 1-1 at the Nou Camp
01:55in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
01:58And finally, the weather. The daytime temperature will be 37 degrees Celsius, falling to 20
02:03tonight.
02:04That's all for now. Thanks for watching and as always you can get the latest news at gulfnews.com.
