00:00Good day and welcome to the GULF NEWS UPDATE for Sunday, November the 29th.
00:09Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:13Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law sweeping economic sanctions against
00:18Turkey.
00:19The move came as relations between the two countries plummeted after Turkey shot down
00:24a Russian warplane over the Syrian border last week.
00:28He said it shot down the Russian Su-24 bomber, part of a deployment of Russian air power
00:35striking targets in Syria because the plane briefly crossed into Turkish airspace, a charge
00:41strongly denied by Russia.
00:44More than 200 residents of Dubai's Al Shamsi building, which was gutted by a massive fire
00:50last week, have been resettled by the combined assistance of the building's owner, a volunteer
00:56organization, and the Philippines Consulate General in Dubai.
00:59The fire ravaged at least half of the 48 apartments in the three blocks of the building, located
01:05on Salah Al-Din Street in Deira, leaving around 400 residents homeless.
01:11Tens of thousands of people marched across Australia today on the third day of worldwide
01:16rallies as pressure mounts on global leaders to strike a pact on cutting greenhouse gases
01:22at crucial talks in Paris.
01:26Some 150 leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama, China's Xi Jinping, India's
01:31Narendra Modi and Russia's Vladimir Putin, will attend the start of the U.N. conference
01:36on Monday, tasked with reaching the first truly universal climate pact.
01:42The goal is to limit average global warming to 2 degrees Celsius.
01:48In sport, Britain's Tyson Fury was crowned the new world heavyweight champion after a
01:53unanimous points win over Vladimir Klitschko, who suffered his first defeat in 11 years.
02:00The 27-year-old Fury was awarded the fight in Dusseldorf by the judges to take Klitschko's
02:06WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO belts.
02:11In football, Jamie Vardy wrote a new chapter in his rise from the wilderness of non-league
02:16football to playing for England, when he became the first player to score in 11 consecutive
02:22Premier League matches last night.
02:24The Leicester City striker's goal against Manchester United eclipsed the record set
02:29in 2003 by United's former Dutch striker Ruud van Nisselrooy.
02:35Bollywood director Rajkumar Hirani has defended Aamir Khan, calling the backlash against the
02:40actor intolerant.
02:43The multiple award-winning director said,
02:45I feel we need to pick up on positive things and talk about those things.
02:50We all need to be careful.
02:52Khan was recently attacked for voicing his concerns about growing intolerance in India
02:57and for saying that his wife once asked if they should leave the country, fearing for
03:02their son's safety.
03:04And finally, the weather.
