00:00As a pickleball player, Lito Quinez decided to start his own pickleball equipment business
00:09because he wants to have locally made or Pinoy made equipment for his beloved sports.
00:17Let's find out his business story here in Negosya Tayo.
00:21One of the most popular hobby or sports here in the Philippines is to play pickleball.
00:33Because of that, we will meet a pickleball equipment business today
00:37to find out their secret in a successful business.
00:41So sir, you're a member of Professional Pickleball Association.
00:49So can you tell us more about this?
00:51There are two groups. I came to another group, PPA, Professional Pickleball Association.
00:57And the other group is PPF, Philippine Pickleball Federation.
01:01I started with this group, PPA.
01:03And then, way back in 2018-2019, before the pandemic, we started promoting pickleball.
01:10Then there was a shutdown during the pandemic.
01:13You know, even though there was a shutdown, it grew.
01:16Because it's indoor.
01:17Then when it opened in 2022, that's when it started.
01:20That's when we grew. And now, the number of pickleballs in the Philippines is huge.
01:24Can you share with us, if you're going to go back in time, while you were building this business,
01:29how did you build this on your own?
01:33The idea is that the equipment is expensive.
01:37The equipment of pickleball is expensive, coming from abroad.
01:41So here, we saw that it's not just the opportunity, but the needs.
01:47The need for this sport to be affordable and accessible to everyone.
01:54Can you tell us more about your struggles, the challenges along the way, sir Lito?
01:59Our struggle is what we call branding.
02:03Because we have countrymen who are more interested in foreign brands.
02:07The second is the requirements of the USPA.
02:11Because we have certifications of equipment, ma'am Diane.
02:15This certification is sometimes required in tournaments.
02:19And now, we are very fortunate.
02:22It's not just us, it's our countrymen.
02:25We have 2 to 5 certified paddlers.
02:30In the Philippines, this is a local brand, Filipino brand.
02:33And can compete not only locally, but also internationally.
02:37It's very proud, right? Because we can already compete internationally and put up on your own.
02:43So sir, do you have any tips or advice to those aspiring entrepreneurs?
02:47You know, who want to be like you, or they want also to enter the pickleball business industry.
02:52Not only pickleball, but other sports equipment as well.
02:56What we need now is to promote local brands.
02:59We will develop local branding, local signature brands.
03:05So that we won't be tied to premium and important brands.
03:10We don't have control on pricing, we don't have control even on designs.
03:15So let us design our own.
03:17I know that I believe in the creativity of Filipinos and our local brands.
03:23So, go local!
03:30Buy local, support local.
03:32Let's support the Filipino-made products.
