The government has announced it will invest £350 million in changes to affordable housing. Up to 2,800 extra homes will be built through a £300 million boost to the Affordable Homes Programme, with half of the homes for social rent, and more than 250 additional council homes through a £50 million boost to the Local Authority Housing Fund to provide homes for those in need of better-quality temporary accommodation, the government said. 00:00We think we're really excited about what we're putting out today.
00:03It's part of our plan for change. It's to build a million and a half homes in this country.
00:07There's no one lever you can pull to do that. It involves all these steps coming together.
00:12The money today comes off the back of £500 million made available at the previous budget for affordable housing.
00:18And it's money where local authorities and social housing providers have come forward saying they can spend it and get houses built and built quickly.
00:24This is great, and this is a chance to really start to reduce some of those families living in temporary accommodation.
00:30So it's not the whole piece, but it's an important step forward.
00:33Looking at about 2,800 homes through this, the bulk will be through social rent, so it will be homes that families can access.
00:39And yes, it will make a difference.
00:41As I say, last night 160,000 children were in temporary accommodation, 6,000 in bed and breakfast.
00:47For those families, getting them into permanent houses for their future, that will make a huge difference.
00:52As I say, there's no one lever to pull, but this is an important step in the right direction.
