00:00We are all talking about why Mumbai has gone wrong and we are talking about Rohit Sharma, Aishanthi Shrinath scoring.
00:06But the fact of the matter is that when you invest on a player who is unavailable, so either you have thought that let this year, this year we are going to take this as a chance.
00:16Hello, good evening. Here's a very warm welcome to you for our show of Straight Back with Mr Cricket UAE.
00:32We have got quite a few members today for the discussion on what was, you know, quite an eventful day of doubleheader.
00:40We have got the man himself, Anish Sajan. We have got the Gulf News Sports Editor, A.K. Satish.
00:46And Mr Naresh Mansukhani, who is a Mumbai Indians fan. I mean, I'm sorry, it's not a good day to be a Mumbai Indians fan.
00:56But then we would like to, you know, pick his brains and find out where did Mumbai go wrong for the season to start with.
01:03Anyway, to start with, I'll first come to Anishbhai. And, you know, as we do, we give a, you know, for those who may be tuning in late with our program,
01:13if you can just say a few words about the competition that is on right now.
01:17Well, thank you, Gautam. Hi, Satish. Hi, Naresh. And hello to all the lovely people of Gulf News.
01:24Well, the competition is to predict the winner. And predicting the winner of this IPL, as I said, is very, very difficult.
01:30But if you predict, you walk in a way with the lovely T-shirt which Naresh is wearing and a track pant and a cap, of course, thanks to Gulf News and a digital subscription.
01:39Right. I must say, this T-shirt is really looking jazzy, you know.
01:45Yeah, yeah.
01:48OK, I will come to, you know, since the Mumbai and Lucknow match was an earlier one, I'll come to Naresh bhai first.
01:57First up, I mean, on the face of it, it was quite a spirited chase. But the moment Lucknow got, you know, 199 on the board and KL Rahul got the brilliant century,
02:08it was a bit demoralizing for Mumbai, I think, to go all the way. But today was a fight for survival.
02:15So how are you looking back to Mumbai's campaign so far, Naresh bhai, and what do you think can be done from here?
02:23Well, yeah, it's been disappointing so far, no doubt. Talking only about today's game to start with first was, Rohit Sharma said he wants to chase.
02:34But then what was surprising was his approach in the power play.
02:39You know, you want to bowl first, but you are holding back Bhoomra, who is probably now the only confident bowler, you can say,
02:49because we are still, we are over the six games, but we are still searching for a bowling combination.
02:55So that was a bit of a disappointing move that why Bhoomra is not going up front.
03:01Yes, Quinton Tickock has played a lot for Mumbai. He struggles against spin up front.
03:07But you got a part-time Tilak Verma to start with. So couple of decisions today were a bit strange.
03:14But, you know, there are a lot of talks about how we went about in the auction, but this auction has given us Deval Brevis and Tilak Verma, you know.
03:25So we need to be a little positive on the way things have gone with the batting.
03:30Overall campaign has been disappointing. Out of the six, we chased three, we couldn't make it.
03:35All three were above 190 score. Three, we couldn't defend the total. Big overs were given.
03:42Today also, I felt we came back in the game a bit. After 10, Lucknow was 94.
03:48Last game against Punjab, it was 99 in the first 10. So the second 10 or the second half of the bowling was little better.
03:56Especially the last over of Unadkar was very nice, you know.
04:01So there have been positives. But yes, Bhoomra looks to be a lone stander there who is containing
04:08as well as making those wicket-taking deliveries. We are struggling in both.
04:14We don't have a partner to Bhoomra to contain and then go ahead and take wickets.
04:19So that's a bit disappointing. Good move to get Fabian Allen today.
04:23I felt he should have been there after the first two games. Today, a smaller ground, more grass.
04:29But still, he got the first breakthrough of Quinton De Kock.
04:33A couple of games, he should settle. But we need to get that right bowling combination.
04:39We have tried too much. I think we have overdone the experiments of who should be around Bhoomra to sustain.
04:46It's time we settle down with what we believe in. I think batting has still gone well.
04:51We haven't chased the way we would have liked. Two opportunities for, I would say, Kyron Pollard missed out.
04:59One was the first one against, I think it was Rajasthan Royals and the second one was today's game.
05:06I think in the middle today, Tilak Verma and Surya could have been a little faster.
05:11I think they got a little conservative because they felt that they would do it in the last five.
05:15But when you think that when you get out is where the concern comes.
05:20But batting concern, Rohit Sharma and Ishaan Kishan. Now that's becoming concerning.
05:27Because we don't know who the backup is, if one of the openers is really not continuing to score.
05:34So that's a concern now.
05:36I will come back to Anisbhai before I move on to strategy.
05:41Because I saw the comment which you made, which was on the go.
05:47But you hit the nail on the head by saying that Mumbai got things wrong in the auction.
05:53So if you can just tell us for those who haven't gone through, where was it?
05:58Could the retention have been a little more thought out?
06:01And of course, that decision to invest on Archer when you know that he is not going to play for this season.
06:07Anisbhai, can you talk us through that?
06:10Yeah, Gautam. We are all talking about why Mumbai has gone wrong.
06:15And we are talking about Rohit Sharma, Ishaan Kishan not scoring.
06:18But the fact of the matter is that when you invest on a player who is unavailable.
06:23So either you have thought that this year we are going to take this as a chance and see how it goes.
06:29And expect Jofra Archer and Bumrah as a pair would be great.
06:33We don't know how Jofra Archer is.
06:35Number two, you invested on a player, 8 crores, which is team David.
06:39And you have given him two chances.
06:41Every player needs 3-4 games to get into an IPL.
06:43IPL is one of the toughest formats.
06:46A bigger player like Mitchell Marsh struggled. We will come back to it later.
06:49But many players have struggled. Even Warner in his first game struggled.
06:52So you can't expect a youngster who is just coming of age and show off his skills.
06:57Third, they don't have a spinner, which I forgot to mention in my article, which I am sure we will try and amend it.
07:01They don't have a spinner.
07:03Now, in the auction, they did not bid for Shahal.
07:06They did not bid for Ashwin.
07:08They did not bid for a genuine spinner.
07:11They don't have a spinner.
07:14Murugappan Ashwin as much as he is good.
07:16Fabian Allen is a guy who is good.
07:18You can't expect Fabian Allen to win you games.
07:20Come on. Give me a break, Gautam.
07:22Or to any Mumbai fan.
07:24He can't win you a match with the ball.
07:26They have had a history of Bhoomra bowling well.
07:29But at the same time, these wickets are going to get slower and slower as the match progresses.
07:34As the tournament progresses.
07:36So these are the three cases.
07:38And depending too much on Bhoomra, they are just playing him out.
07:41So in short, Mumbai has got it totally wrong in the auction.
07:44Right.
07:46But Anish, just to follow up.
07:50Satish, one second. I will welcome.
07:52Before we move on, I will welcome Yathat in the discussion.
07:57Welcome, Yathat.
07:59Hello.
08:01He is Yathat Taluja.
08:03You don't have to tell us which team do you belong to.
08:08So we will come to you since we started the discussion little while back.
08:13Not much.
08:15So, yes.
08:17Gautam, Naresh had something to say.
08:19Sorry.
08:21I just wanted to add.
08:23As Anish Bhai said on the spinners.
08:25Markande was part of Mumbai team couple of years back.
08:29He is still part of it. That's what I wanted to tell you.
08:32Yeah.
08:34We don't see him play.
08:37In fact, that particular season which you are referring to.
08:41He was regarded as quite a young sensation with that leg spinner.
08:45Yes, of course, he is there.
08:47But as Anish Bhai is saying, you need a real experienced quality match winning spinner.
08:53That's the point he is trying to make.
08:55Or you go for Vishnoy.
08:59Invest in him.
09:01Anyway, I will just come to Yathat before we move on.
09:04Yathat today was not Delhi's day.
09:07I mean, obviously, they had started off so well.
09:11But then those two efforts.
09:13One was definitely the early momentum where Maxwell tried to break free.
09:18And then, of course, the game-changing innings was that of DK.
09:22Otherwise, they would have ended up somewhere in the region of maybe 160-165.
09:27But in the chase, despite having that good start.
09:31They were 50-1 when they lost Prithvi Shah.
09:34What do you think went wrong, Yathat?
09:37I mean, this seems to be a problem with Delhi.
09:39Obviously, Mitch Marsh was the weak link in the chase.
09:43But we would like to hear from you.
09:45Well, definitely.
09:47When you talk about Delhi Capitals, you got off to a flair of a start.
09:50Both in ball and batting behind.
09:52You have locked down opposition to five against the first 10 overs.
09:56You expect to crumble down.
09:58You had an opportunity to crumble down them to at least 150.
10:02Probably, 160 could have been accepted.
10:05But 190, that was a phenomenal innings from Dinesh Karthik.
10:08And we let that slip off.
10:09We had a chance to choke the opposition.
10:11We could have balled in Mustafizur.
10:13And we could have balled in our the best ballers.
10:16But that was a key link which we missed.
10:18Rishabh Pant, obviously, he dropped the major wicket of Dinesh Karthik when he was just two runs.
10:22But when it came to batting the hand, we have got an extremely talented batting lineup.
10:26We almost batted No. 8.
10:28If you have got Shahrukh Thakur who bats at No. 8, we have got a pretty solid batting lineup.
10:32And we got off to a flair of a start with both Prithvi Shaw as well as David Warner.
10:37David Warner taking the charge, scoring 66.
10:39And then Prithvi Shaw playing a little brisk cameo.
10:42But Mitchell Marsh probably, you know, just coming into the side.
10:45The same story with David Warner, you know, face when he was playing the first game.
10:48And he, you know, filled some nerves.
10:50Probably not the best day for Mitchell Marsh.
10:52But still, we had the game.
10:54Rishabh Pant was playing a gem of innings.
10:5634 of 17 balls.
10:58But as I say, you know, when the fate is not in your hands, the things start to crumble, you know, down a bit.
11:04So, just that outing.
11:06But, you know, you have lost three matches and you are down at the No. 8 position.
11:09So, you have got the quality.
11:11You have got the very best players.
11:13So, I feel that, you know, more of management decisions.
11:16You know, sending Ravan Powell ahead.
11:18I thought that was a very big gamble.
11:20Because, you know, you require 34 of last two overs.
11:23If Ravan Powell hadn't sent there, it could have been a game-changer.
11:26A blinder of an inning.
11:27So, probably some decisions, you know, to be taken.
11:30Concentration of what the game situation is.
11:33We could have this matter really, really sort.
11:35But you need to pick up the momentum.
11:37You need to win two to three matches at a trot.
11:39And just chart a momentum.
11:41Because this is a very young team.
11:43The more positive wins, the more encouragement.
11:45The better this team is going to shine.
11:47But we need wins now.
11:49That is the desperate matter.
11:52Right.
11:53Yeah, that's a very, very, you know, valid observation, I would say.
11:58Now, on that note, I will come to Satish, who had been waiting for a while.
12:03Satish, DK.
12:05At 37 and, you know, about a little more than a year back,
12:10we thought that DK has kind of, you know, had his time in serious cricket.
12:14And he will take up the TV commentary job seriously.
12:18Since he did so well in India's last tour of England,
12:21both for the WTC final and then the Test series.
12:25He said, before the IPL started,
12:27I remember that, you know, I had been doing some kind of training
12:30and I had been prepping for this.
12:32It hasn't come just like that.
12:34What do you think he has done?
12:36Because the range of improvisations that were on display today
12:39is simply amazing.
12:41So, if you can talk about it.
12:43I mean, what has he done to his game?
12:45Or it was always there?
12:47With experience, he is making the best use of that.
12:49I think, Gautam, we have to look at it in a different perspective.
12:54Because, yes, DK playing a brilliant knock.
12:56And I think he has got out only once so far.
12:59So, he has been in the form of his life.
13:02No doubt about it.
13:03But we also look at it from a different perspective,
13:05where Maxwell, who couldn't perform in some other teams,
13:09has come to Bangalore and he is performing.
13:11The DK who couldn't perform in other teams,
13:13he is coming here and performing.
13:15Maybe other players also.
13:17So, that is a lot about the Bangalore team management,
13:20where they must be giving the confidence to the players
13:23and telling them or giving them specific roles,
13:26what needs to be done.
13:28And giving them the free hand to play.
13:30Like, see, obviously, the pressure on the field is one.
13:33But if there is no pressure coming from within the management
13:37about your position or about the way you perform,
13:40or the accountability.
13:42Yes, everybody has an accountability.
13:44But if you want to do it differently,
13:46obviously, DK is a senior player.
13:49You could take charge of things.
13:51So, I would say it is more to do with the Bangalore Royal Challenge
13:55as a Bangalore team management than anything else.
13:59And I hope they do well.
14:01And they seem to be enjoying their game quite well
14:05as the league progresses.
14:10I will come back to Anisbhai.
14:12Yes, I know that Bangalore is one of your favourite teams.
14:15But let's also take a look at the bigger picture.
14:19Four, five rounds down the line,
14:22we have got the two newcomers occupying the top two spots.
14:25So, before we move on to tomorrow's games,
14:28Anisbhai, how do you see this?
14:31I mean, did you see this happening?
14:33Honestly, no. Let me be very honest.
14:36I had spoken about Mumbai definitely not going to make it to the playoffs.
14:41But I was very hopeful about Delhi Capitals
14:44being one of the top teams.
14:46And today, when I saw the squad,
14:48when you look at the batting order,
14:50Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant,
14:52Rambal Paul, Lalit Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Akshar Patel,
14:55till 7 or 8, they have a batting power.
14:57Okay, today Mitchell Marsh, as Yatraj said,
15:00first game, bound to struggle.
15:02Which happens to the best of best players.
15:04But one thing which I feel really sad to see,
15:08Ricky Ponting, who is such a hardcore coach,
15:13rather hardcore captain.
15:14Or Rishabh Pant.
15:15Why wouldn't you call the player back
15:17now that the rule has been set by Ashwin,
15:19that if the player is not getting the ball off the park,
15:22you can call him a retired herd.
15:24Why are you waiting for Christmas?
15:25When a player plays 20% of the overs,
15:28which is 4 overs,
15:29and scores 14 runs,
15:31that has cost you the game.
15:33Because this was a belter of a wicket.
15:34And in the end, as Yatraj mentioned,
15:3730 or 34 runs were required.
15:39And you did not have batters to clear the boundary.
15:41So this situation wouldn't have arised
15:43had you realized, okay, 14-15 balls,
15:45Marsh, your time is up.
15:47Thank you very much.
15:48Take that hard call.
15:49When you take the hard call of dropping a player,
15:51why can't you take the hard call of calling a player?
15:53It might be a little harsh for that player
15:55of Mitchell Marsh's quality.
15:56But he is one of the team men who will understand
15:58that no, the team requires.
15:59And in the end, they ended up with nothing.
16:03Right.
16:04Yeah, I mean, in the Australian culture,
16:06obviously, I don't think even Marsh should have...
16:09It was possibly an end to his agony
16:11that he was run out...
16:13Thank God, it's a blessing in disguise.
16:15Yes.
16:16That didn't help.
16:17Yeah, that didn't help.
16:18No, but I think what has happened is...
16:20I'll come to you, Satish.
16:22I'll come to you, Satish.
16:23This retired out,
16:26as Anisbhai has raised the point.
16:28A quick point from you as to
16:30how much are you in support of this?
16:32Especially when a cricketing sense demands it.
16:35What would you say?
16:37See, retired out is something which is done
16:40because somebody is not good at it.
16:42So if somebody is not good at it,
16:44why do you want to be there?
16:45That's my question.
16:46Yes, it's like a man-cut-out.
16:49It's there.
16:51The rules are there.
16:52It's there.
16:53But my question is,
16:54why would you send somebody who couldn't do it then?
16:58Why would you have to put yourself in that position?
17:01But again,
17:02yeah, Mitchell Marsh is a quality player.
17:04And I'm sure he could have tried better.
17:07That is one.
17:08I think what has happened is,
17:09that's what I was trying to say.
17:10After that assault on...
17:12DK's assault on the 30 overs,
17:16Mustafasev,
17:17I think Delhi stopped thinking.
17:19I think that's where they completely...
17:21Because 167-170 was the pass goal.
17:24It was not chaseable on the one-carrier wickets.
17:27But here you went on to score 190 and that overchange.
17:30And if you look at Ponting's facial expressions after that,
17:34he was glum.
17:35So I think what has happened is,
17:37they completely stopped thinking after that.
17:39And yeah,
17:40they could have called back Mitchell Marsh,
17:42which is okay in the sense it's perfectly accepted.
17:45But what will also happen is,
17:48they must have thought,
17:50okay,
17:51even though he is saying that he will be able to accelerate later on.
17:54Which is also a possibility.
17:57Again,
17:58he can get some time.
18:00Like 16-20 balls on the ground.
18:02He can get that match practice time,
18:04which he had today.
18:05So all that would play a role in taking a decision.
18:10That's why I think they didn't do that.
18:12But yeah,
18:13see,
18:14cricket is moving on.
18:15Retired out is part and parcel of the game.
18:18And it will be in the future.
18:20That's what I wanted to know from you.
18:22Yes,
18:23I mean,
18:24there's plenty to talk about,
18:26but I think we will come to tomorrow's matches now.
18:29Basically,
18:31we have got,
18:32you know,
18:33in the first one,
18:34we have Punjab taking on SRH.
18:37And SRH are looking a bit on the resurgence mode now,
18:41after three back-to-back wins.
18:43And Gujarat Titans,
18:44the top team now,
18:45they are going to take on Chennai.
18:47So I'll start with Naresh Bhai for a change.
18:50A quick prediction as to what do you think is going to happen tomorrow?
18:54Punjab versus Hyderabad and Gujarat versus CSK.
18:58Yeah,
18:59so all the four teams are coming with a win behind them.
19:02You know,
19:03they have won their last games.
19:04All are on a rise.
19:05And now the point tables is such now,
19:07now this is going to get more and more tight.
19:09So it's not only about the two points.
19:12I think now you're going to get into the situation of how we overtake the other team with net run rate also.
19:18So yes,
19:19there would be more smartness we've seen on the field,
19:22on how they restrict the runs and how quickly they score.
19:25But when it comes to these two games,
19:28I would still hold Punjab having a little upper hand to Hyderabad tomorrow.
19:33And Gujarat over Chennai.
19:36I would go with these two teams for tomorrow.
19:40Yathat,
19:41your prediction very quickly.
19:43I mean,
19:44you know,
19:45Naresh has completely covered all the points.
19:47All the teams coming after,
19:48you know,
19:49a blaster of points.
19:50I feel,
19:51you know,
19:52Punjab and Hyderabad are going to be a closely matched game.
19:53I feel that game going down to the wire.
19:56But I feel Punjab,
19:57you know,
19:58competitively a better side.
19:59And I,
20:00you know,
20:01hope something from the comeback rise,
20:02Chennai Super Kings.
20:03So I think Punjab and Chennai Super Kings have a better chance for tomorrow's game.
20:07That's interesting.
20:09Aniz Bhai,
20:10we would like to hear from you.
20:12Yeah,
20:13the first game is going to be tight.
20:14But like everybody says,
20:15Punjab,
20:16I would say the team batting first.
20:18I've seen in all the day games,
20:19the team which is batting first has gone on to win the match.
20:22And I believe it's going to happen tomorrow too.
20:24We'll have to wait and watch.
20:25And in the second game,
20:26we are talking about who's playing?
20:29Chennai and Gujarat.
20:31Well,
20:32the momentum is with Gujarat.
20:34They're flying high with their captain leading from the front.
20:36So you have to back Gujarat.
20:37But CSK has come on a win.
20:39We'll have to wait and watch.
20:41Right.
20:42Could this be the turning point for Chennai?
20:46Putting 200-plus total on the board.
20:50And your overall take on these two matches.
20:53Yeah.
20:54The first game,
20:55I would still go with Punjab.
20:57Because I still feel Sunrisers are not a full-fledged team.
21:02And they are not fully up and running.
21:05They are somehow winning the matches.
21:07I can see that.
21:08But they are not winning it convincingly in my view.
21:14They are somehow managing it.
21:17But I would still go with Punjab tomorrow as well.
21:20Because Kane,
21:21I'm still not convinced with his form.
21:25They still lack that momentum which would take them forward.
21:31And the second game,
21:32I would certainly back Chennai.
21:34Because for two reasons,
21:35Gujarat has been on a very good run.
21:37So the law of averages could catch up with them tomorrow.
21:40I hope so.
21:41Because Chennai has been my team.
21:43I can't deny that.
21:44But my point is,
21:46after 220 runs against this Bangalore attack,
21:50of course, Harshal Patel was not there.
21:52It would give Chennai the confidence.
21:54And a confident Chennai is a different team altogether.
21:57It's difficult to beat them.
22:00Right.
22:02Even I, very quickly,
22:03I would like to add that,
22:05when Chennai have their tails up,
22:07sometimes they do come up with the surprises.
22:09There are a lot of question marks over the new ball attack still.
22:14And now that Deepak Chahar has been ruled out for good for the season.
22:18But I would still go with,
22:20say that Chennai has got a bit of the edge,
22:22along with the law of averages.
22:25And the first game,
22:27yes, I think I'll have to go with Punjab Kings.
22:30Because they have the depth this season.
22:33So let's see how it goes.
22:36Meanwhile, thank you for joining us.
22:38Special thanks to Naresh Bhai and Yathar,
22:41for joining us and providing the viewpoint.
22:44Some very interesting points there.
22:46Tomorrow, we will come back,
22:48after the match,
22:50with a bigger discussion.
22:52Stay tuned.
22:53Thank you and good night.
