00:00Former Sarawak Attorney General J.C. Fong has been urged not to rewrite history by claiming

00:08that Sarawak was never consulted on the passing of the Petroleum Development Act 1974.

00:15Former Law Minister Zayed Ibrahim told FMT that the claim that Sarawak did not know of

00:20the PDA is baseless as the state's Chief Minister at the time, Abdulrahman Yacoub, was heavily

00:26involved.

00:27Zayed said Fong's comment was a serious allegation and questioned why such a claim was only surfacing

00:33now after five decades.

00:35According to Dayak Daily, Fong said that the law had been drafted in secret by former Finance

00:40Minister Tunku Razali Hamzah and his associates under instructions from then-Prime Minister

00:46Abdul Razak Hussain in time for the 1974 general election.

00:51Fong claimed that Sarawak was presented with a fait accompli and had to sign an agreement

00:55to accept 5% cash payment for vesting all its petroleum resources in Petronas.

01:02In a previous interview with FMT, Tunku Razali said Rahman had led the charge in drafting

01:07the PDA, which provided Petronas with the right to exploit oil and gas reserves throughout

01:12Malaysia, although exploitation of mineral rights had been reserved to the states.

01:18He was the one who mooted this idea.

01:21Then I was asked to see how best we handle this situation, and in consultation with Rahman,

01:31with his cabinet, but Rahman is a very forceful leader of Sarawak.

01:39You don't play around with him.

01:42He's also a lawyer, and he is aware of what Sarawak wants.

01:53And I think we respected all that, and that went into Petronas based on the views of Rahman.

02:03Zaid also said there was no reason for Tunku Razali to lie about the matter and urged Fong

02:09to not try to rewrite history.

02:12I don't benefit anything by not telling the truth.
