00:00Good morning!
00:02We're back with PTV Sports!
00:04We might be able to talk via Zoom.
00:06Ms. Josephine Joy Reyes,
00:08Executive Director of National Academy of Sports,
00:11Archie Lim, the Head Programmer of Swimming,
00:14Karen Jaleco, Head of Programming and Table Tennis,
00:18Rianna Coman, Swimmer, and Coach Dax Halili,
00:21Good morning to all of you!
00:24Good morning to you all.
00:27Morning!
00:28Morning!
00:29Good morning. Good morning.
03:59And you might want to ask some more questions.
04:04Ms. Josephine, it's funny that the approach of the National Academy of Sports is very holistic.
04:10From nutrition, academics, and of course, world-class coaches will guide our athletes here.
04:20But Ms. Josephine, who can actually join the National Academy of Sports?
04:25Is it open for everybody or should you be an athlete already?
04:30Yeah, okay. That's a good question.
04:33Actually, we have an annual search, what we call the NAS and SAS,
04:39where we select exceptional, notable, talented student-athletes, scholars.
04:49So it means that the academy is a pool of talented athletes.
04:55So we select the cream of the crop of our country.
04:59So that's basically the direction and the mandate of NAS.
05:04So not everyone can join NAS.
05:08They will go through a selection process.
05:11They also go through physiological tests that are being conducted by our coaches.
05:20But we select them in such a way that their skills are being tested.
05:29Of course, these are preferred.
05:33They are podium finishers from Palarong Pambansa or from Batang Pinoy or any national competitions.
05:42So that's how we select our athletes.
05:47So that's why the students in the National Academy of Sports are pure talents.
05:53They are pure talents and they already have mastered their respective sports.
06:00As a partner, before you qualify to be part of the National Sports Academy,
06:05you should already have national competitions and you've already proven yourself worthy to be part of it.
06:12So it's not easy to enter this academy.
06:17And we also want to hear from our athletes.
06:22Because this is a different set-up as a student, right?
06:27Because this is not just a straight-forward curriculum that we go through like most of us.
06:35Purely academic, majority of the time, academics, concentrated in academics.
06:39Maybe our fellow athletes in the program,
06:42please tell us how was your experience in your studies here in the academy
06:50and how would you compare it to a regular academic set-up?
07:00Maybe Rihanna, our swimmer, can answer this.
07:06What was the question?
07:10Oh, okay.
07:11It's English.
07:12So we have to translate in English. Sorry, Rihanna.
07:15Okay, so this isn't a normal set-up for the usual student
07:20because the academy offers a different type of approach to education
07:27because it balances your academics with being a national athlete.
07:32So how was the experience so far and how would you differentiate it
07:36from the usual school experience that you've had before?
07:41My experience so far, it's pretty good.
07:44This is my second year in NAS and it's nothing but good.
07:48It differentiates from other schools since in normal schools,
07:54they don't really focus on sports and they give you a ton of work
07:58and they make you focus more on the work instead of your sport
08:02even if you're already pursuing it.
08:04But in NAS, they give you plenty of time to submit your works
08:08and they mainly make you focus on your sport
08:12since that's why we're here for our sport.
08:16Rihanna, what inspired you to pursue swimming in such a high-level competition
08:22and how has your journey shaped you as a person and as an athlete?
08:28I think it's because ever since I was a baby, I've always loved the water
08:35and then when I first got into competitive swimming,
08:39I've always loved the feeling since I'm a very competitive person
08:42and that's where I get most of my friends is from competing
08:48and it's just a very friendly environment in swimming.
08:52We just also want to ask how you balance your academics with your athletics
08:59and I'm pretty sure, partner, this has helped her.
09:02The setup that she has right now with NAS is very helpful for doing that.
09:06Can you just share with us how you balance your academics and your athletics, Rihanna?
09:14I do my best to have a good schedule for my school first
09:20and then I focus on what I need to get done before I go back into working out
09:26because I have strict parents and I know that if I don't pass,
09:32I'm not going to be able to work out as much as I want to.
09:35So I do my best to maintain high grades and as well as to work hard in training as well
09:41since I also have a strict coach.
09:45Coach Dax, did you hear that? You're strict now.
09:50Coach, I just want to ask, what are your programs to ensure that your athletes compete at the highest level?
09:59Our program is made by our head programmer, Coach Archie Lim,
10:06also known as the Olympian Maker.
10:13What I'm doing here is regularly assessing performance data,
10:17feedback from athletes and competitions results.
10:21As a coach, I'm implementing the training programs that Coach Archie Lim made.
10:33Coach, I just want to add, here at NAS, you put pride in your system that is science-based,
10:43can you expound on that?
10:48Sorry, sorry, sorry.
10:51Do you have any pride on integrating sports science in your coaching?
10:59We have our own sports development program which is made up with our head programmer.
11:09Our program is sports-specific for the individual sports like swimming.
11:22It's specific, it's not just a regular training program from others,
11:29but they made it for the athletes to develop internationally.
11:35Sooner or later, it will be for the Olympians.
11:41Coach, how do you think NAS can help shape the new age of athletes?
11:52Your program is really good.
11:56It's catered, it's customized for our athletes.
12:05How do you believe this would help in terms of the future of our athletes?
12:14Coach Archie, maybe you want to answer that?
12:17Oh, yeah, hello, good morning.
12:20Yes, maybe more on that.
12:24As mentioned by ED, the program of NAS, not only in aquatics,
12:28it's science-based and holistic, but also individualized and customized.
12:34Remember, as an athlete, it's not just all training,
12:38like for us, just all swimming.
12:40Of course, there's strength and conditioning, there's nutrition,
12:43there's the balance of sports psychology,
12:45and all of this stuff that we really try to develop the athlete,
12:51especially mentally.
12:53We have to remember, most of our athletes, when they enter NAS,
12:58they're grade 7, grade 8, they're still young.
13:01So we're also thinking about long-term development.
13:04In long-term development, developing discipline and mental toughness is very important.
13:11That's what we're talking about.
13:14And even among the athletes we've talked to,
13:17you just don't develop physical strength, but also mental strength.
13:22And we'll see in NAS that this is also one of the things they're developing.
13:26Meanwhile, my question to Coach Karen,
13:29Coach, what would you say has been the most rewarding part
13:34of your coaching in NAS?
13:36Oh, very rewarding because we created a world champion already
13:43with the name of Kevin Keith Isoy-Cruz.
13:46So he is one of the face of table tennis now
13:50because he garnered around three golds in a row at this early stage.
13:58And then the table tennis program is like, you know,
14:01we're in cloud nine because we contributed many medals last year
14:08as well as in the Philippine Table Tennis Federation.
14:11The athletes, our young athletes are going beyond what is expected of them.
14:19Bringing home gold in table tennis as well as in the National Academy of Sports
14:25like I mentioned earlier,
14:28it's not just about playing when you enter NAS.
14:32Being a student here, you have to balance both of your academics
14:36as well as your sports performances.
14:39Now, I have here, we have players here,
14:42are also competitive in academics.
14:45Permit me, I will share this to you.
14:48I have 26 athletes and 22 of them are with honors
14:52and five of them are with high honors.
14:55You see, in this school, we don't just play.
15:00We stick to our mandate, especially with our program in table tennis.
15:04And we also coordinate with our support service
15:10and also the people behind that are helping us to achieve our dream
15:16because the next step will be the Youth Olympic Games
15:19and we are preparing for that physically and mentally
15:22and we will apply all the training programs needed
15:25by our student-athletes here in National Academy of Sports.
15:28Alright.
15:30Partner, I just want to hear from Ma'am Josephine
15:35because this is something revolutionary.
15:37No one has done this in the country, except for NAS.
15:40So, when you do something like this,
15:43Ma'am Josephine, what are the hurdles and challenges that you face
15:49in running this institution
15:52and what do you think is the support needed by NAS
15:56so that we can continue to develop?
16:04Yeah, Hi Raph.
16:06Actually, the challenges are always being experienced every day
16:12and the challenges that we experience here are different.
16:18But of course, these challenges are our best experiences.
16:22These are our best opportunities so that we can move on
16:26and we can improve our performance and how we can support our athletes.
16:31So, of course, in government,
16:37usually our challenges are the procurement of equipment.
16:42That's very normal.
16:45But these are the things that we are facing right now.
16:48And of course, some budget,
16:52the allocation of our budget for training,
16:58even for competitions and even the support.
17:02These are just the things that we are addressing.
17:06We are also seeking help when we do budget preparation.
17:13But everything is being addressed, Raph.
17:16So, we are trying to improve our system,
17:20the way we handle the things that are needed by the student-athletes.
17:29Because our center here is to provide the best services,
17:37the best support that we can for our student-athletes.
17:41Usually, how they can cope with their academics,
17:50these are already being addressed.
17:52We thank the academic department for supporting this endeavor.
17:57Since we ensure that our athletes, when they're away,
18:01they're being provided a special learning modality or a flexible learning.
18:12So, our athletes, as Rihanna mentioned a while ago,
18:17they're given ways to cope with their academics.
18:21And also, Coach Karen expressed how the composition of our athletes
18:27not only achieving in their sports, performance in sports,
18:33but they're also achievers in terms of academics.
18:36So, these things are the balance that we're facing now.
18:44So now, we are already improving how we handle things in the acads in school
18:50and even when they're outside competing.
18:52So, we're already adjusting there, Meg and Raf.
18:58Because that's our challenge.
19:00How the coping mechanism of the kids when they're competing
19:04and also when they're training, the kinds of training and how we can blend
19:09and marry also the teachers and the coaches' partnership and cooperation.
19:18But we are now already in our transition period.
19:22So, the kids are able to adjust.
19:24So, at least we are able to streamline all our activities
19:31and all the things that are needed in school.
19:34Ms. Josephine, the mission and vision of NAS is very beautiful.
19:38But how do you ensure the continuity of the development and growth of NAS?
19:43Do you partner with both private and the local sectors?
19:48NAS partnerships and private corporations is really a breakthrough
19:55in tapping private resources and even gaining national mileage
20:00in support for the optimal development of our athletes.
20:03So, most especially, very recently, Jollibee gave us a 5 million donation
20:18and this is in the form of equipment.
20:24So, that 5 million was planned so that they'll be able to help us
20:36enhance our existing facilities and even giving us a more improved equipment
20:46for table tennis as well.
20:47So, this is the good cooperation that our private sectors are also sharing.
20:57They are also sharing what they want to happen for our future Olympians
21:07since this is one of our mandate that our student-athletes will also be future Olympians.
21:11So, it's beneficial for NAS as they see also the improvements
21:17and the performances of our student-athletes.
21:20So, again, I'll go back to Jollibee, their tagline of Bidang Saya.
21:29With that donation, we are really, of course, beyond grateful for that donation
21:35and giving our students a fine and better training experiences
21:43as we will be able to accommodate more of them.
21:46Of course, in the part of the students when they realize or when they learn
21:56that there are private sectors that are supporting us.
22:00Of course, I also wanted to mention Milo.
22:02So, it gives them motivation and inspiration to train harder
22:07and bring pride to our country.
22:10Because, of course, they see and feel companies like them.
22:14These companies also believe in the talents of our students.
22:20Alright. So, unfortunately, that's where our time ends.
22:25Thank you very much for your time this morning, Ms. Josephine
22:28and the rest of our National Academy of Sports, Coach Archie Lim,
22:34Coach Dax Halili, Karen Halejo, and, of course, our athlete, Rianna Coleman.
22:44Thank you to all of you.
22:46Thank you very much.
