00:00U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio meets Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem as he kicks
00:06off his first tour of the Middle East.
00:11Washington says Kiev and Brussels will be part of, quote, real peace negotiations as
00:16it looks to ease tensions with Europe.
00:22Papal thriller, conclave and epic drama The Brutalist match an awards tally with each
00:26taking home four prizes at the BAFTAs.
00:34U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Israel as the first stop in his first tour
00:39of the Middle East.
00:41On his trip, he met Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
00:46Rubio discussed U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial Gaza proposal with the Israeli
00:51premier, among a range of other regional issues.
00:55The new U.S. state secretary backed Trump's plan for Gaza as he cited a need for change.
01:01What cannot continue is the same cycle where we repeat over and over again and wind up
01:05in the exact same place.
01:07Related to that, the president's been very clear.
01:09Hamas cannot continue as a military or government force.
01:14And frankly, as long as it stands as a force that can govern or as a force that can administer
01:18or as a force that can threaten by use of violence, peace becomes impossible.
01:27Netanyahu says Trump's plan is the only viable option that enables a different future.
01:32The Israeli prime minister says he's maintaining close contact with the U.S. president to navigate
01:37Israel's next steps.
01:41President Trump and I are working in full cooperation and coordination between us.
01:47We have a common strategy and we can't always share the details of this strategy with the
01:53public, including when the gates of hell will be opened, as they surely will if all our
02:00hostages are not released until the last one of them.
02:05Rubio will set off to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates next as he continues
02:10his tour.
02:11He's opted to skip Egypt and Jordan after they refused to accept Palestinians displaced
02:16from Gaza.
02:23Ukraine and Europe worry about being sidelined as Trump remains persistent to go ahead with
02:27direct talks with Russia to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine.
02:32In the coming days, a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio will engage
02:37in direct talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia.
02:41The move came as a shock to Europe, who believe they should also be included in any peace
02:45talks as they also serve an important role.
02:49The move has prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to organize an emergency summit in
02:53Paris to discuss Europe's response.
02:57In a bid to ease tensions, Rubio said that Europe and Ukraine will be involved in quote
03:02real peace talks.
03:04He also noted that the Riyadh meeting is an opportunity to gauge the seriousness of Moscow
03:08on pursuing peace.
03:11U.S. President Donald Trump echoed a similar rhetoric on Sunday.
03:34Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Abu Dhabi late on Sunday.
03:39It's not yet clear what's on the agenda for Zelensky.
03:42Kiev has not shared details on the President's trip, nor confirmed rumors of possible Ukrainian
03:47participation in Riyadh.
03:54European leaders are set to gather in Paris for an emergency summit on the war in Ukraine
03:58to discuss recent developments next week.
04:01The summit aims to discuss Europe's response as the United States looks to move ahead with
04:05Russia peace talks.
04:07Over the past few days, Washington has made clear its desire to broker a peace deal in
04:11Ukraine but has ruled out including Europe in the negotiations.
04:15The development has angered European leaders who say no lasting peace can be achieved without
04:20European involvement.
04:22The summit has not yet been officially confirmed, but European officials at the Munich Security
04:27Conference have hinted at it likely happening on Monday.
04:30Washington's decision to exclude Europe comes despite Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky's
04:34insistence on the involvement of Brussels.
04:37Speaking at the conference in Germany, he called for the formation of a European army.
04:42Zelensky says the days where Europe can rely on the U.S. are over, arguing that the continent
04:47must reduce its reliance on anyone but itself.
04:53Germany is facing a defining moment as its economic model, long reliant on cheap Russian
04:57gas and exports to China, lies in tatters.
05:02Europe's largest economy has stagnated with no real growth in five years, leaving businesses
05:07and citizens anxious about the future.
05:11The upcoming national election on February 23 will be crucial in delivering a fresh strategy
05:16to revive the nation.
05:18For the past 75 years, Germany has been built very much on consensus, stability oriented,
05:24lots of checks and balances in the political system.
05:28And that makes rapid change very difficult.
05:32And we need to have or need to change the mindset to first understand we need to be
05:38much faster on economic transformations.
05:42Multiple factors have contributed to Germany's decline.
05:45Excessive bureaucracy, shortage of skilled workers, slow technological adoption and a
05:50lack of clear leadership from the outgoing coalition government are some of them.
05:55For example, the automotive sector, the shift towards electric cars, there many German companies
06:02have been too slow.
06:04They have enjoyed the success of the 2010s and they have been too slow in understanding
06:11that they need to change and adapt.
06:14On the other hand, external challenges such as rising competition from China and soaring
06:18energy prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine weakened German companies' position.
06:23The skyrocketing electricity prices made German industries less competitive globally.
06:28Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers, backed by state subsidies, have eroded demand for German
06:34machinery and cars.
06:36To revitalize the economy, many call for loosening constitutional debt limits to boost spending
06:41on infrastructure and education.
06:44I really hope with the new government in Germany we can get this solved because at the moment
06:48it's too much bureaucracy.
06:52So we really need to make a more company and enterprise-friendly politic again.
07:02As the nation grapples with these challenges, the next government will have to prioritize
07:06agility and adaptation to secure its future.
07:14North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended a groundbreaking ceremony for new apartment construction
07:18on the anniversary of his late father's birthday, state media reported on Monday.
07:24Video from state broadcaster KRT showed Kim Jong-un making a speech at the groundbreaking
07:27event.
07:28This time the footage included his voice, which is rare.
07:34He spoke to a crowd of construction workers and then twisted the switch to ignite explosions.
07:42The project is in the suburbs of the capital Pyongyang, called the Hwasong district.
07:46It's a part of a push to build 50,000 new apartments within five years.
07:53The BAFTA goes to Conclave.
07:56Papal thriller Conclave starring Ralph Fiennes was the big winner at the BAFTA's taking home
08:01four prizes, including best picture.
08:07Thank you, Ralph and Isabella.
08:13What you did to me on on set was when I watched you was pure magic and was beyond my grasp
08:18or understanding.
08:19And the BAFTA goes to Epic Drama.
08:23The Brutalist equaled the award, Stanley, scooping four trophies, including best director
08:28and best actor for Adrian Brody.
08:30You know, this film is really about this pursuit of leaving something meaningful.
08:37And I think that's something we can all relate to.
08:41So I congratulate you all.
08:43Mikey Madison.
08:46Mikey Madison won the best actress for Palme d'Or winner and Nora really wasn't expecting
08:53this.
08:54I probably should have listened to my publicist and wrote a speech or something.
08:58And the BAFTA goes to Zoe Saldana.
09:03Kieran Culkin won the Supporting Performer Prize for his role in A Real Pain, while Zoe
09:07Saldana took home the Supporting Actress Award for Emilia Perez.
09:12How do you begin to even approach a film that just defies categorization?
09:18And you start by taking the lead with Jack O'Dear.
09:23So thank you so very much.
09:27Brady Corbett.
09:31Brady Corbett won the best director for The Brutalist.
09:35I'm very grateful all the same to my cast, my crew, my family.
09:43Thank you for dealing with me for the last seven or eight years.
09:48Amanda Anissimova won the WTA 1000 Women's Final here at the Khalifa International Tennis
09:54Stadium in Qatar.
09:55It was a 6-4, 6-3 straight set victory for the 23-year-old American who's back in top
10:00form after taking a mental health break in 2023.
10:04Anissimova lifted the trophy on Saturday night after winning the biggest title of her
10:08career, set to bring her world ranking to No. 18.
10:12Now attention shifts to the men's circuit.
10:14Five of the top ten men's players are here with one shocking absence.
10:19World No. 1 Yannick Sinner, seen here practicing in Doha just last week, agreed to a three-month
10:24ban from the World Anti-Doping Association.
10:27A dark cloud has hovered over Sinner since last March, when the 23-year-old tested positive
10:32twice for a banned substance.
10:34But there's still plenty of star power on hand, including 24-time Grand Slam champion
10:38Novak Djokovic, who's back, determined to win his 100th singles title this week.
10:44The 37-year-old Serbian fan-favorite is looking to get back on track after a hamstring injury
10:48forced him to drop out of the Australian Open last month.
10:51With Sinner out of the competition, attention turns to the No. 1 seed.
10:55Earlier this week, I sat down with 21-year-old Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz and asked
11:00him how he feels being compared to legends like Nadal, Federer and Djokovic.
11:05Honestly, it's a privilege to be compared to those legends.
11:10But I try not to think about it just too much, just trying to keep going my own path.
11:16I didn't expect, you know, to be in the position that I am right now in such a young age.
11:24I'm just 21, hopefully, you know, a lot of years ahead.
11:29But I'm just happy to have done everything I've done already.
11:35The week-long men's tournament begins on Monday, and there's more than 2.5 million euros up
11:39for grabs for the player who lifts the trophy.
11:42Adil Halim, Euronews, Doha.
