00:00Whale sharks are known to be migratory fish, which need to be in constant motion to keep
00:05the flow of water over and into their gills.
00:08Hence feeding them their custom diet may alter such behavior and put them biologically at
00:13risk.
00:14As such, the provincial government of Bohol has issued a complete stoppage into humans
00:18feeding whale sharks in the towns of Lila, Dakis, and Albequerque, as PIA Bohol correspondent
00:24Elvira Bongocha reports.
00:28To protect Bohol's tourism and enforce the law against feeding the migratory marine mammals,
00:34the provincial government of Bohol has suspended the whale shark interaction activities in
00:38the province.
00:39Executive Order No. 10, Series of 2025, was recently signed ordering the indefinite stoppage
00:45of all whale shark interactions in Lila, Albequerque, and Dawis towns.
00:50The order was issued based on the findings of an interagency team which found that the
00:54whale shark interactions involved feeding them with krill to lure the marine mammals
00:59to stay.
01:00This is in violation of Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-008 and Joint Memorandum Circular
01:06No. 1, Series of 2020, issued by the Department of Tourism, Department of Environment and
01:12Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Interior and Local Government.
01:18The suspension of the whale shark feeding shall remain enforced until all applicable
01:22requirements for these activities have been met following a comprehensive industry-wide
01:26consultation with stakeholders and conservation groups.
01:30From Philippine Information Agency, Bohol, Elvira Bongocha for Balitang Pamansa.
