Abalos on Marcos' support for senatorial bid

On the sidelines of the Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas press conference on Feb. 18, 2025, The Manila Times 'Lights, Camera, Boto' asks former Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos how he feels about President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s unwavering support for his Senate candidacy, and now that he's in the thick of the campaign, if his cameos in several TV series last year has helped his bid.

00:00It's a very overwhelming feeling that I have right now.
00:04Even up to now, he's treating me like family.
00:07I've worked as his campaign manager.
00:10I've served in his team as a cabinet.
00:15So, it's very fulfilling that we are able to marry them.
00:20They treat you as their best friend.
00:23They're very much concerned.
00:24There's a lot of pressure amongst everyone.
00:27I'm the one who's new, especially in my affiliation.
00:30That's my problem.
00:32We're from Metro Manila, right?
00:35Yes, yes, yes.
00:36That's why I'm always saying,
00:38I hope I can see accomplishments.
00:42I want to know more about the platform,
00:45what I can do, and what I can accomplish.
00:47I always call him,
00:49I call him, I call him,
00:52especially the elders.
00:54It's very fun.
00:55That's how they recognize me.
00:57Because before, when I was in LaSalle,
01:00we won the Best Play.
01:02We won the Platinum.
01:03We already have it.
01:05But then, I'm also a lawyer,
01:07so I'm good at memorizing.
01:09But the problem with showbiz is that
01:12you don't memorize your script.
01:14You internalize, and then you act.
01:17So, you put yourself in there.
01:19I'm a fast learner.
01:21Sometimes, what happens is,
01:23before you do an action,
01:25you should have respect for one month
01:28before you do a drama.
01:30For me, it's a waste.
01:32Like in Black Rider,
01:34there's a gun like this,
01:35and then after, you're dead.
01:37So, I mean, there are elements.
01:39Because my role is as a lawyer,
01:41so it's easy.
01:42Then, my role as Secretary of the DILG,
01:45it's easy too.
01:47Then, the action,
01:49because I'm an athlete.
01:51I box, I swim,
01:53and every day, I'm in the gym.
01:55So, it's easy for my body.
01:57That's where I'm lucky.
01:59So, if ever you're invited,
02:01do you have a match?
02:02No problem.
02:03But what's embarrassing is,
02:05sometimes,
02:07like for example,
02:08Katrina Halili, I saw her,
02:10and Bep,
02:12the type,
02:13she said,
02:14she'll cry,
02:15she'll cry,
02:16she'll internalize.
02:17You can't be mistaken.
02:18Because once you're mistaken,
02:20she'll cry.
02:21Or maybe,
02:22the script is too long,
02:24you'll be mistaken,
02:25that's dangerous.
02:26Because I don't sing,
02:28I don't dance.
02:30That's my problem.
02:32Maybe I don't do magic.
02:34I don't do magic.
02:35We look forward to seeing you.
02:37No, no, no.
02:39Thank you so much.
02:47You're welcome.
