00:00The snow and ice continues to impact the northeast, bringing dangerous
00:03travel conditions. Not much ice right now, it's mostly snow.
00:07Acura, there's Allie Reed is live in Virginia Beach this morning with the latest.
00:13Allie, what can you tell us?
00:18Guys, it is bitter cold here in Virginia Beach. That's not something you say often,
00:23and it's certainly not something that you say in terms of the amount of snowfall that we saw here,
00:28right? Yesterday, I was saying, I think we're going to see anywhere from potentially 9 to 12
00:32inches of snow. By the way, a lot of areas around here and around the Hampton Roads region
00:38saw exactly that. Here in Virginia Beach, most areas are reporting about 9.5 inches of snowfall.
00:46Residents here say, wow, this isn't something that we've seen in 10 plus years, potentially.
00:52Look at this. I mean, this gives you a great idea just how much snow came down here,
00:56untouched snow, all along here, leading up to the boardwalk and onto the beach here in
01:00Virginia Beach. And I wanted to show you this too. Really cool. This is a snow drift here.
01:05It shows you just how deep it can get. And if you could show my feet, look at that.
01:09This certainly gives you a good perspective of how much snow really came down here last night.
01:14And it came down very, very fast. But let's look at the sunrise this morning,
01:20coming up over Virginia Beach. It is absolutely gorgeous. Waves a little calmer than what they
01:25were looking like yesterday. I don't know. They were looking a little scary to me yesterday as
01:29the snow was coming in. Wind, I'm sure, was helping that too. It was a very windy day yesterday.
01:36Bitter cold here this morning. I want to show you what it looked like in the last hour, if we can.
01:41Let's take to this video. This was driving through Norfolk into Virginia Beach earlier this morning.
01:46My photographer, Andy, was able to get some dash cam video to show you what the roads were looking
01:51like this morning. And I will say, I'll start off by saying, we are pleasantly surprised.
01:56Okay, look at these roads. Virginia's standards, you guys know, they do not get snowfall like they
02:02do in other parts of the country. So we were wondering overnight, okay, what could this
02:06potentially look like come this morning? As you can see, not terrible, given how much snowfall
02:12we saw yesterday. I'm taking that as a positive. Okay, let's take to some more video, if we can.
02:17This was from yesterday. And this is why I was concerned about what it was going to look like
02:23this morning, given that there was accidents, crashes, people stalled out all over the roadways,
02:29major roadways, all day last night. And really, as it continued to pick up on that, it was rough.
02:36You know, at times they were having to shut down major roads, tunnels, bridges at points because
02:43they were completely taking over westbound lanes, eastbound lanes, and it was a total mess last
02:48night. Some numbers that I was able to get this morning, I'm told there was potentially right
02:55around 180 crashes that happened throughout the day yesterday, nine people injured. That's a
03:02significant amount for what we saw in this area. I'm grateful that it wasn't anything more than
03:08that. But we saw that there was a couple of rescues that had happened yesterday too, given
03:12that there was a car in Suffolk, which is where we started our reporting yesterday, had ended up
03:17in the water right off of a highway as well. So it was a busy day yesterday, much calmer today.
03:23If we can, let's bring you back live. Again, gorgeous here on Virginia Beach. It's cold,
03:28there's no doubt about it. But I mean, geez, look at that. What do they say? Like, just the beauty
03:34after the storm, right? The sun just coming up over the water. Another beautiful day here in
03:39Virginia Beach. Oh, Andy, can you show that dog? Are you zooming in on that dog? Yeah,
03:45I think we'd all like to be that dog this morning. Just a happy dog enjoying the snow.
03:52Just want to take it in for a second. Oh, what a good day to be in Virginia Beach.
03:57And I think the overall consensus here is, yeah, it's a lot of snow. I think a lot of people are
04:03happy to see the snow here because it doesn't happen very often, guys. And they're just grateful
04:08to see this amount of snow because, Bernie, Ari, as we know, it does not happen very often here.
04:14No, it does not. You know, we have another example of not footprints in the sand at the
04:19beach, but footprints in the snow. That doesn't happen much either.
