00:00Did FC Porto's former president predict the Lisbon earthquake on the day of his funeral?
00:09An image of the front page of an old Portuguese newspaper is circulating on social media,
00:15claiming that Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, the late former president of FC Porto,
00:20predicted a tremor in Lisbon on the day of his funeral.
00:23It's dated the 30th of July 2005 and quotes Pinto da Costa as saying,
00:28For those fools who wish me dead, I smile but I won't forget.
00:32On the day that I'm buried, Porto will cry but Lisbon will feel an earthquake.
00:37Or my name isn't Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa.
00:40The front page quickly became viral on Portuguese social networks
00:44because Lisbon did indeed record an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8
00:48on the Richter scale on the 17th of February, the same day as Pinto da Costa's funeral.
00:53Various social posts have linked the two events using the front page from O Comercio de Porto,
00:59claiming that Pinto da Costa made a prediction 20 years ago that eerily came true.
01:04However, the front page is fake.
01:06There's no evidence that Pinto da Costa, who passed away on the 15th of February
01:10after battling prostate cancer, ever made such a prediction.
01:14The clue here is the date of the supposed front page.
01:18The 30th of July 2005 is actually the day that O Comercio de Porto published its last ever issue.
01:23The real front page is dedicated to the newspaper's farewell,
01:27as reported at the time by Pubblico, which has also debunked the claims.
01:31A photo of Pinto da Costa, his supposed quote,
01:35and a headline celebrating 20 years of his presidency at Porto
01:39have replaced the real headline, which says,
01:41See you next time, and a photo of the editorial team.
01:45The headline on the fake edition is also wrong anyway.
01:48Pinto da Costa had served 23 years as Porto's president by the 30th of July 2005, not 20.
