There’s been a major breakthrough in quantum computing!! Microsoft’s research has led to the creation of Majorana 1 - a chip that can perform incredibly complex calculations that would be impossible for even the largest classical computers… and I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to see in person!!
This chip operates in a new topological state of matter, using Majorana particles instead of electrons, allowing it to store up to a million qubits. To achieve this, the chip is housed in an incredibly advanced freezer that can cool it down to just 50 millikelvin, 10 times colder than interstellar space.
This compact, powerful quantum computer has the potential to revolutionize fields like AI and scientific research.

00:00Did you know that the coldest place in the universe is actually not interstellar space anymore?
00:04It's right here, in this lab, inside this incredibly high-tech freezer that is housing
00:08one of the biggest breakthroughs in quantum computing history.
00:11For the last 19 years, Microsoft's research in quantum computing has all led to this.
00:15Meet Majorana 1.
00:17The calculations that this is able to deliver are so complicated
00:20that even if today's computer was the size of the entire planet,
00:24it would still not be able to compute it.
00:26They've managed to create an entirely new state of matter,
00:29not a solid, liquid, or a gas, but a topological state.
00:33So for this chip, they're not building it from electrons.
00:36They're using Majoranas for computing, which is an entirely new particle.
00:39It's actually half of an electron,
00:41allowing it to store up to a million qubits on a single chip.
00:44For context, something like this normally would have taken the size of a warehouse to achieve.
00:48But they've managed to fit it inside of a chip that I can hold in my hand.
00:51Now the wild part is to get this new state of matter,
00:53they need very specific conditions that this fancy freezer is able to deliver.
00:57It takes about a day to fully cool, but it's able to get down to 50 millikelvin,
01:02which is about 10 times cooler than interstellar space.
01:05So why is this so important?
01:07What used to take up large amounts of space,
01:09it can now all be done with this palm-sized chip.
01:11But the calculations that it's able to deliver are so extremely accurate.
01:15Most lab experiments can be done on a quantum computer instead of an actual lab.
01:20With AI, it'll be able to augment the AI capabilities to find even more discoveries.
01:24I cannot wait to see what they do with this.
