00:00Over 2 billion in bootleg cigarettes went up in smoke in Porac, Pampanga with BIR head honcho, Romeo Lumagi

00:14And as our Christian Bascones reports, this blaze-setting event to destroy smuggled merchandise in Central Luzon
00:21was also performed in 18 other regions nationwide to signify the BIR's serious intent to curb smuggling.
00:30Through thermal decomposition process with a gasifier machine, more than 2 billion pesos worth of smuggled cigarettes was burned at a waste management
00:38disposal facility in Porac, Pampanga. This activity was spearheaded by Bureau of Internal Revenue or BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagi, Jr.
00:44together with Porac local government officials. According to BIR, the total unpaid tax of these illicit cigarettes reached 6.4 billion pesos
00:52including penalties and surcharges. Tax evasion cases have already been filed against individuals behind these illegal shipments.
00:58The destruction was done simultaneously with 19 revenue regions in the entire country.
01:03This initiative aims to show the public how the agency religiously combats smuggling and other illegal activities.
