‘Synthesis’ is an exhibition involving electronic music alongside digital and abstract art, organised and curated by two final year Glasgow School of Art Painting and Printmaking students. This one night only event sets out to let art and music be seen as equals, celebrating their ability to work together. We are encouraging viewers to come along, have a drink, listen to live music, look at some art and stay a while in a unique and exciting setting.

00:00So I'm Marnie White, I'm one of the curators of Synthesis and we're currently in French
00:25Street Studios where Synthesis is going on right now.
00:28It's a one night only event which is collaborating music and art and it's just a, we've created
00:34an environment where art and music are held as one and it's an immersive experience for
00:38both us and the viewers.
00:41We are exhibiting 41 artists and 6 DJs, each artist varies from sculpture to painting to
00:49projection, so it's a mixture of all.
00:51So I hope that everyone comes in, enjoys themselves, obviously, hopefully a little bit of dance
00:56but I hope they kind of walk around and experience, immerse in the art and the music, see what
01:01happens and yeah, hopefully a little bit of dancing at the end.
01:05I'm Ayla Nicholson and I'm a painting and printmaking student at the Glasgow School
01:08of Art.
01:09It's a collaboration with me and my friend Marnie.
01:11We just thought our work would work quite well together so we wanted to create a show
01:15with like-minded people and in a space where art and music was combined.
01:19A really big space which is great because it allowed us to include more people, it's
01:24pretty central and it was also feasible for us to be able to work in this space and we
01:29also just like the feel of this space, it's somewhere we've worked before.
01:32It's a great space to exhibit in because of the brick and the woods and it's just a really
01:36interesting place to display art.
01:39I think it's somewhere where people who like music can see a bit of art and people who
01:43like art can see a bit of music.
01:44It's somewhere where we can combine the two and it's stress-free and it's enjoyable for
01:48everyone and yeah, I think the main aim is just that we want everyone to have a nice
01:52time.
01:53We picked the DJs based off of tracks that they'd sent us and we enjoyed the tracks and
01:57I think as well as art it's just a place that you can be free and enjoy it and have a bit
02:03of fun with it so we're happy for them to do their thing, we picked them because we
02:06think they're good.
02:07We're enjoying all types of music, I think right now everyone's just having a little
02:10bit of a bop and that's fine.
02:12I'm Rufus, I'm doing a live set where I've got a couple of synthesizers and the decks,
02:18I've got like a sample is almost, so yeah, a short little live set, it should be fun.
02:25My set is going to be fairly experimental, it's something quite unusual which you know
02:31in an open exhibition space I think suits it quite well, yeah it's not something I would
02:37normally do so it's a good chance for me to kind of expand.
02:41I just hope for everyone to enjoy the space, enjoy the exhibition, enjoy the music, you
02:47know it's really nice to see everyone together, chatting away, having a nice time.
02:52So I'm Eloise Hodgkinson, I'm studying at Glasgow School of Art, I'm doing communications
02:57and I'm in my fourth year now.
02:58It means a lot to get involved in things like this, I really like working with visual and
03:02sound as well so my piece is an animation piece, it's stop motion, so it's about a minute
03:08long and it's done just frame by frame, hand drawn, so working with sound as well, working
03:14with the audio piece and yeah, overall it's about 720 frames so it's taken me a long time
03:20to complete the piece and it's nice to get it seen somewhere alongside so many great
03:25artists as well.
03:26This piece that I've done as well, it's for Alistair Gray's 90th birthday so it's going
03:31to be shown there tomorrow night as well so it's quite an exciting opportunity to be involved
03:35with that as well with the Alistair Gray Archive.
03:37It's definitely nice to be involved in a group show for sure because everyone's got such
03:40great, there's such a great range of work here, it's nice to see all different things
03:45being put together as well as the DJs and things like that so it's nice to see photography
03:50and prints and then my moving image work as well, it's lovely to see everything come together
03:54like that.
03:55My name is Lucy and I'm a DJ, it's quite a unique experience to do it in an exhibition,
04:01I'm also an art student and I also have work shown here so it's kind of a bit of a, it's
04:06quite surreal, not only just to show, well I've shown work obviously everywhere but to
04:10play for an exhibition and play to a bigger crowd.
04:13This is the biggest crowd that I've actually played in front of and it's almost like a
04:17little bit like, ah, jarring but it's really exciting and I'm very proud of myself and
04:21yeah, and I hope to do it much more again in the future.
04:24It's such a unique idea and it's curated really well and Marnie and Isla have honestly done
04:31such an amazing job curating everybody's work and you've got to give it to them, it's honestly
04:36five stars.
