00:00Oh, yeah, that's the worst one we've never gone around the homeowner. Look at the bottom. Look at this. Oh my gosh
00:06It's literally suspended. You tell me that I'm like, oh, I don't know why you'd involve me in this because I need someone to take
00:12the ball with me
00:30Hey, how's it going? Nice to meet you guys. Yeah, good to meet you
00:33You've traveled such a long way all the way from Lincoln, Nebraska. We've never done this before
00:38We've never gone around the homeowner to talk about their house
00:42I'm here representing me and my four other siblings to get some help from Ben and Aaron to help my parents fix their house
00:49So what's up?
00:50My parents they bought a house in Texas and that was gonna be their forever home
00:55But it was just too rural for them. They sold the house. They bought a house here
00:59Okay, you know a little fixer-upper. How much fixing are we talking about?
01:05My parents bought a dump and they think you know, it's a gem. Is this an intervention?
01:10Yes, so I need you guys help to take what they think is a gem and actually turn it into something
01:16You need us to undump a fire. Yes undump a fire the place. The current plan is to transition from you know
01:23Texas and move to their forever home here in Laurel. Okay, they've done maybe
01:281% of okay, you know what needs to be done
01:31My parents are over their heads and they have so much work to do and I don't think they can do the work themselves
01:36So that's the color of the outside of the house. My mom does not like the color. Yeah, it's oh
01:42Yeah, that's that that's the worst one. And that's the room. They've actually done renovation on
01:49It is very beautiful, yes, so keeping it two bedrooms one bath, they're not planning on y'all visiting very much
01:56Do you have any idea if they have a budget in mind? I think the budget's $100,000. Okay. Yep. Cool
02:01So they don't know you're here. No, they have no idea. I'm here. Okay, we couldn't do all of it for sure
02:07But we could definitely get them
02:09Way closer to the finish line. Yeah for a hundred thousand. Are you going to tell your parents and tell them?
02:16Yes, you guys don't have to show me like hey
02:19We're doing your house
02:21Surprise, yeah, so you talk to them and then we'll do a walk-through with them. Okay, if they're okay with that
02:26I'll make sure they're okay. Okay. Yeah, I
02:33Don't know why our kids are doubting us we've done this before they've seen the houses we've done before
02:38I appreciate that well thought of us and reached out, but I think I could do this by myself
02:44Let's not be too hasty
02:47I don't know. Are they gonna be able to take this and turn it into something wonderful?
03:02Good I don't know why I didn't expect to see yeah, these are my parents
03:09How are we
03:11We're well, yeah, so how we feelin excited to see what you can maybe do for us
03:17Yeah, maybe maybe maybe I hope they don't tell us that all of our decisions so far have been wrong
03:24It's kind of in the blind leading the blind between her and I
03:31So welcome to what will calls our dump
03:35He said it was love. Yes all from the heart, you know, who did y'all buy it from?
03:39We bought it from the next-door neighbor. I love the slower pace of life in Laurel
03:43You can go downtown and everybody's your friend. We're tired of being in Texas. Laurel is just right which feels just right
03:50So this house in town is known as the Campbell house. This is a two-bedroom one-bath house
03:58It's 1,300 square feet. We're looking for a craftsman. We were looking for a bungalow tall ceilings historic features
04:05You know not the way they build houses today and we were looking primarily for a front porch
04:09This is the one we wanted and this is the one we got you want to spend about a hundred thousand about a hundred thousand
04:14Thousand in the budget our plan was to do the whole thing ourselves
04:17It was a five-year plan. We're eight hours drive away and my boss is getting tired of me taking PTO
04:24We renovated our last house. It turned out exactly the way we wanted it, but I did tell myself I would never do it again
04:30And here we are. It's amazing what the mind will let you forget
04:35Look at that great window. This house isn't a dump. Yeah, I've never seen it done this way. We do love the windows
04:41You got a fireplace. Would you like it to work? Yeah, we'd like that to work could do maybe some gas logs in there
04:48I didn't pay attention to a chimney
04:51There used to be two used to be two. They took the one down when they put the new roof on
04:55What do we like about the house? I love the floors. Okay, but we don't like the color
05:01Yeah, if you're gonna do the heart pun you gotta go clear absolutely, do you love color?
05:07I like a pop of color love wallpaper. I'm not a fan of the blue. How do you feel about spicy cinnamony?
05:12When you tell me that I'm like, ooh, but I might see it and I might love it
05:17I guess I'm looking for the house to all blend
05:19Yeah, so maybe there's an opportunity to have all the colors in the whole house represented somewhere in the house in a pattern
05:25That would be great. I'd love that. This is the actual intervention
05:29You gotta want to change
05:32Before you can actually change. All right, y'all wanna hear some ideas? Yeah, I do. Okay, Kathy. Sure
05:39All right, we're getting there. We're getting there mom. Well, we'd have to take the acoustic tile down
05:43Yes, cuz it looks like it is sagging in the center
05:46Yeah, I'm very curious what's under all this acoustic tile if it's the same as in the dining room. It's wood
05:51I'll probably paint it something neutral. I like that. So you want a kitchen that's open to the rest of the house
05:58Yes that
05:59All the way through. Yeah, you could open up this wall in the dining room between the kitchen and dining room
06:04Let's see this kitchen a case opening would be historically appropriate for this house. So you have a little separation and
06:12Architecture there, right? That's what I want. Uh-huh. What is this?
06:16It's original the house. It used to have a closet with the HVAC air handler unit in it
06:21Our plan was to make it a walk-in pantry. So this is part of the HVAC. It was that's nothing in there anymore
06:27See, I like it. I want to tear it out. Yeah, you like
06:31I like the angle. It's quirky. It's different. Did you have a dream kitchen color in mind colors hard for me?
06:38Um, I don't know what I like till I see it. Okay, I said turquoise was your color
06:43Yeah, it is. It is absolutely without a doubt. I love a colorful kitchen. Yes more teal more blue green than green
06:49Okay, she loves the color of that floor that when we uncovered that floor. That's pretty green. I can't
06:55It's very
06:58See a blue I like things done my way I have a vision in my head and as much as I can relay that to
07:07somebody else there's always
07:08room for interpretation
07:10Believe me. How do we feel about these floors?
07:13I was incredibly happy when I saw that the pine floors came in here and
07:17Then I got depressed when I saw that it's not in the best of shape in here wonder what you guys would do
07:22How would you build a kitchen? I am thinking about that on the fly. So
07:27You always try to start with where's the sink go?
07:29If you had a run of cabinets against this wall and your sink under the window
07:34Mm-hmm, and you could open up a cased opening here your range and your hood vent built in on this wall here
07:40Right all new cabinetry built in here around the rain. So instead of uppers. What about open shelving?
07:47You like it, I love it. I have pretty dishes
07:50Okay, open shelving open shelving and then drawers on the bottom. Yes, that is that is the way what is instead of wallpaper?
07:58There was like a backsplash tile that felt like a wallpaper
08:02That would work that could be the color
08:05We see throughout the house inside in and that would work that would work and then you could have a peninsula
08:10Oh
08:11That comes out into the case opening here
08:13So you could have barstool seating on the back and give you more counter space
08:17We're always trying to add counter space in these old houses, right? We like the peninsula
08:22We don't want the seating. All right, we want big forget it. We hate seating
08:29Are we married to a stone countertop? I like what you're black fridge has to go here then and then cabinetry
08:36Around it won't you have a door that looks like a cabinet door with a secret pantry inside?
08:41I love that inside the pantry on one wall lots of cabinet storage
08:46Handed a cream color and quartz countertops and then more storage on the other side and then a really rich green color on the walls
08:54That would be awesome. I would trade that for that you would trade the
08:59HVAC angle for a secret pantry. Mm-hmm. We'll look at the bedroom. Yes bedroom
09:07Whoo, that is rough. I don't know what possessed me to think that it would only be one layer of wallpaper
09:13This house is an onion an onion. Yes
09:17Are you calling this house a dump? I'm not calling this house a dump. He's called it a rotten onion
09:23It's a dump
09:25Guys, it's dumb. There's no working bathroom. There's no kitchen. We can't live in it. That might be by it
09:31Because
09:33It had potential I thought the red was like a paint color it's a paper it came up
09:39I was like I can't do it. So in here
09:42We'll fix whatever's going on with the ceiling and just some paint. What about a real door on the back?
09:47Sure
09:47I'll even throw in a door you could spend five or ten years doing this wouldn't be better to spend eight or ten weeks and
09:53Be done. That would be yeah, it's not saying that you couldn't do it. No, I mean we could do this
09:57We're just speed it up. Mm-hmm. Sounds a lot better than me
10:00Do you want to see just a thought for the outside based on what we'll told me? Yeah
10:05Yeah, you've already done some work here. So you're halfway there. Yep. I've got a tile up. We've got towel on the floor
10:10I think we can just finish this ourselves. You can see the light at the end of this tunnel
10:14I
10:15Have a painting but you can feel free to veto anything about it because I didn't have a lot of information
10:21Well, that's good because I'm good at veto
10:23Let's talk about this Campbell house make this the Turner house if we can turn around
10:28Day after we closed we tore down all the windows
10:31We started opening up the porch because we wanted it to be open. It was really hot with the glass
10:34I'm sure glass dim porches are awful. Yeah
10:37This is a craftsman cottage mill workers and people lived on this street because all the houses are almost identical
10:43But this one does have a little bit of flair in those rafter tails. I like those
10:47Those are sweet yellow yellow not our favorite. You like turquoise. I love turquoise
10:52So the exterior I think we can be a little flexible with a color palette. Oh
10:57That is awesome. I love that. Good job. Well
11:02Is that a red door that's a red door do you like red I like red he likes red
11:07So this would involve scraping the paint. We would also want to add new porch lighting porch decking needs some help
11:14There'll be a lot of rot repair. Yeah, we plan to spend a lot of time on that porch landscaping needs a ton of work
11:19Oh, that'll be nice. Yeah, what's it cost?
11:21I think if we save 25 grand for the exterior and
11:25then
11:2775 for the interior that is a rough guess. Yeah
11:31While also trying to save as much as we can wherever we can
11:35Yeah, and we do the bathroom and in the other bed in the other bedroom. So, how do we feel will?
11:40What do you guys think you need some help?
11:42You
11:48It's hard to not be there and she can't let go
11:55You know you want it yeah, it used to be fun
11:57It's not fun anymore for William to see that we were struggling and reach out to help
12:04He's a good kid, I think we should do it I think we should I think we should do it
12:08I think we should all right. We're doing it. Okay, and now we've got a cool breeze the winds have changed the winds of change
12:14Yeah, the breeze is blowing
12:21This room
12:24Makes me
12:25Very stressed out. This is like the house of horrors in here
12:29Erin is that the dentist and I don't want her to miss out on demoing wallpaper. I grind my teeth in my sleep
12:38My crown is not
12:40Loving that see I used to grind my teeth and they said it was because I've drank too much coffee
12:45But here I am still drinking that coffee and who's grinding their teeth now you I hear it every single night
12:50Do we want to start on the kitchen wall? Let's do it. Okay. Yeah, don't be so excited
13:07This is maybe the easiest wall demo ever
13:10Well, the Turner's did half the wall already. That's true. So you only had to cut through one layer would you just cut it and push?
13:17It one two, three
13:24How's your teeth
13:27Yep. Hey, here's a win though. The floors run all the way through that is good
13:31So y'all left the wallpaper for me, huh? Yeah, let's go in here
13:37Good thing I'm wearing a hard hat
13:40Let's get real we gotta have a steam off. Yes, but it's hot and steamy enough
13:46We're gonna close all the windows shut the doors
13:48We're gonna do aerobics until it gets so humid that the wallpaper falls off
13:54We're this far away from it being hot enough for that. All right, y'all get a steamer
13:58Saggy ceiling the sag is because the ceiling joists have gotten weak
14:03So we're gonna put in some cross braces and we're basically done with demo. This is gonna go fast, maybe
14:12This house
14:14Doesn't have any sort of an entryway. Okay, you walk in you're in the living room
14:18Yeah, so I want to build a very specific hall tree
14:23Would it still be called a hall tree? I don't know. I don't know
14:26Would it still be called a hall tree? I don't know. It's gonna help define the entryway and function as a coat closet
14:31So here's what I'm thinking
14:33We'll have a square post in the back a decorative base on the bottom and then a shelf up top
14:38Then there'll be a turned column here
14:41We'll do hooks down the backside and then they'll be able to access it from both sides
14:46That really is something you could hang your hat on, you know
14:49Oh
14:53It's gonna be a sort of
14:55Victorian design all trees became really popular in the 19th century and they were large decorative
15:01I want this piece of furniture to feel like an heirloom piece
15:04Even though the house is a craftsman style house. This will feel like something they've had a long time
15:09We're good interior design. You want to have balance you want to have a mix of things going on in there?
15:19I
15:23Josh is gonna make the post in the back and an actual base
15:38All right, let's stand it up
15:40It's kind of big. Oh, it's kind of big eight feet is really high
15:44Mark and Kathy pretty tall people
15:47No
15:50I
15:50Tend to do this
15:52Every time I hang artwork I hang it at eye level you can take two feet off shrink it down
15:56So then we have a little bench seat to put your shoes on. I love it. So a hall tree and a bench
16:04Serendipitous still gonna be a statement piece. It is a statement
16:14All right, we got some solution opportunities in here guys, uh, where'd the ceiling go
16:19They really wanted that tongue-in-groove wood on the ceiling. I know and we're gonna patch it
16:24We tried so hard to save it, but it all busted up coming down. It's so brittle and gets old
16:29Really? It's more trouble than it's worth to try to save it and it messes up the budget
16:33We're just at a point where we need to do sheetrock and we're already gonna eat into contingency some because do you see the ceiling?
16:38Joyce
16:40It's cut and it's two by four. I guess whenever they were doing the HVAC in here
16:44They were just like we don't need that. It's not just in the diner
16:47It's in the kitchen and in the primary bedroom. So no wonder it was sagging
16:51Yeah, a tongue-in-groove ceiling is gonna be cool
16:54Anytime you can get one and that is what the Turner's really hoped for in the dining room
16:58But function matters more than form the juice just ain't worth the squeeze
17:04It's just a mess. All right, but there's one more thing to show y'all you find a wraparound porch. No, unfortunately
17:13Stop oh my gosh
17:17We
17:19Just have like a suspended chimney it's sitting kind of on the wall
17:24Well, at least I found it before it fell on somebody there was probably a wood stove in the kitchen
17:29Well, there's not anymore. Just the top hat of the chimney this left
17:33The bottom of the chimney is gone now. So this is a stack of bricks in the attic
17:39That's just resting on very little. No. Oh my gosh. Look at this. Oh my gosh. I see what you're seeing now
17:46It's like literally suspended they stacked up two by fours on this side to balance it
17:51This is all it's sitting on anytime. You're working on an old house that
17:56Has changed hands several times
17:57You don't know what kind of work has been done before and by who and if it was quality work or shoddy work
18:03Just this little outside row of brick is holding that whole thing up. Oh my gosh a stack of bricks is
18:10Extremely heavy slamming doors moving furniture. It could topple one way or the other
18:15It could easily fall through the ceiling and land on your head. They could kill you
18:19Here's the crazy thing when they put the new roof on it
18:22They took the chimney that was sticking through the roof out
18:26But left this part of the chimney all the weights coming down on this wall
18:29This probably explains why we have this weird sag in the floor. We got to get that thing out
18:34How much of the contingency is this gonna use to add all the joists bracing and take the chimney out?
18:40Maybe a couple thousand dollars seems like it's a little more than that. That's good
18:44Kathy and Mark bought this house with the intentions of doing it themselves. I love Mark and Kathy
18:48I don't think that this would have been a project for them
18:52This is not DIY material
18:54This is why you hire professionals before we tear anything else out of this house
18:58We are required by law to fix it. The chimney has to come down
19:03The ceiling joists have to be fixed
19:08Then she rocked
19:10This could be
19:21I've been looking at your artwork since I was a little child. That's great
19:25I just don't know anyone who's a more iconic
19:29Illustrator of children's literature so colorful. It's so whimsical
19:33I am fangirling because my childhood
19:37Smelled and tasted like waffles and syrup and it looked like
19:43illustrations by Mary Englebright
19:45She made things that people all around the world recognized and had in their homes. We have talked online a lot and
19:55I've been looking for a way to work together with her and I thought this is quirky. This is unexpected. This is colorful
20:02This is whimsical. That is Mary Englebright. This is
20:06Challenge I have now miss Kathy likes to do things herself and she likes things the way she likes them
20:13I understand that she really loves
20:16wallpaper and highly patterned tile and she was not afraid of quirk and
20:21Unexpected color and I think a patterned backsplash could really tickle her. That's yeah, perfect
20:28Yeah, can you make me a towel? That's gonna make her happy and it's gonna make me happy and it's gonna make you happy
20:35Yeah, what kind of thing does she want to see she likes turquoise
20:39Oh, I do a lot of cherries and red. I think is so great with turquoise
20:45It makes us in a kitchen. Mm-hmm, you know and maybe some of the black and white checks
20:50That's so you yeah, it is
20:53difficult to take
20:55Someone's very specific wishes and try to interpret them in a visual way because what I say is blue
21:02Some might say is green
21:04Love the scallops. Yeah, I think that'll make it a little quirky. She might like that. It's the whimsy
21:11The black around the frame. I think she'll be happy with she said she's not afraid to use black
21:15So it's got the red the turquoise this could all be neutral back here. She likes all those colors
21:20Yeah, I want to match the whole house to the towel. No pressure. No, you know what you're doing and I'll be great
21:35To do the gas logs, it can't be in the center. It's got to be one side of the other
21:40Oh, they want a gas range and they want gas logs
21:45We got to have a gas line all the pipes underneath are old and dilapidated
21:49So we're just gonna start over and run them all new that way they will have any problems with anything. They'll be a hundred percent new
21:54Okay
21:56So, um, who's going under?
21:58Well
22:00Well, we're gonna flip a quarter or something I guess I don't think that'll fit me that's all that's a 2x large
22:06We made sure it would fit you now. I've never been real good at squeezing into tight spots
22:11This is as hot as it gets in, Mississippi. It is hard to think about a fireplace today
22:17It's real hard. It is real hard, but you don't know it's even harder than that
22:21You climb under this house in the magic suit so that you can run a gas line for a fireplace
22:28That's just too much. But in the winter, it's gonna be worth it. They're gonna love that
22:36Pine has the hard part. He's having to climb under so we're gonna drill all the holes from up top
22:53How far can I go toward the front door
22:58There
23:00Soon as he gets there, he'll let me know he ain't made it. It's bad under there cuz he's quick
23:07But uh, this is slow I looked under there and it's skinny skinny I'll think I would have made it
23:12I know I wouldn't have he's over 10 inches 11 inches. All right, we're gonna make it happen
23:18We had to have him under there to tell us how far over and back that we could drill the holes
23:24I'm
23:29Dusting him out. He said I can't have him quit. I'll make me quit on that being a man. It's pine quits. I quit
23:35The hole for the gas logs is over to one side
23:39But we got it all the way back against the back wall of the firebox
23:43So that when we install that we can pull those logs back in our back as far. Yeah, it's a shallow firebox
23:49So I have concerns
23:52Beautiful
23:54I'm stressing out about the colors of the exterior
23:57For a couple of reasons
23:59I just want a second opinion on the paint color that I chose for the house because when I showed her the watercolor
24:04She loved it. I just
24:06Need to see it in true daylight. She likes to have control over the design process. It's very important to her
24:12She said she loves certain shades of green
24:15But not darker shades of green and she really prefers blue but not royal
24:21But she really likes turquoise, but a more blue turquoise. Oh
24:26All right, and not a sky blue so overwhelming. So I'm a little
24:31concerned I
24:33Chose a color that I felt was right, but then the more I think about it. I'm second-guessing it
24:37I'm torn between three different swatches that I've only seen on paint strips. This is lighter
24:41This is greener and this is bluer but darker
24:45I don't know why you've involved me in this because I need someone to take the fall with me. Okay. I know I'm sorry
24:56This is just an immense amount of pressure it's part of life. Um, okay. Let's try the one we know we're gonna hate
25:02Yeah, that feels
25:04Wildly more green so dark. This is very different. Oh, yeah on swatch cards
25:11They were much closer. This is why we're unsure. We've got to paint it on the house last one
25:16Look how dark this thing. This is the one I was sure of
25:22Wwk D what would Kathy do?
25:29So you have to feel good about all these colors, but the top one has a nice
25:33Complimentary richness that the other two don't because when that's in full Sun, it's gonna look like this. That's right. It always gets lighter
25:40Yep, the middle one goes Christmas. It does go very Christmas once it dried
25:44The bottom one is gonna look straight-up gray and we don't want gray top color final answer should trust my gut
25:52There's a whole book about this that your first instinct is usually the right one. Okay, I feel better
25:57She's gonna love it
26:08Same everything in the same way with the top good
26:13There's no uppers except for in the pantry, this is it there's floating shelves over here
26:18That is what she wanted for real for real. I want to see this thing
26:22Okay
26:27Y'all it is so close to the ceiling
26:32Wow, okay now I understand so this is the fridge it'll be inset into here in the pantry room
26:39Will the fridge have a wall around I'll just go around that fridge right over plywood
26:43Okay, look like a cabinet great now. I'm in the pantry coming out of the pantry
26:49I think we're being really clever with this pantry walkthrough secret door thing
26:53I think it's gonna be not just a cool thing, but an incredibly functional thing
26:58This kitchen is going to be so much more than they could ever dream of
27:05This little jog right here is so satisfying the devil's in the details
27:10And this is the devil that would really mess me up if I made cabinets. No, it's just a little turn there
27:18There's floating shelves over here
27:20So so much better this is the part where the rubber meets the road now anybody would love this setup if we're gonna make a
27:26Mistake this is where it's gonna happen in the colors and finishes and all that. I don't want any unforced errors
27:31I don't want the unforced error to be Kathy saying I told y'all so I should have done this myself
27:51How's the house going things are going okay according to plan
27:57Sure, this is like phase two of the secret mission
28:00Okay, because your parents now know that we're working on the house, but they don't know that you're in here building
28:05Okay, you're the secret agent. Oh, I like that. I like that
28:08Yeah, if your parents are gonna live their best life in this house, they're gonna want to do some front porch
28:15Yeah, of course, I mean like everyone wants to so here's what I've got in mind for the front porch
28:20We want to add some lattice work
28:23Okay
28:23this lattice work will
28:25Afford them a little bit of privacy a little bit of shade and a lot of architectural flair a diamond pattern here
28:33Interesting that's very unique. I think they'll love that a lot
28:35And this is Spanish cedar will and I are kind of tag-teaming everything for only four of these
28:41He's cutting the pieces for the frame and then I'm taking what he's cutting and cutting it on the bandsaw making our lattice strips
28:49From there. I'm gonna make some smaller pieces while he's cutting our miters
28:58Okay, we're not like weaving these together just line it up with those marks
29:03Okay, I see will works and finance and cryptocurrency
29:07Which I don't know what that is, but I think that this is similar
29:12Let's set our diamonds in there. Now. These are simple straight cuts that when you assemble them the right way
29:20It creates something beautiful art. I think it's gonna look beautiful. She'll tell everybody my son will build this
29:38I
29:39Paint is helping this house so much. Oh, man. I love the color with Joe's it is
29:45It's a great dark. It is not
29:50It's like a medium lightish blue green, I don't care what Kathy calls the color I just wanted to love it
29:58I
30:04Want you to look at this bedroom color cuz I'm just really second-guessing I love it, but more importantly I
30:10Felt really sure that Kathy would like this color. This was the living room. Mm-hmm. She hated that color
30:19It's the exact same color it's not the same it absolutely is this lanes purple that is the exact same color
30:26This is a green blue. I don't know. They do look kind of the same. Are they the same?
30:30They look like the same to me with the information
30:33I've been given I've made the best choice that I can hey do the best you can don't worry about it
30:38Don't worry about four is a little splotchy. This is spliced in old heart pine
30:44It's not like the heart pine in the rest of the house. Do we blend it with a stain or do we go clear everywhere?
30:51Mm-hmm. So I'm gonna test some stains. Here's clear. Please look good. I
30:58Mean you definitely can tell sweet wood. Okay, it looks like clear coat
31:04One more color. Oh
31:06That's very dark, but it doesn't blend it a little bit closer
31:11It kind of closes the gap between them. It lessens the divide
31:16I just hate to put a color on the entire floor
31:20Just for this one little section of kitchen. I think we stick with clear. Look how good it looks right there
31:26Just stick with your gut when all else fails a good rug. Yes
31:32Today is my favorite type of countertop day. I like them too. They look so good. They look beautiful
31:37She specifically wanted butcher block, but no
31:40Bar top overhang I needed some natural wood in that kitchen. It's so nice to add some warmth in a craftsman house
31:55Love it
31:57That lattice looks so good. It adds more craftsman elements that it needed
32:02They bought this house because they want it to feel like a craftsman, but they also like kind of coastal colors. We got a
32:08What's the difference here typically on a craftsman style house
32:11The lattice would have been painted and they would have saved the natural wood colors for the door
32:15But because we don't have a natural wood door. This is an opportunity to showcase some natural wood
32:26You couldn't fit a hair between those gaps it is pretty tight
32:38Oh, they're here what's here they are here
32:44The real thing
32:46Mary Englebright style is
32:48Here, I've had one sample tile that I could color match everything to but to see the full pattern layout is so exciting
32:55It's an interesting tile. It is it creates a star in the middle. I like the colors you pick that intentionally
33:03And then I matched it's gonna look nice front door color, too
33:08There you go. See very nice
33:11Give you one even farther than that and we got that diamond pattern out there and the lattice work. It's true
33:17Where will the pattern start? What is your plan? We're going to try to get this diamond right dead center, maybe I love it
33:25Because miss Kathy really loves wallpaper and wanted to do that and this is gonna act almost like wallpaper
33:31You do realize this Friday though, right?
33:34This is like a Wednesday job
33:36When I start something like this and it's Friday, you know me I'm gonna work through the weekends
33:41I'm through with it starting on a Friday means you're gonna be working right Saturday
33:45Maybe Sunday, which don't leave a whole lot of time for wind therapy. It does not David has
33:51three modes of transportation a
33:54worktruck a
33:55Convertible and a motorcycle on the weekends. He needs that wind therapy
34:01I got a brand new chance at life
34:05You know just where to start
34:11I found a piece of paradise
34:20Most important thing about being a good apprentice is holding the line, right?
34:24I'm he's the flashlight man
34:27More your qualifications. No
34:29You've obviously never held a flashlight miss showing holding the flashlight on the correct thing is a learned skill
34:36You went to the Wayne Napier school of flash lighting. I said to hold it on the alternator
34:42I thought that was the alternator daddy. Oh good gravy. How's this? Yeah, then I was right gas log companies
34:49Y'all need to do a better job of mapping out what you do with the gas lock
34:54No pictures. You got three plumbers trying to figure it out
34:58You didn't play with Lincoln logs growing up and it's showing
35:07I feel like the whole house is done. Like this is the final touches. We can start moving furniture in
35:18This house is a craftsman but the colors that she loves lean
35:22Coastal and so this has been all about us taking those colors that she loves and working it into this craftsman style
35:28Which has a lot of earth tomes and spice colors that balance of cool and warmth is so good
35:35All of that's represented in the tile that Mary made
35:40Unreal
35:41It feels very much like the wallpaper wish that Kathy had for the house
35:45It feels so textured and rich in the kitchen then built a hall tree
35:51Which is nice because it creates a little separation for the entry and it's a nice place to hang a jacket
35:56But the spicy color of mahogany feels so right in a craftsman house
36:00Miss Kathy has her mother's hutch her mother passed pretty recently and this piece is really important to her
36:07I love it in the pantry. It's unexpected and it makes sense there
36:12I hope what we've done is
36:14Taken the stress off of them and what they had planned to do for this house so they can just enjoy it
36:19Well, well, you'll be happy. No, it's not a dump anymore. Welcome to the Turner house
36:40That's amazing
36:42Better than I imagined it really? Yeah
36:45Wow, it does not look like the same house
36:50Yes, I know you like these more coastal colors so finding that
36:56Right balance of it's a little bit blue. It's a little bit green. Oh my god. It looks so cozy
37:01It looks so welcoming not a dump anymore. That's
37:05My favorite thing is the piece that been built. I didn't build that
37:11Will
37:15Will help me build that I think you have a new career
37:18It looks like it's always been there tons of landscaping, right
37:24Totally great any rot repair was done a new light and ceiling fan on the front porch
37:30Yeah, what do you think about that front door?
37:33Beautiful spicy. Do you want to go see the inside?
37:48Oh
37:50The color is awesome. It's a craftsman kind of honey. I love it. Oh my gosh this room looks so much bigger
37:58I know it's crazy. We really leaned into the asymmetry. Yes, but it works. It does. I'm gonna take my coat off
38:10Oh my god, you built that been didn't you know, oh this this whole thing
38:16Solid mahogany
38:21We were trying to do something that would feel like it gives you a little foyer
38:25It's a good spot to sit and put shoes on. It's gorgeous. I love everything Wow. Nice job
38:33And the ceiling is not what was there yeah, it's not sagging either. No, it's not
38:39Oh look at the fireplace, oh my gosh when it's the coldest, right?
38:45It's so nice and your floors. Oh
38:48Oh, there's such a better color. Well, it's just clear. We stripped the old stain off. It's gorgeous
38:56Come see the dining room the dining room. Oh, look at this and this is your spiciness on the ceiling
39:03It's beautiful. This is the very intimate cozy room in the heart of the house
39:07I love it. And before there was tongue-and-groove wood up there, which I know you were hopeful to keep but we found so many problems
39:14Yeah, Joyce were wrong. Everything was wrong. There was a chimney stack and your attic barely propped up
39:21It's gone now. It won't fall on you. Okay. Thank you. Anyway, that's exciting, but I really need you to see the kitchen
39:27Okay
39:36Kathy
39:46That's a Mary Englebright, yes
39:48We have a story for you. Stop. Wait, why do you why do you know that? No because we met Adam
39:55He was talking about how Mary Englebright wanted to know where he
39:58Manufactured his tile and they're putting tile in one of the houses. They're working in right now
40:06It's oh my god, it's gorgeous, you know, Mary Englebright always does this like checkerboard
40:12And your front walkway is checkerboard. Yeah, I want you to believe that I did this on purpose
40:18But I didn't it just makes me happy. I love it
40:21It is perfect, you know because we talked about wallpaper and this is so much better and the vent hoods and the open shelving
40:28All the colors in the house really come from the towel
40:33There are some pieces that have been patched in its character, it's yeah, the house is a hundred years old
40:38It has to show some you specifically wanted butcher. Well, beautiful
40:43This is red oak made in Laurel countertop main law made just a few blocks right down this road. It's perfect
40:50The angle is gone and it's uh-huh. Yeah, and I wanted to keep that and this is so much better
40:55You nailed this. Oh, yeah, I cannot believe what I'm looking at and you totally forgot about the secret pantry
41:02Oh my gosh
41:20Oh
41:23Look at that
41:25You have no idea how important this is to me
41:30Thank you. So I knew it was your mom
41:34Yeah, it was in my house growing up. Oh
41:37My god, thank you so much. She would be so
41:41Excited this pantry is more than a pantry. It should feel like a really special. Yes, it's pretty secret. I need
41:48My secret it's pretty secret back here
41:51It's beautiful. You guys absolutely nailed it back here. I think there's the best pantry we've ever done. Well, thank you so much
41:59I want you to come see your bedroom made a bold choice in there. Okay
42:03I
42:10Love it you do I do
42:13You hated the living room color
42:16It's not no, this is what a bedroom should be feels very cozy in here. I love it. It's a very relaxing rain. Yes
42:25Well, well, how'd we do
42:28Expectations were here you guys went way in above
42:30I mean it went from the dump to something that I couldn't even imagine I knew that you had this
42:35Idea in your mind's eye. I didn't want to mess it up. You didn't thank you for trusting us to do it
42:41Thank you for putting up with us. We could have never done this. Well, you did do something you demoed it for us
42:46Yeah, and then you gave us 100 grand to finish the project even with those joist repairs and the chimney removal
42:53We were able to save in some other places and keep the budget at $100,000 for the renovation
42:58It looks like more than a hundred thousand. I think mm-hmm. It's a perfect house to start our next chapter in low
