Transition to zero-emission mobility: The EU’s plan to save Europe's car industry

In a new action plan to boost Europe's car industry, the European Commission pledged to support EV battery manufacturing, one of five flagship initiatives. Brussels also gave more flexibility for meeting this year’s CO₂ targets.

00:00Brussels is launching an action plan to help the European automotive sector.
00:06According to the European Commission, the industry is at a critical turning point.
00:11The Commission wants to ensure that the batteries used by car manufacturers are made in Europe.
00:16They will make available 1.8 billion euros to strengthen the supply chain of raw materials for batteries.
00:24This will be in addition to the 3 billion euros that Brussels has already announced will be invested in batteries.
00:35Europe needs its own supply. That means producing them ourselves.
00:41And alongside finance, we are considering European content requirements for batteries and components that are sold here.
00:50The Clean Industrial Deal, presented by the Commission last week, also announced a new Critical Raw Materials Centre.
00:58So from 2026, it will offer automotive players access to lower-cost materials.
01:06The European Commission also aims to decarbonize the corporate car fleet, which accounts for 60% of new car registrations.
01:14They will present a legislative proposal this year.
01:18This is in addition to the plan announced on Monday by Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission's president,
01:24to give carmakers three more years to adapt to the CO2 emission standards for new cars.
