As the cyclone approaches, people across south-east Queensland are being urged to stay home, with more than 600 schools closed, public transport suspended, and elective surgeries cancelled. The Queensland Premier, David Crisafulli, delivered an update a short time ago.

00:00The latest on the four key challenges of this weather event, waves, wind, rainfall and flooding.
00:09What's critical for people to understand across the large scale that we're dealing with, it's
00:15a large area and a large population and it's important that we update people on what is
00:19occurring.
00:20You will experience at least one of those key four challenges, waves, wind, rainfall
00:26and or flooding and it's important that Queenslanders prepare for that.
00:32I want to address the cyclone intensity, it remains as a category two and obviously we
00:39have seen the delay in the system heading towards the coast, literally in the last few
00:44minutes we've been updated that that could now push into Saturday morning, so if we just
00:48unpack where we've been, we overnight saw the system spin around on itself and then
00:55it has resumed its journey into the coast.
00:59So exactly where it will hit and when still remains unknown but all of the modelling continues
01:04to show it is coming towards the coast, albeit it has pushed into the early hours of Saturday
01:10morning just in the last few minutes.
01:13With every hour that approaches your window to get prepared closes but you still do have
01:18time and it's important if you are hearing these messages for the first time that you
01:22do take it seriously, as are we, but I assure you the preparations are in place and if you
01:27do your bit you will get through this.
01:29We are starting to see the first of the power outages following some gale force winds, that
01:33is predominantly where trees have started to knock over power lines, we'll see more
01:38of that and I want Queenslanders to know that we will get them reconnected as quickly as
01:43possible.
01:44Right now crews from Energex are actually reconnecting as quickly as they can while
01:48it is still safe to do so but we have pre-positioned a really large number of staff who are ready
01:55to assist and we even have those contractors who will be there to clear the trees so those
02:01electricity staff can go and reconnect power.
02:04We've done the preparation and we want Queenslanders to know that there will be no daylight between
02:08the response and the recovery.
02:10That's our commitment to you and we're asking Queenslanders to do the little things now
02:14in your preparations which will make a world of difference for that recovery.
