00:25Hi SPFam! We're asking about how to guide your kids when you're watching TV or consuming media.
00:31So my quick question is, what are your tips for parents when they're helping their kids navigate through media?
00:37One tip I would have is for the parents to be there with the young kids or kids of any age after they engage with a piece of media.
00:44For instance, you're watching a television show or a movie, after watching it,
00:49I feel like it's really important that the child has somebody to process the media content with.
00:56So how do you process? The parent can ask the child,
01:00So how do you feel about the movie? What was your favorite part of the story?
01:04Do you have a favorite character? Why is he your favorite?
01:08Or if the parent is ready, they could say,
01:11Is there a part where you got scared? What was the part where you had a problem or you didn't understand?
01:20Being with the child to process that media content and the media encounter
01:25helps both the parent and the child with media literacy as well.
01:29Because number one, the parent learns what it is the child thinks or feels
01:34and they can better address similar events in the future.
01:38And at the same time, the child gets a sense of my authority figure who's going to help me navigate my questions
01:45and perhaps some information that I need more clarity on.
01:49So that's one of my tips. The guardians or the parents should be there not just during but after the media encounter.
01:56That's it for today's video. Don't forget to give us a heart if you like this content.
