00:28so let's have a look at who's in my green room.
00:30First up, a renowned actor who's contributed
00:33to some of the most successful movies of all time,
00:36making over £10 billion at the box office.
00:39He has crucial roles in such films as Star Wars and Harry Potter,
00:43and he's just received the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship Award.
00:46It's the fabulous Warwick Davis!
00:48CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:53And along with Warwick, we've got another fabulous actor
00:57who you'll know from Broadchurch, Toxic Town,
01:00which is just a new big show and a hit on Netflix,
01:03and, of course, she was the first female Doctor Who,
01:06the exceptional Jodie Whittaker!
01:08CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:14Alongside Jodie, we also have the four-times BAFTA-winning star
01:17of This Country and the new series Am I Being Unreasonable?
01:21She's the queen of the Cotswolds,
01:23it's the always hilarious Daisy May Cooper!
01:25CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:30And, if that weren't enough, my next guest is a man of many talents.
01:34She's an actor, writer, rapper, and now director as well,
01:37the star of the brilliant series Top Boy,
01:40and my favourite ex-member of So Solid Crew, it's Ashley Walter!
01:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:46That's a good-looking man right there.
01:48That's a good-looking man right there.
01:51Class, and I'm really excited about the music we've got on tonight's show.
01:54It's from a rock duo that you might not have seen before,
01:56but you will be seeing a lot of them in the future, I'm sure.
01:58They've just been confirmed for this year's Glastonbury Festival.
02:01I'm a big fan, I'm sure you will be too.
02:03It's the fabulous Nova Twins!
02:05CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:09It was Pancake Day this week, I hope you celebrated Pancake Day.
02:12Did you enjoy the big day?
02:14However you celebrated, I hope it went better than it did for these people.
02:21Oh!
02:26Ooh!
02:33Oh!
02:41Shall we get on with the show?
02:43Let's do that, let's get my first guest out,
02:45it's Warwick Davis and Daisy May Cooper!
02:48CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
03:11Great to have you back here.
03:13So, I don't know how many people saw Bastards this year,
03:15but what was a genuinely lovely moment
03:17was seeing you receive your...
03:19What's it called, an Honorary Award? Fellowship.
03:21The Fellowship for the Baftas,
03:23which is a big, big thing for the Bafta organisation.
03:25Yeah, let's hear it. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
03:30Where were you when you found out
03:32that you were going to be honoured in that way?
03:34Well, I was on the toilet.
03:36Oh.
03:38I always check my email on the toilet,
03:40and there was an email from Bafta,
03:42which I read and got very excited.
03:44They were awarding me the Fellowship.
03:46But then I thought, hang on, it could be a scam.
03:48So I checked.
03:50It was indeed from a Bafta email address,
03:52and it was real.
03:54So I screamed with delight from the toilet.
03:56So my daughter thought,
03:58oh, he's relieved his constipation.
04:00I'm so sorry, I was going to try and do the same joke.
04:03I was wondering whether that was a regular occurrence in your house.
04:06So they heard you scream out on the loo,
04:08and then did you finish your business
04:10before you went and had a chat with them?
04:12I ran in before I'd finished the paperwork.
04:14LAUGHTER
04:17Well, it's a moment worth celebrating,
04:19and now even more memorable for you.
04:21Absolutely, yeah.
04:23But it was a lovely night. You've won several Baftas.
04:25Have you won four Baftas, I think? Yeah, I think so.
04:27Wow. Wow.
04:29APPLAUSE
04:31What were the highlights of receiving those Baftas for you?
04:35Seeing Tony from Hollyoaks in the smoking area.
04:38Oh, wow.
04:40Oh, my God, that was... I mean, he was terrified.
04:43Absolutely terrified.
04:45And we said, please, can we just get a selfie with you?
04:48And he said, yeah, just wait there, and then he never came back.
04:53Let me ask you about your career, Warwick,
04:55because what an amazing career it's been.
04:57Do you want to see my Bafta?
04:59Or shall we do that later?
05:01That's not a euphemism, by the way.
05:03I would love to see your Bafta. Would you?
05:05Have you brought it with you? I have.
05:07So you've been taking it out and about with you?
05:09No, like the World Cup, I hired an open-top bus
05:11and I've been going around the country.
05:13So you brought it in? Yes.
05:15Oh, here it is. OK.
05:17There's something on it as well. Oh!
05:19God, they're heavy, aren't they? They're very heavy.
05:21Have you got one, surely, for your chat?
05:23I have got a few, I must say. That's my sock.
05:25But mine are the lighter ones they gave me.
05:27What, like the plastic one you get, like...
05:29Yes, thank you. Thank you, Warwick.
05:31So this is my sock I wore on the night,
05:33and I use it to polish the Bafta.
05:35Again, that's not a euphemism.
05:37OK.
05:39I'm not going to ask what you use the other sock for,
05:41but it's a lovely...
05:43But it's really a lovely thing.
05:45Can I have a look at it up close? Yeah, but look behind.
05:47And where do you keep it at home?
05:49On the mantelpiece, so I have to get a ladder
05:51and I can pop it up there.
05:53So behind it's got... This is unique.
05:55The raised atom is the fellowship one.
05:57Wow. And do you get anything for it?
05:59Do you get the keys to Bafta, you get free membership,
06:01you get free drinks? I've got membership for a year,
06:03which is nice, yeah. Only for a year?!
06:05Or maybe it's a lifetime, I don't know.
06:07And I got a lot of things on that night.
06:09And I also got...
06:11No, don't read into that.
06:13Well, it was kind of hard not to.
06:15I don't know what else you meant by it.
06:17I also got a letter from the Prime Minister.
06:19Wow. Saying, well done.
06:21And invited me for a cup of tea. That's nice.
06:23So do I call his bluff and turn up? Yeah.
06:25LAUGHTER
06:27I mean, I suspect he needs all the help he can get right now,
06:29so I'm sure you'd be very welcome.
06:31Would I have to take this to prove who I am?
06:33Try and stop you from taking it, I think is the thing.
06:35No. Everyone's sick of me now,
06:37I just force the Bafta on them. Again, not a euphemism.
06:39LAUGHTER
06:41Do you carry yours? Have you taken yours
06:43on a sort of trip around with you, Daisy?
06:45No, but I put them sort of on the mantelpiece
06:47right by the front door,
06:49so whoever, like the Sky Man,
06:51sees it. Yeah.
06:53But you actually can't sell them.
06:55I have looked into it.
06:57LAUGHTER
06:59They throw them and sell them on eBay.
07:01But it's a lovely thing to have.
07:03It's a genuine honour, of course,
07:05from your peers in the industry,
07:07and, like, you fully deserve this,
07:09because, as I was just about to say,
07:11what an amazing career you've had.
07:13What age were you when you did your first acting job?
07:1511. 11. Yeah.
07:17And you don't come from an acting family,
07:19or your parents didn't have any connections in that world,
07:21so how did it come about? Not at all.
07:23I mean, the only kind of acting experience I had
07:25was at school, kind of trying to remain noticed
07:27in the playground, so being a bit larger than life,
07:29I had them, my friends, so I wouldn't get forgotten.
07:31Then Grandmother heard an advert on the radio
07:33from Lucasfilm,
07:35looking for short people to be in Star Wars,
07:37and she heard the word short person
07:39and Star Wars and thought of me straight away.
07:41LAUGHTER
07:43Had you seen the first film? The first film had come out,
07:45of course, I guess. Oh, yeah, I had, yeah.
07:47Did you like the first film? Massive fan, yeah.
07:49And so you hear there's an audition,
07:51and they just took you down and you got the part straight away?
07:53I just went into an office
07:55and met with a production assistant
07:57who said, do you like Star Wars?
07:59And I went, yeah, that's me at 11.
08:01She said, do you want to play an Ewok? I said, what's one of them?
08:03She said, well, go down to the wardrobe department
08:05and get measured up and you'll find out.
08:07Two weeks later I was on the set.
08:09Wow. On the set.
08:11And with people who, you know,
08:13such a great movie that you loved as a child anyway.
08:15Oh, yeah, my heroes there, you know,
08:17I didn't see them for the actors they were.
08:19They were just Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
08:21Yeah. And I would just wander up to them
08:23and say, hello, between takes,
08:25can I have a look at your blaster?
08:27Don't.
08:29And just chat to them.
08:31I didn't understand there was etiquette.
08:33You didn't do that.
08:35And did you know you were going to be in more Star Wars films
08:37when they finished that one, or did you think that might be it?
08:39Well, I finished that and I thought,
08:41well, this is it. You know, that was fun while it lasted.
08:43And then George Lucas
08:45came up with doing the Ewok movies.
08:47Oh, yeah. For TV in America.
08:49And then there was Labyrinth Next,
08:51which George was involved with
08:53with Jim Henson.
08:55And Beyond That Willow,
08:57which was the kind of seed of Willow
08:59was sown in about 1983.
09:01Because George said to my mum,
09:03I've got an idea for Warwick when he's a bit older.
09:05And it turned out in 1987
09:07it was Willow he was talking about.
09:09So he had you in mind. He must have liked what you did
09:11as an actor and he must have liked you as a person, I guess.
09:13Yeah, I guess so.
09:15He said, I think in my book he's written a foreword,
09:17he said, I had a lot of spunk.
09:19Which in American, I think,
09:21means a lot of energy.
09:23LAUGHTER
09:25What was so lovely about The Bachelor's World
09:27was the speech you made about your wife.
09:29Yeah. Who's sadly no longer with you.
09:31And that was a really
09:33lovely and very moving moment.
09:35And she clearly supported you.
09:37How did she help you in your acting, in your career?
09:39Well, when you go through your career
09:41as an actor, you kind of sometimes become
09:43a bit reluctant to do certain jobs.
09:45Thinking another one will come along
09:47that might be a bit better. But she would always say,
09:49no, get out there and do it.
09:51And I said, but I'll be away for six months.
09:53No, you should do this. I know it's going to be a good one.
09:55She was great at networking as well,
09:57always talking to producers and
09:59getting me to work in their next job
10:01and stuff like that. So, yeah, very supportive.
10:03And you need that in this business
10:05because it is difficult, you know.
10:07Got to have someone who's very understanding about
10:09you being away on occasions
10:11and working ridiculous hours as well.
10:13You mentioned there was one person,
10:15or you mentioned someone
10:17at the BAFTAs,
10:19Sponge. Yeah.
10:21And there was some speculation as to who Sponge is.
10:23Can you reveal who Sponge is?
10:25Well, initially, the Independent thought
10:27Sponge might be Ralph Fiennes.
10:29Don't know how they got that.
10:31So they thought you might now be in a relationship with Ralph Fiennes?
10:33Absolutely, yeah.
10:35But I can reveal, sticking with the
10:37Harry Potter theme, Sponge is indeed
10:39she who shall not be named.
10:41See what I did there? Yeah, yeah.
10:43Thank you. Sponge very much reminds me
10:45of Kerry. Really?
10:47Yeah. Some of the things she says, her accent.
10:49She'll probably be highly offended by this,
10:51but...
10:53No offence to you either.
10:55I was going to say.
10:57I don't think you've met before tonight, have you? No, we haven't.
10:59But you have a friend in common, of course,
11:01because Young Lenny, who co-stars with you
11:03in your series at the moment,
11:05you've been in touch with him. Yeah, he's terrific, yeah.
11:07In contact with him as well. He's a really gifted
11:09young actor for you. All right, all right.
11:11LAUGHTER
11:13It's a great show. So you're back
11:15with a new series of Am I Being Unreasonable?
11:17The first series I loved, and the first series
11:19ended on such a cliffhanger moment,
11:21and now it's spun, it's become even
11:23wilder, this show. I mean, it's a...
11:25And you write it as well, or co-write it? Yeah.
11:27Co-write it with my best mate,
11:29Celine, who plays Nutcase Jen.
11:31And, yeah, I mean,
11:33it's a bit... I mean, it's taken us
11:35two years to kind of
11:37try and get, you know, all the twists
11:39and turns, and, I mean,
11:41finally we've got there, but, I mean, it's been
11:43a long bloody time. Yeah.
11:45And also, I had, you know,
11:47I ended up, you know, having my son
11:49seven weeks early, in the middle of filming.
11:51Yeah, so you'd started filming, you were pregnant.
11:53Yeah. And then your son comes early,
11:55so how does that affect doing the job?
11:57Oh, it fucks it.
11:59LAUGHTER
12:01But do you know what? I mean, it was so...
12:03It was really stressful, but it was
12:05great, because we got to look at the edit
12:07and went, oh, well, that doesn't work, that doesn't work.
12:09You know, baby, having a baby, great excuse.
12:11We'll just re-film these bits.
12:13And you changed a lot, though. You changed physically,
12:15cos you lost loads of weight in between the early days of filming.
12:17Yeah, and I got my lips done,
12:19which is so...
12:21It's so funny, because
12:23it's meant to literally... Series 1
12:25is meant to literally sort of
12:27be 30 seconds
12:29before Series 2,
12:31and in that 30 seconds, I've
12:33lost about ten stone, I had my lips done.
12:35LAUGHTER
12:37Of course, and then this series features
12:39your brother in it as well. Oh.
12:41So Charlie, who was so good with you in this country
12:43as well, amazing, and yet he's
12:45quite different looking, he's got a different accent
12:47in this, I mean, you've set him quite a task.
12:49Oh, it's great, cos I'm the boss, cos it's my
12:51show, and they said, right,
12:53what do you want your brother to wear? And I said, well,
12:55definitely a mullet in a shell suit.
12:57LAUGHTER
12:59So we wanted to make him...
13:01First of all, he's meant to be German,
13:03so I can't do a German accent,
13:05but I can do a Dutch accent.
13:07He can't do a Dutch accent.
13:09And it wasn't until we were in the edit
13:11and he just kept slipping into
13:13West Country and then American,
13:15and I said, oh, my God, what are we going to do?
13:17So then we had to write that he's
13:19the character's not even Dutch,
13:21he's just West Country.
13:23Well, when I was watching it, I thought, first of all,
13:25I didn't realise it was him, then I realised it was him, and I thought,
13:27oh, he's doing a good Dutch accent, and then
13:29about seven words in, I thought, oh, no, he's not doing a good
13:31Dutch accent. And we decided
13:33to further humiliate your brother by showing the clip of him
13:35doing the Dutch accent. So there you go, this is from
13:37Am I Being Unreasonable? And I think it's
13:39the whole of the series available to watch, I think it is now, isn't it?
13:41Yeah, I think, yeah. OK, it's great fun.
13:43Have a look at this.
13:45The Pringles you have over here are crazy, no?
13:47I don't know whether it's the size
13:49of a tube or... I'm so sorry, can we just get on
13:51with this, please?
13:53Very good, good start.
13:57OK, now we're cooking.
13:59The four, still good?
14:01Uh-oh.
14:07What do you mean, uh-oh?
14:09Veskelis.
14:11OK, Veskelis is like a
14:13very well-known ancient demon
14:15in the Dutch folk world.
14:17What does that mean? Well, I'll show you, stupid.
14:21Stupid.
14:23I mean,
14:25it's a lot of fun to watch, even with the
14:27moving around of the action.
14:29Warwick, so what do you get,
14:31when kids come up to you, when kids recognise you,
14:33do they know you from your Star Wars work,
14:35do they know you from Harry Potter?
14:37It's mainly Harry Potter and
14:39Tenable.
14:41They come out from school
14:43and it's usually on the telly then.
14:45I mean, Tenable is not quite the same as Harry Potter,
14:47even though it's lovely to be in work,
14:49I'm sure. Absolutely, yeah.
14:51But yes, it's normally Harry Potter stuff.
14:53Definitely not Leprechaun, though.
14:55Oh, OK. So, Warwick's mentioned
14:57my favourite film series is in, which I was going to say for later
14:59in the show. He played a Leprechaun
15:01in a kind of supernatural horror films.
15:03Have you seen any of the Leprechaun films?
15:05No, I haven't. No, I will, though.
15:07They're amazing. Well, the first one was the first
15:09screen appearance of Jennifer Aniston.
15:11Oh, gosh. OK. And then, second one,
15:13was it the third one when you visit New York
15:15and it's called Leprechaun in Da Hood?
15:17The third one was actually Las Vegas.
15:19Leprechaun in Las Vegas,
15:21then Leprechaun in Da Hood, then Leprechaun
15:23before he's back in Da Hood. Yeah, cos we didn't have
15:25anywhere else to go, so we went back there again.
15:27And then Leprechaun... And we went to space.
15:29Leprechaun 5 is in space.
15:31And it's one of the greatest films
15:33I've seen in my life.
15:35Don't go away, because up next, we'll be joined by Ashley Walter.
15:37See you after the break.
15:39APPLAUSE
15:41CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
15:51Welcome back to the show.
15:53Let's get my next guest out here.
15:55He went from being one of the brightest stars of UK Garage,
15:57with so solid crew,
15:59to starring in Missing You, Bulletproof
16:01and the extraordinarily good Top Boy.
16:03It is Ashley Walters.
16:05CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
16:11Hello.
16:13Good to see you.
16:15Good to see you. Come on in.
16:17Have a seat.
16:21Ashley, it's great to have you back.
16:23I haven't interviewed you for years, have I?
16:25Interviewed you many, many years ago.
16:27Do you remember when we... Well, I know where we last saw each other.
16:29I know where we last... This makes me sound very hip.
16:31You were at a Stormzy concert.
16:33That's right, that's right. In the box.
16:35Yeah. Singing the lyrics more than anyone else.
16:37Yeah. Where's your clips of that?
16:39Yeah, say less. Eh?
16:41LAUGHTER
16:43You will know from me saying that
16:45that I was a huge fan of Top Boy,
16:47which was an extraordinary series.
16:49Is that out of the usual?
16:51Is it cos I'm an older, white gentleman,
16:53big, big fan of that show,
16:55did you get a lot from my demographic?
16:57Who mostly approached you about?
16:59You'd be surprised.
17:01I moved to Herne Bay four years ago,
17:03so I was from Kent, big up.
17:05But, yeah, I was down there,
17:07and there was this guy who was, like, nearly 70, I think,
17:09and was just watching me as I was walking down the beach.
17:11And I was like,
17:13you all right, mate?
17:15And he's like, I love your show.
17:17I really love your show.
17:19So everyone's watching it, man. That's sweet.
17:21Well, it was an amazing show.
17:23You just told us children approach you for Teddables,
17:25which is weird, but...
17:27Where's the most unusual place?
17:29Do you get... Cos you are so recognisable, of course.
17:31I don't understand it,
17:33but people recognise me while I'm driving.
17:35LAUGHTER
17:37I don't understand it, cos all they can see is my forehead
17:39above the back of it.
17:41But, Daisy, you live in the Cotswolds right now, don't you?
17:43Yeah.
17:45And, of course, that is where this country is kind of set,
17:47and that's where you come from.
17:49So you must be really... I'm sure they must love seeing you there,
17:51don't you? You must be kind of like the queen of the Cotswolds.
17:53Well, not really.
17:55I mean, people stop me because they remember me,
17:57you know, for pissing on the P mat in, you know, year five.
18:01That's about it.
18:03People that know me from school.
18:05School memories.
18:07Ashley, I think when it came to an end, of course,
18:09I know a lot of people are saying,
18:11you've got to do more, you've got to do more, you've got to do more,
18:13but I think quite rightly you're saying you won't do more of Top Boy,
18:15you won't go back to that character.
18:17Well, I'm dead.
18:19LAUGHTER
18:21What I mean was,
18:23when people say there should be more Top Boy,
18:25you say there shouldn't be.
18:27No, yeah, yeah, I know what you mean.
18:29No, it was time for me to move on, you know.
18:31I've been playing that character since I was 28.
18:33I'm now 42.
18:35I mean, it was time to stop being a boy and be a man, right?
18:37That's a big chunk of your life as well, to be doing that.
18:39Yeah, a big chunk.
18:41And it ended so brilliantly. I mean, it was kind of like a perfect ending, really.
18:43Yeah, it was beautiful.
18:45I mean, there was a lot of deliberation about how it would end.
18:47Yeah.
18:49But I was pretty adamant that, you know,
18:51these sort of people that do this sort of crime
18:53shouldn't win,
18:55in my story, anyway.
18:57Yeah, yeah.
18:59So, yeah, that was kind of a fatal ending, to be fair.
19:01You know, we were talking about Warwick starting when he was young,
19:03and you, before So Solid,
19:05you had done acting as a child as well, hadn't you, actually?
19:07Yeah, yeah, that's where I started.
19:09I started in Sylvia Young Theatre School
19:11when I was about six, seven years old.
19:13And I was doing a lot of, like,
19:15West End musicals at the time.
19:17So, yeah, I grew up on stage.
19:19Where were you living when you started acting?
19:21What part of London?
19:23Peckham.
19:25So, Peckham. So, were there many other kids?
19:27Were you trying to do that sort of thing as well,
19:29or was it unusual that you was on the stage?
19:31It was forbidden.
19:33It was more than unusual.
19:35I hid it for, like, many years,
19:37and I got caught out in secondary school,
19:39cos we used to bunk, right?
19:41Don't tell my mum.
19:43We used to jump on the bus and go to the West End.
19:45And a kid came back one lunchtime
19:47and was like,
19:49I saw you on a poster outside the London Palladium.
19:51And it was me.
19:53I was doing Oliver at the London Palladium,
19:55cos back then it was so frowned upon.
19:57So what, did you think that they would tease you,
19:59they would bully you?
20:01Yeah, that's what I thought.
20:03Yeah, I didn't want to get beat up.
20:05And now I'm going to talk to Ashley about a book
20:07that he's got coming out soon.
20:09I think it's not coming out for a while, is it?
20:11Is it May it's coming out? 29th of May, yeah.
20:13OK, so this is your autobiography. Yes.
20:15Always Winning, it's called.
20:17And it's a remarkable book.
20:19I was really struck by how honest you are in this book,
20:21because you've had some big ups and downs in your life, haven't you?
20:23Yeah, yeah. And you kind of go through it all here.
20:25I mean, let me ask you about where you are now,
20:27because you talk about that struggle there,
20:29because you were an alcoholic.
20:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:33I drank too much alcohol.
20:35And when did you give up?
20:37When did you break that condition?
20:39I am five years nearly sober now.
20:41Wow, that caught me.
20:43APPLAUSE
20:49So that means, not last time I saw you,
20:51you were still...
20:53Yeah, I had a good 15 years out there,
20:55you know, drinking, partying,
20:57and stuff like that.
20:59And, you know, it took its toll on me.
21:01You know, my body took a bit of a toll
21:03on my career,
21:05but more importantly, my family, you know,
21:07my wife, my kids and stuff.
21:09I mean, the day I decided to get help
21:11was the day my six-year-old daughter
21:13at the time, she was six at the time,
21:15knocked on my bedroom door and said
21:17that she didn't want me to live there anymore.
21:19Oh, man. And that was like, you know,
21:21it was hard to take it. It hit me in the heart.
21:23You know, but for a lot of people
21:25suffering with addiction,
21:27your rock bottom is your own rock bottom.
21:29It's like, you're only going to do it in your own time.
21:31No-one can tell you when to do it.
21:33And for me, that was it, you know,
21:35looking at my daughter and realising
21:37that I was damaging her, maybe in the same way
21:39that I'd already damaged my older children.
21:41And I just wanted to change.
21:43So, you know, the next day,
21:45I did. Literally, the next day,
21:47I stopped drinking. I stopped drinking,
21:49I stopped smoking, you know.
21:51And I think in the black community
21:53as well, it's pretty taboo to talk about
21:55those things, and I was quite adamant
21:57that I should speak about it, because
21:59it may inspire other people to be a bit more
22:01honest about it with themselves
22:03and maybe get the help they need.
22:05It takes a lot of courage. It takes a lot of courage.
22:07You know. Wow.
22:09Yeah, it's amazing.
22:11And you have
22:13eight children, is that right?
22:15Eight children, three grandkids, yeah.
22:17Three grandkids. You only had two grandkids last time I met you.
22:19Yeah, there's a new addition to the family.
22:21When did that happen? It was like four weeks ago.
22:23Wow, congratulations.
22:25Amazing.
22:27Three grandchildren.
22:29Yeah, man. It's kind of sickening
22:31that he's got three grandchildren and he looks that good.
22:33I mean, amazing.
22:35In the book as well,
22:37you talk about, and this was kind of at the height of your first
22:39wave of fame, because I guess
22:41in a way, you've had several cycles,
22:43haven't you? Obviously as a kid
22:45you were doing well, but then So Solid Crew were
22:47massive. And in that period
22:49that was when you went to jail, when you were 19.
22:51Yeah, yeah.
22:53I talk about that in the book as well.
22:55It was a life-changing experience for me.
22:57Many years ago now,
22:59but for me it was like
23:01I realised, and this is no offence
23:03to anyone that was around me at the time,
23:05but you are who your
23:07circle is, basically.
23:09And I realised at the time a lot
23:11of the stuff I was getting to at that time
23:13wasn't about what I wanted to do.
23:15It was about being in the wrong place at the wrong time
23:17or predominantly with the wrong
23:19people sometimes.
23:21Coming out of prison, I made a big change.
23:23I changed my circle
23:25and completely changed my
23:27life around in that sense.
23:29I have a vivid memory of
23:31being brought into the holding cell.
23:33They put you in a holding cell with other
23:35inmates who have just come in as well
23:37for you to be processed.
23:39We were all sitting there together on this bench
23:41and they got a TV in the corner
23:43and it was just playing over and over again.
23:45The news story about you being...
23:47The news story of me being brought into court
23:49and I turned around and looked at these guys
23:51and they were like...
23:53And I realised I was going to be in
23:55for a hard time at that point.
23:57But I got through it, man, and I'm here.
23:59I just feel like you have to talk
24:01about these things because there's a lot of people
24:03thinking that their life's over because of
24:05situations like that.
24:07You can turn it around. Look, I'm sitting here next to you
24:09right now who would have thought it back then.
24:11That is amazing.
24:13That really is.
24:15That could have been the end, couldn't it, really?
24:17It could have been a downward spiral.
24:19I don't know if you
24:21know this, Ashley, but
24:23we have kind of a
24:25very, very
24:27committed, so solid fan
24:29on the couch with you there.
24:31Can you guess which one?
24:33Is it Daisy?
24:35Yeah, Daisy.
24:37Although Warwick has rapped in a movie,
24:39in Leprechaun,
24:41Warwick does a Leprechaun rap.
24:43Let's talk about that.
24:45But last time you were on, Daisy, you were talking about your love of a while back
24:47for So Solid and you did a big chunk
24:49of 21 Seconds.
24:51Yes, I know it very well.
24:53That's all I ever did at school
24:55was I think I had the album and I just
24:57had the lyrics in there. That was all me and my
24:59friends did in, like, geography, was just
25:01try and learn the lyrics. Learn that.
25:03That's where Asia is.
25:05LAUGHTER
25:07If only that had come up in the rap, eh?
25:09Could you still do it now?
25:11I could do a bit now, yeah.
25:13OK, would we like to hear a bit of Daisy doing 21 Seconds?
25:15CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
25:17OK. Would you like that?
25:19Oh, yeah, I've got to have a mic.
25:21Yeah, probably right. OK, Daisy.
25:23Right, are we ready?
25:25And it starts...
25:27It starts with a weird...
25:29Fucking family
25:31Who could it be? M with an H and a C
25:33That's me, fucking a family
25:35Who could it be? M with an H and a C
25:37That's me, MEC still fucking
25:39Chop pins in a rave while I'm clubbing
25:41Ladies come around in the bugging
25:43Bait Gs like the goers robbing
25:45Play haters, they're watching the propping and watch me stop
25:47Watching the propping and watch me crop
25:49Never going to stop, never going to stop
25:51CHEERING
25:53There we go, fam.
25:55It lives on.
25:57I applaud you.
25:59You did the hardest verse as well.
26:01What a dream come true to do that in front of Asher D.
26:03OK, do you still rap?
26:05I know you're still, mate. You're getting back into making music.
26:07I am.
26:09It literally released a single
26:11called Take A Pick, featuring Giggs,
26:13who's a big friend of mine.
26:15We grew up in Peckham together.
26:17And my EP, it's a five-track EP
26:19called Test The Waters 2
26:21was released yesterday.
26:23Wow, congratulations.
26:25Very productive man.
26:27That's a great five-track.
26:29Do the younger stars,
26:31cos I met you at the Stormzy gig
26:33as we established, do the younger stars,
26:35like the current stars of the grime scene,
26:37do they look up to you?
26:39When you meet someone like Stormzy or Skepta,
26:41do they say, oh, my God?
26:43Do they fuck? No.
26:45They don't give a shit.
26:47Look, I'm big fans of theirs,
26:49but they kind of...
26:51It's been so long
26:53since that period of time.
26:55You have to have really kind...
26:57You have to have brothers that beat you up
26:59when you were younger to make you listen
27:01to that music to still know it.
27:03You have to be from that time.
27:05The music I'm doing now is kind of a blend
27:07of the newest stuff, but more about
27:09catering for the people,
27:11well, for people like Daisy,
27:13who grew up listening to my stuff back then.
27:15I'm not trying to pretend to be young.
27:17I am who I am,
27:19and I'm just doing music that suits me now.
27:21Do your kids listen to your music?
27:23They're my biggest fans.
27:25My youngest daughter and my love
27:27and my son River, because I'm always
27:29playing my stuff in the car.
27:31The new stuff that I do in the studio,
27:33they know all the lyrics, they know all the songs,
27:35and now they've become the barometer
27:37for what stuff I put out or not.
27:39So if they think it's catchy and it works
27:41and they sing it, then it's going to go up.
27:43Daisy, I guess your kids are too young
27:45to watch most of your TV work, aren't they?
27:47Oh, no, I force them to sit down
27:49and watch my stuff.
27:51And they're not interested at all.
27:53Not even in The Masked Singer.
27:55They didn't like you on The Masked Singer?
27:57I did that. Well, I did it for the cash,
27:59but I did it also for my...
28:01Well, my daughter Pip is a huge fan
28:03of The Masked Singer,
28:05but when she found out I was doing it,
28:07she was mortified.
28:09She was so embarrassed.
28:11I thought, you little brat.
28:13Yeah, I was going to do this show,
28:15but they'd probably guess.
28:17Well, we're going to take a break,
28:19but don't go away, because afterwards
28:21we're going to be joined out here
28:23by the fabulous Jodie Whittaker.
28:25See you in a couple of minutes.
28:37Welcome back to the show.
28:39Let's get my next guest out,
28:41an actor who's always fabulous in everything she does.
28:43You might have seen her in Black Mirror.
28:45The new thing Toxic Town is excellent,
28:47and, of course, she was Doctor Who.
28:49It's Jodie Whittaker.
28:59That's a great outfit. I love it.
29:01Nice to have you here.
29:05You're doing very well.
29:07I realise I've got to apologise already,
29:09because you weren't Doctor Who,
29:11you were the Doctor. I was the Doctor.
29:13And Who fans, or Whovians,
29:15they are very, very on that kind of thing, aren't they?
29:17Yeah, you should be.
29:19But, you know, that's always good.
29:21What a thing to be, to have been the Doctor.
29:23It's an amazing thing.
29:25And I guess you're always going to get feedback from that.
29:27You're always going to get people coming up to you about that.
29:29I think the moment it stops, I'll be absolutely devastated.
29:31Because I'm very self-involved.
29:35And so, you know, if I'm in an environment
29:37and I think, oh, they might be a Whovian,
29:39there's a lot of eye contact from me.
29:41Trying to get them...
29:43So you like them to come up to you and talk about it?
29:45Oh, I love it. It's my happiest time.
29:47It's an amazing...
29:49It's an amazing gig.
29:51It's such a beautiful
29:53time to be on something.
29:55Because I don't know if, like, all of us that film,
29:57I've never done anything
29:59that the seasons are so long.
30:01So you film for, like,
30:03ten months.
30:05Same crew,
30:07same cast, and so you're just
30:09this massive family
30:11in Cardiff.
30:13It's brilliant.
30:15I remember talking to David Tannen once, and he said to me,
30:17the thing about when you're the Doctor is you are the Doctor for life.
30:19He's the favourite Doctor for life, you think.
30:21Because everyone will do this, they're like,
30:23oh, I loved your Doctor, David's my favourite.
30:25LAUGHTER
30:27Thanks.
30:29Ashley, you've been in Doctor Who.
30:31Yeah, I was, yeah. I did a couple of eps.
30:33It was an amazing experience.
30:35I think Matt was a Doctor
30:37then, when I did it.
30:39Yeah, I got in big trouble.
30:41Like, the Whovians are, like, crazy, man.
30:43Like, no disrespect, but
30:45they're on it.
30:47Because I took a picture in my trailer
30:49in my costume, right?
30:51I took a selfie, and I put it on
30:53Instagram, not knowing the rules.
30:55And within five, ten
30:57minutes, they'd worked out what
30:59the episode was about.
31:01It's just like, I just couldn't
31:03believe it. I got the producers knocking on my
31:05trailer door, like, I can't take it down.
31:07So, yeah, I loved my
31:09lesson, but it was an amazing experience
31:11and so good to be a part of, yeah.
31:13And Warwick has also been in Doctor Who.
31:15Indeed, Matt Smith was my Doctor,
31:17and it was an episode with the scary Cybermen.
31:19So, as a kid, I remember
31:21watching the Cybermen from behind the sofa
31:23being terrified, and there I was
31:25kind of face to groin
31:27with the Cybermen.
31:29LAUGHTER
31:31Daisy, you have never been...?
31:33I've already asked.
31:35Well, I mean, I've been asked to do
31:37Celebrity Bargain Hunt, so...
31:39LAUGHTER
31:41Next best thing. We should talk
31:43to Jodie about her new series, which is out
31:45on Netflix now. It's been out for a while. It's already
31:47went to number one in the UK on Netflix.
31:49It's an amazing series, and it's a based...
31:51And it's largely a true story, isn't it?
31:53Yes, I mean, yes, absolutely.
31:55It's called Toxic Town. What's the story about?
31:57Jack Thorne wrote it,
31:59and it's about a group of mothers
32:01who fought for the justice
32:03of their children. So,
32:05in the late 90s,
32:07mothers discovered
32:09that their children that were born with
32:11limb difference, that the connection
32:13of that was actually the environment
32:15they were living in. And it's...
32:17When you watch it, or, well, for me
32:19personally reading it, I can't
32:21believe I didn't know about it.
32:23And it's essentially, I play a woman,
32:25an incredible woman called Susan McIntyre,
32:27who, for... This doesn't
32:29happen overnight. For years and years
32:31and years, with a group of extraordinary
32:33women, fought
32:35for justice and acknowledgement
32:37of the negligent
32:39behaviour that caused an entire
32:41town to be toxic.
32:43The story itself in Bald Stokes
32:45is the council had to clear up some kind of land
32:47which had waste in it, which still works.
32:49Yeah. And then they were transporting
32:51the soil, which had all
32:53these contaminants in it, without
32:55really due care or attention. But really,
32:57what's fascinating about it is not that aspect of it.
32:59It is these women, these characters.
33:01And I think your performance is exceptional.
33:03Amy Lou Wood is in it. She's incredible as well.
33:05I mean, Robert Carlyle's in it. He's amazing.
33:07Not playing a woman, but he's amazing.
33:09We have a trailer. Let me show you the trailer,
33:11and we'll talk a bit more after. If you haven't seen it already,
33:13it's a great watch. It's on Netflix. It's called
33:15Toxic Town.

37:09It's we found love by Rihanna and Calvin Harris. Oh, well, you know, we've got the music for that
37:19We don't have the music yeah, did you do karaoke Ashley? No, I did
37:23I've got set up once like in I was shooting a film in Newcastle many many years ago and a friend from Newcastle
37:30Say come out for a drink with me. So I was like, all right, cool. It's an afternoon on the Saturday and
37:35she took me to a
37:37old people's bingo hall and I was
37:43Sat down for five minutes and and believe it or not
37:47The guy got up and was like and next we have Ashley waters
37:54But I did it I did it I did it it was fun
37:59And next we have
38:01I was that old guy that bingo. Hope yeah
38:05We're not gonna do any karaoke, we're pleased to know we might encourage
38:09Why to do a little bit left call that play one. Oh, is that the break holder?
38:13There's a way you've said that to keep him watching. Yeah
38:19She'll say some interesting things he probably will you definitely will why he won't
38:34You
38:41Welcome back to the show. I've still got all my fabulous guests here with me. Don't you?
38:45Let me ask you I was talking a little bit earlier about Ashley and him starting
38:48Acting not really being from an acting community and of course work as well, but your family weren't in show business anywhere were they?
38:54But Daisy you're not from an acting family either are you no, my uncle was an actor
38:59Yeah bits of bits and bobs, but your family all get involved now, don't they?
39:04My dad, oh my god, like I tell you what putting him in this country playing Martin
39:10But there was the worst thing I ever did me and Charlie agree
39:13And he just wants to be in everything now. He actually did a self-tape for am I being unreasonable?
39:22Holy so he sent you a self-tape audition piece. Yeah. Why would they just ask you to your face?
39:28Yeah, he sent me through his agent and I think his agent is also an electrician
39:34Anyway
39:36The problem with with my dad is he cannot learn lines and acting with him
39:41It's like have you ever seen a car on dry land? It's just rolling around
39:47and he is I mean he's he's having to do he's meant to be off script to do this sort of self-tape and
39:55He's blatantly got my mum to write in massive sort of like a sharpie on like bits of card
40:01And he still doesn't know his line
40:04And he's just doing Martin Muckler and I didn't cast him in it and it was a very sort of yeah
40:10It was an awkward Christmas. Okay, but
40:13Did you?
40:15Tell him yourself that you weren't gonna put him in it after his self-tape or did you have someone else do that?
40:20No, I got the BBC to do it, right? I
40:24Said can you just say it's gonna be a bit too much. Oh my god. He's gonna see this
40:30Oh, he's gonna watch this, you know
40:38Actually, we were talking backstage beforehand about your mom a little bit
40:42Obviously is an important thing in your life, of course
40:44Yeah, does she talk to you about your work?
40:46Does she offer you advice or input or kind of like critique what you're doing?
40:50She has one critique is like never put your hands. She's always like why why are you letting them film your hands?
40:57Come that was the promise your hands are terrible
41:01She cares about so I used to bite my nails. I stopped biting my nails about a year ago
41:06So they're not that bad now, but they were pretty bad and I just didn't really care
41:10So, you know, they do close-ups me picking up a glass or something like that and she'd be like
41:17So, yeah, that's been our only criticism
41:21What now you've just done a new show I think it was written by Jack Thorne as well
41:24It was yeah and Stephen Graham actually, it's called
41:27Adolescence is on the 13th
41:30And it follows I mean it follows the murder of a young girl
41:35And the accused who's a young kid called Jamie Miller
41:39So a lot about kind of toxic masculinity online
41:44And knife crime that way we're dealing with up and down the country at the moment
41:48So and I'm fascinated by how it's shot because each I think there's four episodes in the series that way and each one is shot in
41:53One continuous take yes one single take it was fucking hard, man
41:58It's like you had to learn it's like pretty much being on stage right if I'm doing a play
42:02Well, yeah, you learn the whole script and we had two chance
42:06We had ten chances to shoot it so you do two takes a day and it's literally, you know
42:11It just follows you through this whole whole thing and it's like really emotional because by the end of it
42:17You know, you're drained and you're actually, you know, you're fully in it. You're fully in character
42:21I'm really looking forward to it. You're talking about love it. You've done loads of stage work. Of course, haven't you? I've done a bit
42:27I actually haven't done loads. I've done probably
42:32Five plays six plays actually, I've never seen you live on stage. I'd like to see you live on stage
42:36Well, am I right thinking in your last role you were you had to be naked on stage as well
42:41My last role on stage. Yeah, I was I mean it was years ago
42:44I did a play called
42:45Off the ends and there's this one scene where I kind of I get rolled out on a sofa underneath a cover
42:51you know, I meant to be asleep and
42:53Before that you I run off stage and I get like they call it a cocksuck
42:59There's something some little pouch that covers your you know, they call it a cocksuck. Yeah
43:05In the industry, you know, I didn't make out. Okay. Okay. Do you use that to clean your bathtub?
43:16But I'm a sweater as you can tell I sweat a lot when I'm like working and stuff like that and
43:22So they put this thing on before I start and by the time, you know, it's time for me to come out
43:29It's just like it wouldn't stick
43:32So I'm getting pushed out
43:34And this so far on this sofa and I'm underneath the covers and I'm like shit. It's not sticking. It's not sticking
43:40So I just had to do it like actually nude and the other actors got a shock of their life because my bums face in
43:46The audience, that's fine. But usually it's covered
43:51And their faces it was a
43:56It was cold as well
44:00Well, what's next for you what are you doing now you're gonna take it easy after the big BAFTA Award
44:05Are you gonna go continue the world BAFTA tour? Yeah
44:10Because secretly part of me always hopes I will see leprechaun six out there
44:15Like that was the leprechaun versus pirates movie would be good. I would you like to see a clip of leprechaun before we go tonight?
44:23Yeah, no, well, you know I genuinely love these I know you do yeah, yeah, okay, so
44:29From leprechaun 4 starring white Davis. I know he's not as proud of it as I'm excited by it
44:34Have a look at this
44:40Oh
45:10I
45:12I
45:38Gonna want me to give it back
45:42It's been so lovely having you here Daisy continue success and good luck with the the show it's going great warwick-davis ladies and gentlemen
