00:00Good morning teammates and welcome to The Hobby Stadium for Treasures of the Game.
00:12I'm your host Rafael Bandairel and I'm here with our subject matter expert and resident sports memorabilia collector, Dr. Michael Rico Messina. Good morning, Doc.
00:24Good morning, Raph, and good morning to all the teammates watching us now.
00:29For Treasures of the Game.
00:31Doc, our Season 49 PBA Commissioners Cup is continuing.
00:37So today, we'll talk about PBA, but we'll go back to the 2000s. Is that right, Doc?
00:44Yes, that's right. For our episode today, we'll time travel to the 2000s and 2010s.
00:50To show our teammates the jerseys that were used during that time.
00:56And of course, those jerseys are courtesy of two of the biggest PBA stars in history.
01:04These two players are really good. They really touched the history of PBA and the Philippine basketball, Doc.
01:11So what is our first item on the list today?
01:16So teammates, our first item is a jersey, but it's not just a jersey.
01:24So if we look at it, in front of it, there's a heart.
01:29Underneath it, there's a selected name.
01:32So there's a PBA logo, and there's also a Philippine national flag logo.
01:37Then on the back, there's the Philippines, and number 6 under it.
01:45Doc, for our Gen Z teammates who might not be able to reach this team, please explain to us, what is this team, Doc?
01:55So this team is the Selecta RP Team Pool.
01:59So in 2002, PBA opened two teams to train our national team to compete in the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
02:14So we have two components for that.
02:16The first is the Happy RP Team and the Selecta RP Team.
02:21Which is this one.
02:22This jersey is what they represent.
02:24So now, who is wearing this number 6?
02:28So based on my research, the one wearing this number 6 is Captain Jimmy Alapag.
02:35So Doc, please tell us, how rare is this jersey?
02:40Because it's not usual, because Jimmy Alapag's stint here in the Selecta RP Team is not that long.
02:47Is that correct, Doc?
02:48So now, in that RP Team, Coach Jimmy was given the number 6, and he only wore it once.
02:57Because he had an injury, and because of that injury, he was not able to continue playing for the Selecta RP Team Pool.
03:06So this is what represents the jersey that he wore during that one game.
03:11So this particular jersey has value.
03:14Because it's so rare that Jimmy Alapag only wore it once.
03:18But Doc, as you said earlier, at that time, this was the selection of the National Team Pool.
03:25There were two teams, and they were included in the PBA.
03:29Can you just, Doc, as a longtime viewer of Philippine Basketball,
03:34and also a supporter of the Philippine National Basketball Team,
03:37how different was the process of forming the National Team back then and now?
03:42So at that time, what the PBA did,
03:45it divided our pool of players to two training teams.
03:53So they were 30.
03:55So half of them, 15, were placed in the Happy RP Team.
03:59The remaining 15 were placed in the Selecta RP Team.
04:03Then for one conference, the Governor's Cup of 2002,
04:07those two teams were included there so that our players can compete.
04:12Then from there, based on their performance there,
04:16the final roster was chosen for the Asian Games to represent our country.
04:23It's composed of both teams, right, Doc?
04:25Yes, so it's a combination of the best performing players from both teams.
04:30Now, let's fast-forward, teammates, to the 2010s,
04:34because Doc's next item is...
04:37So here, teammates, is a game-worn jersey.
04:42So who wore it?
04:44None other than...
04:45So number 18, Sanmig Coffee Mixers.
04:50So the two-time MVP, James Yap.
04:53Big Game James.
04:54Big Game James.
04:55So this is a game-worn jersey of James Yap in the 2012-2013 season.
05:01Doc, is this the jersey that Big Game James wore in their Grand Slam season?
05:08Actually, teammates, in the jersey, we'll know what year the player wore it
05:14and what were the accomplishments of that year.
05:17So if we look at this jersey of James Yap,
05:20it says Sanmig Coffee Mixers.
05:23That was in 2012-2013.
05:26Actually, the Grand Slam year of this team,
05:29with Martin Gris and other great players,
05:33was 2013-2014,
05:37where his jersey was Super Coffee Mixers.
05:40So the name changed, right, Doc?
05:42Yes.
05:43So the year before that, 2011-2012,
05:47B-Meg Llamados was the name of James Yap's team.
05:50That was Coach Tim Cohn's first year in this franchise, right, Doc?
05:54Yes, B-Meg Llamados was Tim Cohn's first year coaching B-Meg.
06:00B-Meg.
06:01And then next year, Sanmig Coffee Mixers,
06:04and then the following year, their Grand Slam.
06:06Grand Slam.
06:07So actually, this season, they weren't empty-handed, right?
06:12Because in the Governors' Cup, they were the champions of that Governors' Cup.
06:16Actually, if we add up the Grand Slam,
06:19the winners of that cup were four consecutive titles.
06:23What can you say to Coach Tim Cohn, Doc?
06:27Of course, we've always been singing his praises,
06:30especially when we saw the effect of his program here in the Gilas National Team.
06:36But of course, before he was our national head coach,
06:40here in PBA, he was really known as the winningest head coach.
06:45PBA coach of all time.
06:46Of all time.
06:47And for him to achieve to have a Grand Slam,
06:50and before his Grand Slam with Sanmig,
06:52he also had his last Grand Slam with Alaska, right, Doc?
06:55Yes, 1996 in Alaska, that's right.
06:58How impressive were the historical achievements that Coach Tim Cohn was doing?
07:04First, in the first place, having a Grand Slam is already very rare.
07:09So, only a few teams had a Grand Slam in the history of PBA.
07:13So, we have CRISPA, they had a Grand Slam twice.
07:18We have Sanmigel under Coach Norman Black.
07:21So, I think it was 1989, they also had a Grand Slam then.
07:24Then, there's Alaska by Coach Tim Cohn in 1996.
07:29Then, there's Sanmig Super Coffee Mixers, the next Grand Slam.
07:34So, it brings us the thought that Coach Tim Cohn was really a great coach
07:41because he had a Grand Slam against two different opponents.
07:45Doc, now, speaking of big game James, James Yap, because his jersey is here,
07:50what can you say about the impact of a James Yap in Philippine basketball?
07:55I think the impact of James Yap is that he's not just a shooter,
08:01it's also good to be an all-around offensive player.
08:04Because the nickname of big game James, one of his nicknames is the man with a million moves.
08:10Yes, a million moves.
08:11So, it means that his offensive repertoire is very varied.
08:15That's why it's really hard to stop him.
08:18You don't know where the offense will come from.
08:20Whether it's on the outside because he's a shooter, or on the inside because he can drive,
08:25and he also has 100 shots that are hard to stop.
08:32Now, Doc, this is a game worn, but there's something missing.
08:35What's missing?
08:36What's missing is a signature.
08:38Signature.
08:39James Yap is now serving as a public official.
08:43Yes, he's now a councilor in San Juan.
08:46And hopefully, in the near future, we'll be able to meet big game James.
08:50Maybe we'll be given a chance to sign this piece of PBA and San Miguel Coffee history.
08:58Sir James, if you're watching, someone's waiting for you.
09:03Teammates, and that's where our episode ends for today.
09:07I'm your host, Rafael Bandayrel.
09:09And I'm Doc Mico Messina.
09:12Until the next episode of Treasures of the Game.
09:15Sharing treasures, sharing stories.
