00:00It's funny, right?
00:02Like Debo Samuel got traded
00:05What was that a week ago? Something like that. Yeah, Debo Samuel got traded a week ago
00:11Sort of feel like we've been prepped for it
00:13so
00:15At the beginning of the year if you had told me that Debo Samuel was gonna leave for a fifth-round pick
00:22I think people would have been like hold
00:26The bleep on what yeah shut the front door totally
00:30Then we get prepped for it and a boombox guy plays for the Washington commanders, and there's kind of like
00:38Okay
00:39There there wasn't a terribly large response and then you know now today
00:46I don't know what what is the 49er fan response to this Drake Greenlaw if you're just joining us
00:52Has joined the Denver Broncos in free agency three years 35 million dollars and
00:58whether this is a smart thing or
01:01The exact opposite terms of the way the Niners are playing day one
01:06Like only time will tell
01:10You know, I largely I'm glad that they're sitting out a day where
01:16Contracts that are being handed out to me look too high. They just don't look like smart moves
01:22But then the view from 10,000 feet I can agree with you a little bit and say well like it's not great
01:29it's not great that you're just kind of like sitting there with holes getting created on your roster and
01:35And not knowing exactly
01:37Who you're going to fill them with because I you know, I don't know about you
01:41I think the question that pops into a Niner fan head is
01:47Are you rebuilding and we just don't know it?
01:51Like I said this to you last week the one thing I don't ever want to hear
01:57From execs with an organization for which I root. I don't ever want to hear you talk about saving money
02:04How about breaking even?
02:07No, I know that that sets you off
02:09Shout out the Johnson's and the Giants. Well, Johnson's do and say all kinds of things that I don't prefer
02:16but yeah, I
02:18Don't want to hear
02:20owners
02:21general managers or anyone else with teams
02:25talk about
02:26money, I
02:27Just don't want to hear it and it doesn't mean that you don't have financial issues. Sure. You've got rules
02:34Contracts, I don't I don't want you out in the street throwing money into the air either
02:40But as a fan, I don't want to hear it. I don't want to hear you have a press conference where you go. All right
02:49We got goals for this year
02:51We're going to
02:53Try save some money
02:55We're going to reboot
02:57We're going to get younger. These are all trigger phrases that mean the same thing
03:03And I don't want to hear it
03:04it basically means that we're not that sold out to go out there and win and I do think that you can
03:11Do a couple of things and still be competitive, especially in the National Football League
03:16But I can't help to think a couple of different things one
03:20They have done poorly in some contracts of late and they do have a lot of dead money
03:25They've got about 50 million dollars against the cap for players who will not play football for them. That's bad business
03:32and the other piece is
03:34The report that the Niners are exploring selling a 10% stake in the team
03:39Which the valuation is at 9 billion, which means if you've got 900 million
03:44You too can be a York you can own part of the 49ers if you've got 900 million
03:50so I don't think that the York family is
03:53Hard up and short on money
03:55But it is interesting that you're gonna sell off a 10% stake and you're now
04:02Not really out there spending a lot of money in free agency, even though you do have some cap room
04:07It just it strikes me as a little bit odd and all of this for me
04:11Mark is set against the reality of your upcoming schedule next year, which is not a very difficult schedule now
04:18We don't know the order of opponents, but you are playing a last-place schedule
04:23So you might be able to save some money shed some salaries and still be competitive
04:30Against some of the teams that you're going to be facing
04:33Yeah, it doesn't mean that anyone's a pushover
04:35But you do have you got the Giants and they don't look to be world beaters
04:39no, you know the Bears who are getting better quietly day after day, but
04:45Saving grace could be that could be saving grace could be that
04:48You know, maybe they do maybe they have enough to win most of these games and win the division anyway
04:53I mean the Seahawks
04:55Just got rid of two of their biggest names
04:58I know they replaced him with Sam Darnold today. Maybe that'll work. Maybe it won't I don't know who he's throwing the ball, too
05:03He's got Jackson Smith and Jigwa and what else I have no idea
05:06So they're rebooting the Cardinals don't ever really scare me the Rams look fun, but I don't know exactly how that's gonna play out
05:13They've got a good quarterback and good wide receivers outside of that
05:16That's a really young defense that wasn't very impressive last year got a little bit better in the end
05:22Okay, not a terribly difficult division not a very difficult schedule at all
05:28But I'm sorry, dude, I don't want to go into a season yelling about that
05:33Like yeah, we got an easy schedule and easy division that makes you the Bucs
05:42You're not gonna win anything that matters
05:45Like I want to know how you gonna beat the Lions and the Eagles and the commanders
05:50I mean right now you're helping the commanders right now. You Debo Samuel
05:54Yeah right now you're hoping that you can beat the likes of the Titans and the Bears and
06:00The Browns and the Colts and the Giants and the Saints. That's all those are all on your schedule
06:07So you win those games you split your division you're nine and eight and you're probably eating it into the wild card
06:14But right now it doesn't even feel like on this day if you run down the list of losses, and I know that
06:21With Keith Givens
06:22Kevin given Kevin given Kevin they signed Kevin Givens, right?
06:26So that is news that just broke during our last break
06:30So you've got a blocking tight end and you've got a depth piece on your d-line
06:35Meanwhile you lose how many different starters? Well, you lost
06:40Green Longer who Funga
06:42Sarverius Ward, that's three right there. Thanks for and then
06:46Backup backup backup backup so and you got rid of Malik Collins and Javon Hargrave
06:54So there's a lot more going out than is coming
06:57You know Patrick Taylor jr. Also signed to stay on a one-year deal to the RB for okay
07:03Well, hold on a second. What if I threw this at you? What if I threw this at you?
07:07Okay, it's just just for conversation sake. Okay
07:12All those names you just mentioned. Yeah
07:14Who are leaving
07:17How many of them produced
07:20last year, uh
07:22well by produced you mean like way you would want them to produce, uh,
07:28I would say Aaron Bankston. He's a guy who played almost every snap and
07:33Okay, so by producing we're now where we put in the bar like for do our various Ward. It's no different
07:39Produced he was injured. He had personal tragedy. He had some good games, but I I disagree with you on that
07:46Well, okay like Javon Hargrave. He got hurt. So and in the games he played which was two or three of them
07:53I guess my point is he Collins produce. Yeah, but he I know he's going to be released
07:58He hasn't been released right but the point point point is this if if you liked the 49ers going into last year
08:05I know they went 6 and 11, but they were coming off of a Super Bowl appearance
08:10and
08:12How many shows did we spend talking about the blown leads the only the games that they had?
08:17I still think that they in a way they had the makings at least of a good football team last year and
08:24Those who produced in that situation like over the last year and a half of 49er football
08:31Who did they lose?
08:32who produced I
08:34Mean like guys where you went. Oh, that was a good year
08:38Then you played well this year, right? Well who played well last year. Is that is the
08:44Point, I'll give you okay. It's a list of about five people. Oh, I don't think that's fair. I don't think that's fair at all
08:51I would say they rock kiddle. Okay, honey. Okay, Fred Warner and
08:57Joanne Jennings
09:00Renardo green Malik Mustafa D'Amedore Lenore
09:03Well, absolutely more than five people those guys the last three D'Amedore Lenore missed a few handful of games late in the year and
09:12Mustafa was pretty good. I mean the rookie so we hold him to a rookie stand. Yeah. Yeah. He was really good
09:19Dude, he's really really exciting young player and Lenore was fantastic, dude. He was restaurant quality last year
09:25Yeah, I'll give you all eight of those eight out of 53
09:30I mean again and you go six and a lot just for a counterpoint of
09:33And a discussion point. I don't think the Niners have lost anybody today. Who are they like that guy played really well last year
09:40Yeah, but the point is that last year was just last year
09:43It doesn't mean that they aren't good football players. They didn't have a good year
09:46What did they lose that was good the year before that?
09:49Charveris Ward was very good the year before it was and and and and I think we've all been in agreement that that has been
09:56Telegraphed is a good thing if you want to it's unfortunate
10:00But Charveris Ward, we've known for a while now that this is his last year with right with the Niners
10:06So there's no there. I don't even know if there's a conversation there. Drake Greenlaw to me is the is the name
10:12Greenlaw Elijah Mitchell was great last year not this year, but the year before this year. He was hurt the whole year
10:17He was great. He was our B2. He was very a very solid contributor
10:22He did what Patrick Mason did this year. You mean Jordan Mason? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I
10:28I don't think Eli Mitchell did two years ago what Jordan Mason did this last year?
10:34But yeah that one that one doesn't sting either again just for conversation sake without knowing who's replacing these players
10:41I I I am NOT having any sort of an emotional reaction
10:46Or even in an X's and O's reaction to any of these except for Drake Greenlaw and even that one
10:52You're like that's emotional more than it is X's and O's. No, I mean two quarters, right?
10:56But but again, we went even to the year before that
10:59Yeah, what I'm saying is that we know that Drake Greenlaw if he looks like Drake Greenlaw is a great player
11:05That's a great player. I I don't know if any of these other guys
11:10Have great player in him. I know that Ward did at a certain point in his career. He was great
11:16Or at least really good. I don't know if that's ever coming again
11:21And and I don't think that that applies to anybody else, you know, so
11:27I get it. I get it today. Today's not a great day. I'm not over here saying that it's not a great day
11:34But I also outside of Greenlaw
11:37I don't see any contract that if I were running the Niners and you brought it to me and you went
11:43Do you want to match that? I'd be like, no, I
11:47don't
11:48No, thanks
11:51That's what I would have said to all of these
11:52Yeah
11:53Well, I wonder then we can just sit back and wait and see what they replace it with and you know
11:59You're replacing Ward with you know green. Okay. He was good. He had a good year last year
12:05Can he step up and be?
12:06The opposite starting corner and be a guy who can be as good as char various Ward was at his best
12:12You hope so. Can Mustafa replace?
12:16Talano who Funga at times last year. He sure did look good
12:19He brought a lot of thump and yeah
12:21we'll see if he can be that guy to step up in year two and be as good as who Funga was at his
12:26Best because last year all these names that were mentioning they were part of a 6 and 11 team
12:31So we can talk about how great all these guys were but it didn't lead to winning
12:37Yeah, of course not but you know that I get doesn't necessarily drive the bus when each of them are coming to you with a free
12:44agent contract if Aaron Banks comes to me and says dive upon offer in hand from the Packers for 77 million dollars
12:50Shake his hand and say congratulations. It's cold there by a jacket. I mean afford a jacket. Yeah, he can't
12:57Yeah, you're listening to 95 7 the game KGM ZFM and HD 1 San Francisco on Odyssey Sports Station
13:03always live on the free odyssey app twitch and YouTube powered by first NorCal credit union for a low-rate auto loan apply online or
13:10Just ask for first NorCal financing at the dealer if you just get in your car after five o'clock
13:17Congrats, you made it through another workday
13:19Aaron Banks Charverius Ward Talano who Funga Dre Greenlaw Jalen Moore Josh Dobbs and Eli Mitchell all play for other teams
13:27But the Niners did bring back Kevin Givens
13:30They did bring back Patrick Taylor jr.
13:32And they signed Luke Farrell a blocking tight end from the Jacksonville Jaguars
13:38Did I miss anyone or is that their day? I think you got it all. I got it. That's their day. That's the night
13:46Yeah, it's not inspirational
13:48I mean, I think you you can I've been barged from earlier in their bars
13:52Yeah, which had already taken place and Debo Samuel if we wanted like adding things that have already happened a guy named Tom Linsen
13:58I think to Tom Linsen cornerback. Yeah, they claimed him off waivers. Oh a guy named Tom Linsen
14:04I'm like his first name is not LaDainian. I'm not all that into it
14:08But anyway, yeah, not a great day and and this I think is a media and fan thing
14:15I'll admit that there have been moments where I've felt this I
14:18Don't know if you're supposed to govern your team this way, but yeah, it would be nice to have some sort of a signature move
14:25Well, how would you feel about today if Joey Bosa had signed with the 49ers, I would feel a little bit better
14:31I'm not that enamored with the idea of Joey Bosa a guy who's missed half of his games over the last three years
14:38He is a declining off injured player
14:41So the idea of two Bosa's and you know
14:45Maybe having a weekly conversation with his mom who's a good interview
14:48That sounds fun to me and the whole Bosa brothers and like the new bash brothers
14:54You know that whole part of it would be fun, but from a pure football standpoint
14:59I don't think that that's where I'd want to spend my money and he's gonna be I don't know how much he's gonna get probably
15:06More than Drake Greenlaw just got who got what 35 million over three years feels to me like Joey Bosa is gonna be
15:1315 million a year or more for who knows how long how many years?
15:17Yeah, he's coming up on being 30 and he's just hurt all the time
15:21If you're gonna sign Bosa that better be a lot of incentives for everything that you just said
15:27I
15:28Am NOT wooed by the novelty of having a Bosa on both ends of the defensive line
15:33I am NOT wooed by the novelty that I I like the novelty part of it would be fun
15:39It's fun, but it's only fun if he plays football
15:42Okay, do you know how many games that he's played in the last three seasons out of a possible 51?
15:49Think the answer is 25. I think it's 28
15:51I looked it up barely have you know how many started fewer than that, but it doesn't even matter starting
15:57I mean, I get it
15:59But I know well if you're not like if you're not out there for the first snap on defense
16:04Then you don't get the start. Well, I'll play 55 snaps, but you didn't start I get your point
16:09They're not buying them out there for full level of snaps if they're not starting them
16:12It means he's either partially hurt or they only saw him as a rotational piece
16:16Yeah, which by the way may exactly be what the 49ers see in him
16:19Well, that's what the way the 49ers use Nick Bosa. He only plays about 75% of the snaps
16:24He's not a guy who plays every snap on defense. It's not the way they approach it here
16:29The Denver defense will have DJ Jones a defensive tackle Drake Greenlaw right behind him and Tylenol who Funga right behind him
16:38little alumni game
16:40Right, that's the Broncos
16:43Let's go to Jose and Hayward Jose. Thanks for calling. What's up?
16:47Hey, you know, I just want to say I know losing Greenlaw that hurts. It definitely hurts
16:52But you know what? We got one of the best coaches defensive coordinators come back to coach his team
16:58And he's gonna get the best out of these guys. So even though I'm hurt that Greenlaw's gone
17:03I got faith in the coach. He'll get him to play
17:07Jose thanks and obviously a reference to Robert Sala
17:11Coming back and you know
17:13Look, that's one of those round-and-round things like a coach is only as good as his players and the players are to a degree
17:20Certainly, I don't want to say only as good as their coach
17:22But yeah, like if you're not you may good player if you're not a well coached organization, that's not gonna go
17:28Well, I think that the Niners are a very well coached organization. I think they've got a lot of good players, but
17:34What
17:35Today feels like is an extension of what my first reaction was when John Lynch spoke at the combine
17:42I don't know if you remember that conversation
17:44but when I listen to him talk and he was talking about getting younger and
17:50He was talking about certain players and he was talking about at a certain point the financial part of it
17:55Starts to kind of take shape the whole vibe of the thing
18:00Was the Niners brass is taking their team back and I really feel like they felt
18:06like they had lost control of
18:09The power in recent years they got beat on the Bosa deal
18:13They get beat on the IUC deal and you know what?
18:16I mean by getting and then and and obviously Trent Williams goes into a holdout
18:21Christian McCaffrey the second he acts
18:23They they blink and give him more money and then everybody shows up one day kind of old and hurt and
18:30underperforming and so, you know, whether this is a good thing or a bad thing or somewhere in between
18:36The brass walked in this year and went dude. We're in charge
18:41We're in charge. We're not handing out. Thank you contracts
18:44And if we see an offer to another team that looks out of whack
18:50We're gonna we're not gonna blink
18:52and
18:54I could look that that takes some courage, I guess
18:59But at the same time
19:01They're not wrong
19:03Yet. Yeah, you go four and thirteen then you're wrong and you're wrong
19:07If you are relying on and I don't want to keep putting his name out there like he's not very good
19:13But if it's Ben Bartsch and Kevin Givens and these are your guys and you're gonna have you know
19:20Jake Brendel as your center and a 37 year old left tackle and you don't add wide receivers
19:25Whatever you try and do in the draft and free agency if it doesn't work, then you were wrong
19:31And that's just the way it goes. It's a results business like the team last year. Should they have been better than six and eleven?
19:38Absolutely, but you had three games that you blew that would have made you nine and eight and there was other games that you probably
19:44Could have got it out and that's the way football goes
19:47It's a razor's edge of winning and losing and if you wind up with a team
19:52that's just not good enough and you're paying Brandon Iuke 30 million a year and he's coming off of a
19:58double knee injury two ligaments torn in his knee and he may not be available at the start of the year and you go forward
20:04With just Jacob Cowling and Ricky Pearsall if that's not good enough
20:08Then yeah
20:09you lose and I'll look back on these days where you had more exits than entrances and
20:15Remember that this was a time where your roster just didn't get better. Yeah. Well and again, I
20:20Early, yeah, the Niners are not gonna forget to sign people
20:23I I look at it simply from the the standpoint of like do you want the player back and
20:30Part of that is based on what we know and and and we've watched and then part of that is based on
20:35The reporting that we we stay so close to and I I know that the 49ers wanted Drake Greenlaw back
20:41And and they didn't get him. I don't think that they really had a
20:45Too much interest in keeping any of the other players and I also know they're not like morons
20:52So it's not like they woke up today and didn't know that today was today. It's not like they don't have a plan
20:59in terms of who they're going to put into these positions, so
21:04I
21:05Don't think it's freak out time yet. I really don't yeah
21:07I'm not freaking out
21:08but it has me thinking more and more about last year being a
21:12Super Bowl or bust year and now we're starting to see the bust where you're busting this up and you had
21:19Six or seven guys leave today and you're right if you look at the list of players who are leaving none of them had
21:25absolutely stellar years and if they're
21:28Making more money than what they're worth or if their contract offers out there or more than what you want to pay
21:33You move on and I look at Jayvon Hargrave and you look back on that deal and that was a bad deal and the Debo
21:40Restructure was a bad deal and the Brandon IU contract was a bad deal and Trent Williams
21:46We're gonna see that may end up being a bad deal as well and Christian McCaffrey when you restructured him
21:52That might be a bad deal to a guy who's got bilateral Achilles tendonitis
21:57He was unable to play even a maybe a quarter of the season last year before sustaining a different injury
22:04So all these players that you were trying to make happy and restructure and give them, you know
22:10Fresh money to make their deals solid for them. They're looking like bad deals
