Robert Jenrick says an end to the fighting in Ukraine must be "sustainable" and ensure Vladimir Putin "doesn't just come back for a second bite of the cherry in the months or years to come". The shadow justice secretary adds that Donald Trump was wrong to call Volodymyr Zelenskyy a dictator, but is "absolutely right" that Europe needs to "step up" on defence spending for NATO to survive. 00:00Well, we want to see an end to the fighting and the killing that we have in Ukraine right
00:05now, but it's got to be a sustainable peace, one which ensures that Vladimir Putin doesn't
00:10just come back for a second bite of the cherry in the months or years to come, and that defends
00:14the security of Ukraine and of Eastern Europe.
00:18That means putting pressure on Putin to ensure that this is a meaningful, serious peace.
00:24It also means European countries, including ourselves, stepping up and taking greater
00:29responsibility for our own defence so that we can create a credible deterrence.
00:34It's right that the Prime Minister has increased defence spending here, but frankly, 0.2% in
00:392027 is small beer.
00:41We want to ensure that we get to 3% of GDP as soon as possible, and you do that by taking
00:47money out of the aid budget, by reducing welfare, by making the savings that we know are there
00:51within the public sector.
00:53The United States is our oldest and most important ally, and it's right that we have the strongest
00:58security relationship with the President and his administration.
01:02I did think it was wrong that he described President Zelensky as a dictator and suggested
01:09that Ukraine was responsible for starting the war.
01:12Those were offensive comments which were almost taking the talking points of Vladimir Putin.
01:19But where President Trump is absolutely right is that Europe needs to step up.
01:23If NATO is going to survive, European countries need to increase their defence spending, take
01:28greater responsibility for our own defence, and that is exactly what we are urging both
01:34our own government and other European partners to do now.
