00:42NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited the White House to meet with U.S. President
00:46Donald Trump.
00:47The meeting took place on the same day that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed in
00:51principle with the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in its war on Ukraine.
00:56Many items were on the agenda, chief among them the Kremlin's invasion of Kyiv.
01:19Also on the agenda was U.S.-Europe defense cooperation and Washington's commitment to
01:23NATO after Trump had made repeated threats to withdraw the U.S. from the military alliance.
01:29Trump and Rutte did not schedule a post-meeting press conference, but speaking to reporters
01:33in the Oval Office, Rutte hailed Europe's latest efforts to bolster its defenses and
01:38commitment to increase military spending.
02:04The pair also discussed Greenland, which Trump

02:17The 47th U.S. president renewed his interest in the Arctic island under the Danish crown,
02:22adding that the NATO boss could be instrumental to realizing that goal.
02:32Russia's President Vladimir Putin has said he agrees in principle with the U.S. proposal
02:37for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, but he said some of the terms still need to be worked
02:42out and that the deal should pave the way to an enduring peace.
03:04Putin also said any deal should tackle what the Kremlin calls the root causes of the conflict.
03:26That's thought to be a reference to Ukraine's wish to join the NATO military alliance, something
03:30Moscow has said it won't tolerate.
03:33Also expected to be a topic Moscow and Kyiv won't agree on is what happens to the territory
03:38Russia seized during the war.
03:40Putin didn't mention Moscow's occupation of Ukrainian territory or the atrocities committed
03:45during the full-scale invasion now in its fourth year.

04:05Germany's likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, urged lawmakers on Thursday to loosen
04:09the country's strict debt limits to increase defense spending.
04:12Merz says his multibillion-euro proposal to reform Germany's debt break is essential to
04:18ensure national and European security.
04:45The proposal comes amid growing European worries over security after U.S. President
04:56Donald Trump's shifting foreign policy stance that's been highly critical of Europe.

05:12Merz wants to exclude defense spending that exceeds 1 percent from the debt break.

06:06Belgian police has searched the Brussels headquarters of Huawei and several homes in a major corruption
06:12investigation linked to the European Parliament.
06:18According to reports, 15 current or previous MEPs might be targeted in the case, and some
06:24arrests have been already made.
06:29Investigators suspect that members of the network received bribes in exchange for influencing
06:34EU decision-making in Huawei's favor.
06:59Belgian prosecutors sealed the offices of two assistants to MEPs and notified the parliament's
07:05president about the proceedings.
07:08The parliament's press service said they will cooperate with the investigators.
07:15The European Parliament's reputation suffered a serious blow three years ago when a corruption
07:20ring working to promote the interests of Qatar was dismantled.
07:27One thing is for sure for this EU institution, there will be a huge reputational damage in
07:33the coming weeks.

07:41This French military vessel is hunting naval mines as part of an exercise dubbed Ariadne
07:47commanded by the Greek Navy.
07:49Teams from the US, Romania and Belgium are also taking part.
07:53On board each ship are mine clearance divers and specialized drones.
07:58We caught up with Commander Melin of the Capricorn to learn more.
08:54This sort of painstaking work, nowadays primarily used to clear mines that have been used in
09:00conflict since the First World War or to secure theaters of operations before the deployment
09:06of other military vessels, is about to undergo a revolution as next generation naval drones
09:12should come online in a few years and replace the need for this demagnetized ship to navigate
09:17over underwater minefields, which puts dozens of sailors' lives at risk.
09:22The French military is currently testing such a drone.
09:25This anti-mine warfare exercise is also aimed at fostering cooperation among NATO maritime
09:31forces and crucially boosting interoperability, a key goal of the military alliance since
09:37the outbreak of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
09:52The Capricorn will take part in the Steadfast Start 2025 exercise, which is NATO's major
10:00exercise for the year 2025.
10:02We will meet the NATO DG around Rotterdam to take part in another exercise in the hospital
10:10and the hunters, there is also a French mine hunter who is integrated with the NATO DG.

10:19United Nations-backed experts on Thursday accused Israel of systematic use of sexual,
10:25reproductive and other gender-based violence in its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
10:31Reproductive violence refers to a wide range of sexual violence, including forced pregnancy
10:36and forced sterilization and forced abortion, among other things.
10:40Our report finds that Israel has increasingly employed sexual, reproductive and other forms
10:47of gender-based violence against Palestinians as part of a broader effort to undermine their
10:53right to self-determination.
10:55It also concludes that Israel has carried out genocidal acts through the systematic
11:00destruction of sexual and reproductive health care facilities.
11:04Israel rejected the allegations, accusing the Commission of Inquiry of relying on second-hand
11:09single, uncorroborated sources and refusing to cooperate with it.
11:13The Commission also accused Israeli security forces of rape and sexual violence against
11:18Palestinian detainees.
11:20Israel denies any systematic abuse of prisoners and says it takes action when there are violations.
11:26Hamas says the report by United Nations-backed human rights experts is confirmation of severity
11:31of the crime Israel is inflicting on the Palestinians.
11:34The Commission's findings can be used as evidence for the International Criminal Court
11:39or other bodies that seek to prosecute war crimes.
