Spain is in the midst of a clean energy revolution - and wind farms are driving the transition.
But as the country moves closer to its target of 80% renewable electricity by 2030, a landslide of lawsuits has paralyzed more than 70 projects - some mid-construction. Correspondent Ken Browne has the story.

00:00Galicia, the beautiful green Spain with its captivating coastline and enigmatic history.
00:08But not everyone is happy with one part of this scene.
00:11Turbine invasion, energy colonization, sacrifice zone.
00:16Just some of the phrases used by protesters in Galicia against the installation of wind farms.
00:24But to reach the contested sites, you first have to negotiate local traffic.
00:29This half-built wind farm was stopped by the Save the Oribio Mountain conservationist platform
00:35and a Spanish Supreme Court ruling because it's in a nature network protected zone.
00:41We are not against wind energy.
00:44We're against the model of implementation of wind energy in our territory.
00:52Other sites are only reachable on foot.
00:55Just watch out for wild horses.
00:58Locals here on Mount Asibal above the village of Amil say their heritage is literally being blown up.
01:06Construction companies use dynamite to clear rocks.
01:10You might not be able to see it very well from there, but right here on this rock,
01:14there's a Celtic cross that's around 3,000 years old.
01:18And this single rock carving stopped the installation of a wind turbine
01:22that would be over 200 meters tall right here.
01:26You can see it better here, and people in the area say they have found 50 other markings
01:32that go back to Roman, Celtic, and even earlier eras.
01:36We are standing on an ancient ground, a place of many legends with a wealth of archaeological artifacts
01:40that we have to protect, which they're simply happy to dynamite.
01:45Crowdfunded legal challenges now stop most installations before they even break ground.
01:51More than 70 projects are currently paralyzed.
01:55A 2023 Deloitte report estimates that the region risks losing over $6 billion of investment
02:02and 7,000 direct jobs.
02:05Galicia is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs, say others.
02:10In Galicia, more than 75% of people are in favor of further development of wind energy.
02:16Spain has to move forward to renewable energy generation.
02:20Green energy projects in other countries face similar challenges.
02:24Germany's far-right AFD party put anti-renewables rhetoric at the center of regional election campaigns
02:31with great success.
02:32And in Italy, a new law in Sardinia has made wind turbines off-limits for 90% of the island.
