00:00Robotics Company 1X recently released video of its new robot, Neo-Gamma, doing various tasks in a home setting.
00:08We dig into all the details, explain how Neo-Gamma is different from its predecessor, and where the world of home robotics may be headed.
00:17The recent demo video shows Neo-Gamma carrying a kettle of hot water, straightening a picture, carrying laundry, vacuuming, cleaning windows, picking up grocery bags, delivering a bottle of wine, tidying up, and sitting down.
00:33Important to note, this demo said nothing about how the robot was being controlled.
00:38As we've learned from past experience, if a company isn't bragging about what its robots can do autonomously, you definitely should not assume it's doing anything autonomously.
00:471X has shown videos of its EVE robots working autonomously performing certain tasks, but hasn't made any such claims about the Neo-Gamma.
00:56One thing that's unique about 1X is its history of producing robots that come fully dressed. Even their wheeled robot EVE wears clothes.
01:04You might even say before 1X's robots could walk, they had a fit on.
01:081X says Neo's suit and shoes are 3D printed nylon and feature a minimalist design to fit easier into the home aesthetic.
01:15I'd imagine the soft exterior may also help protect interior electrical components from pets, kids, or other things it may run into in the home, and vice versa.
01:26My only hope is that the robot's clothes are machine washable, because I expect it'll get some stains on it, especially if you're going to have the robot doing stuff like bringing you red wine and cleaning up messes.
01:36Many humanoid robots feature two cameras to get a sense of depth.
01:41Neo-Gamma appears to have its cameras side by side in a mimicry of human eyes, whereas Figure, a competing robotics company, has them positioned with one on top of the other.
01:51One major update from the previous generation Neo-Beta is the Neo-Gamma's earrings, which are more than just an aesthetic feature.
01:58The company says the light loops will provide, quote, real-time visual feedback for a more intuitive and interactive experience.
02:06This kind of reminds me of when Agility Robotics added a head to their Digit robot.
02:11Not to help the robot see, the built-in sensors already had that covered.
02:15Digit's head was designed to help with human-robot interaction.
02:18In order to telegraph to nearby people where it's headed or what it's doing, Digit can simply turn its animated eyes in that direction like a human would.
02:27One X doesn't reveal in its videos how exactly these earrings will be used.
02:32Based on my own experiences with the visual language of technology, I could imagine it being used to indicate things like listening to a command, planning its next action, charging, or to measure remaining battery life.
02:45While the majority of humanoid robotics companies are aiming at industrial, manufacturing, and logistics applications, One X stands out for its singular focus on the home.
02:55Still, it's not the only company aiming for home use.
02:58Elon Musk has said Tesla's Optimus robots will someday be capable of household tasks.
03:03It can be a teacher, babysit your kids, it can walk your dog, mow your lawn, get the groceries, just be your friend, serve drinks.
03:10And the CEO of Figure announced plans to begin testing its robots in the home sometime this year.
03:16And that announcement comes less than a week after One X announced the Neo Gamma.
03:21While the humanoid robotics race is definitely heating up, there's still many more milestones to be passed before we're likely to see these things out in the wild.

03:37As always, thanks so much for watching. I'm your host Jesse Earl. See you next time with the fam.
