00:00We are also very grateful to all of the healthcare professionals across the country and around
00:06the world who are on the front lines during COVID-19.
00:10This global pandemic is a catastrophe.
00:12I'm so thankful to them, and I'm also praying for those who are sick.
00:30I didn't come from very much.
00:57I had to struggle and fight to become the woman that I am today.
01:21When I was younger, I was so insecure, and I was bullied in school, and I didn't believe
01:26in myself.
01:27But when I turned 19, I decided that I wanted to be a musician, and I hit the ground running.
01:33And I was pounding the pavement in New York City, banging on every door to get a job to
01:39sing anywhere that I could.
02:02I am a gay rights activist and a social justice activist.
02:07I believe in the power of music to change people's lives.
02:23Despite the political advances made in terms of our rights and visibility as an LGBT people,
02:30sadly the truth and the fact is that homophobia and anti-gay violence and bullying are alive
02:36and real.
03:06I can't help but feel that this level of hatred, like all prejudicial crimes, this is an attack
03:25on humanity itself.
03:45Only statements that I'll be making during the halftime show are the ones that I have
03:49been consistently making throughout my career.
03:52I believe in a passion for inclusion.
03:55I believe in the spirit of equality.
04:10There is an element and a very strong piece of me that believes that pain is a microphone.
04:17And my pain really does me no good unless I transform it into something that is.
04:36For someone that doesn't necessarily feel safe, that vulnerable all the time, it was
04:41such a special experience with him.
04:44He made me just feel so free and at the same time he is so laser focused while he's working
04:50and such a visionary.
04:52So I got to live my dream.
04:56I've always wanted to be an actress and there can be 100 people in the room and 99 don't
05:01believe in you and you just need one to believe in you and that was him.
05:04So I'm very lucky to be here.
05:14When this Oscar was handed to me tonight, I looked right in the eyes of it and I saw
05:37a lot of pain.
05:39I saw all the things that I've been through.
06:09What's very important is he makes happen.
06:39It's very important for all of us that we celebrate and we highlight the singular, kind,
06:46global community that is arising right now.
06:48Two, we want to highlight the gravity of this historical, unprecedented cultural movement.
06:55And three, we want to celebrate and encourage the power of the human spirit.
07:09you
