Extreme rain in a short amount of time caused significant flooding in South Texas on March 27.
Transcript
00:00Well, we want to take a look at what's going on in South Texas and South Padre Island here still dealing with some widespread rain and it's 75 degrees, rain really coming down heavily here for some.
00:10It is a tough one at the South Padre Island area there, especially just through parts of the barrier islands and then down along the Rio Grande, that view from the South Padre Surf Company.
00:20Here we're dealing with some ongoing flash flood warnings, three, four now flash flood warnings.
00:24One for southwestern Willisee County, western Cameron County, much of Hidalgo County.
00:29There's another flash flood warning right over McAllen.
00:31We had over six inches of rain in two hours in McAllen and then into other areas to the west, Star County, Texas, flash flood warning in progress.
00:39We do also have two severe thunderstorm warnings here in southeastern Hidalgo County and into Cameron County.
00:45It includes southern Willisee County with that risk of damaging wind and hail.
00:50It's a nasty storm, big time thunderstorm, rolling east, rumbling east very slowly.
00:55We've been checking out some of the storm hazards associated with this.
00:58There has been some hail around one inch in diameter.
01:01We're also facing some strong winds.
01:03Some of the reports here associated with this have involved some flooding.
01:06Combs, Texas this morning, emergency management closing roads while we're back into the heavy rain.
01:11Now, several homes have water in them into the area of Hidalgo County and far.
01:17Webcam showing two to three feet of water at one intersection, Cage and Ferguson.
01:22Other areas here, McAllen, one to two feet of water at 15th and Business 83.
01:26And then several vehicles with water above hoods, three to four feet of water in at least one parking lot in McAllen, Texas.
01:33Incredible stuff out there.
01:34We wanted drought relief.
01:36This is way too much, though, in a short period of time.
01:39So, again, we're going to continue to track this.
01:40And the risk is there for some downpours farther north, showers and thunderstorms into areas around Dallas and Houston as well.
01:48But we're going to be tracking these issues here through the next few days.
01:51So, dangerous flooding from the Rio Grande north up into San Antonio and Victoria.
01:56A lot of this to this point has been near the Rio Grande.
01:59But we have some big time risks farther north as well and northeast up into the Big Bend and up into areas around the coastal bend, I should say,
02:07into southwestern Louisiana into Friday as well.
02:11And there will be some risk of strong thunderstorms here, some severe weather possible in areas east of I-35 tomorrow.
02:18Your rainfall totals, though, some areas seeing four to eight inches in progress down in the Rio Grande Valley
02:23and eight plus just north of that area east of San Antonio and west of Houston, southwest of Houston.
02:29So, big time concerns.
02:30The rain slides east and it does get shunted eastward more decisively on Friday afternoon and evening into the lower Mississippi Valley.
02:37So, a quick look at Saturday.
02:38Finally, some drier air enters the forecast and it will be warm, 86 in Dallas.
