Dr. Phil says there's a simple solution for getting Americans back into healthy eating habits ... and it's all about grocery shopping.

00:00I learned so much from our experts in this special, I was shocked, and the number one
00:08thing I learned is that we have no nutritional requirements or guidelines for the food assistance
00:16program.
00:17So we have the SNAP program, or food stamps, whatever it's called in different states,
00:22and I know it's referred to differently even though it's basically federal.
00:27We give them this assistance, which people need, of course, but there's no requirements.
00:34Only thing, you can't buy alcohol, but other than that, we have no nutritional requirements,
00:39so they can go spend this on things that have no nutritional value whatsoever.
00:46Doesn't help them, and in fact, hurts them, and another part that we have to own is we're
00:53not educating people as to what's in these foods and what they're eating.
01:00If you go back to the 60s, chronic disease among young people was like 2%.
01:07Now it's like 40%, and 70% of our young people couldn't even qualify for military service.
01:15They couldn't pass the physical.
01:17We have one of the sickest generations, a couple of generations, millennials and Gen
01:25X of anywhere, and certainly for a long time here, these are sick folks, and I'm not talking
01:33about just obesity.
01:34I'm talking about type 2 diabetes, essential hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, all types
01:42of things that are going on from a chronic disease standpoint, and it's costing this
01:48nation a fortune, and you mentioned that it's shaving years off of these kids' lives.
01:54How do you start to make the change in ways that are also affordable?
01:59There are some simple rules, and the experts that we have in the special talk about this,
02:04in any grocery store you go to, everybody thinks, well, healthier foods, non-processed
02:11foods, fresh foods, foods are really expensive, and the truth is they're not.
02:19It's just that you have to be willing to go home and prepare them, and if there's a list
02:24of ingredients on the food that you're eating, you shouldn't be eating it.
02:29If you will shop around the exterior of the grocery store instead of the interior of the
02:36grocery store, that's where you find healthy foods.
02:40Why?
02:41Everything around the perimeter has to be changed often because it's fresh.
02:46Everything in the middle of the store lasts forever, so they put it in the middle where
02:51it's harder to get to.
02:53Shop around the perimeter of the store.
02:56That's where all the fresh foods are.
02:58That's where you'll stay safe.
