00:00Austria has closed 24 small border crossings with Hungary and Slovakia in an effort to
00:05prevent foot-and-mouth disease from entering the country.
00:08Slovakia declared an emergency situation on Tuesday after the disease, commonly known
00:12as FMD, was detected on three farms.
00:16Hungary had its first outbreak of the highly infectious disease in 50 years on Wednesday.
00:21The disease, which poses no danger to humans, mostly affects cattle and other cloven-hoofed
00:26animals like swine, sheep and goats, causing fever and mouth blisters.
00:31Outbreaks often lead to trade restrictions and culls of some livestock.
00:35Austrian health authorities are conducting rigorous checks at the few open border crossings.
00:40Cars and pedestrians crossing on foot have to pass over an epidemic rug to prevent the
00:44virus from spreading.
00:46Police are also searching vehicles at border points for meat products which are restricted
00:50while this emergency persists.
