00:00If you look at the constitution, it expressly provides for an NMP to step down as an NMP
00:15and take part, join a political party and take part in elections.
00:21And if you look at the debates and the speeches around that time, including the background
00:26papers that were put forward, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew talked about potentially NMPs becoming
00:35ministers and certainly the constitutional documents clearly envisaged that NMPs could
00:45join political parties and take part in elections.
00:50And I think the final word really is the constitution itself.
00:53The way it's been drafted, that was the intention.
00:56And I can understand that was more than 30 years ago and not a lot of people would know
01:04the background or the provisions of the constitution.
01:08But the final word, I think, is that the constitution expressly provides for this framework.
01:16But we must make sure, of course, that while they are NMPs, they are independent.
01:23Parliament has got to choose men and women of character and who carry themselves properly.
01:29Well, in recent weeks, actually, I have been at NISUN to be able to see some of the challenges
01:55as well as learn from Minister, as well as MOS Faisal, as well as the other members of Parliament
02:00about some of the issues in the community.
02:03And really, it's putting myself forward to be able to serve in whatever capacity that's possible in the future.
02:12And I look forward to continuing my service for the country.
