Cartier jewels worn by royals, celebrities on display in new exhibition
An exhibition celebrating jewelry made by prestigious luxury goods company Cartier, including watches and tiaras, is about to open at London's V&A museum. Established by Louis-François Cartier in Paris in 1847, the family-run business went on to become a household name popular with royalty and stars alike. Making up some of the 350 jewels and objects on display is a flower brooch with a rare pink Williamson diamond that the late Queen Elizabeth II commissioned in 1953 and later wore at King Charles’ wedding to Diana. A rose clip brooch commissioned in 1938 and worn by Princess Margaret at her sister's coronation is also on display.

00:00is
00:30And we've got 350 jewels and objects on display to show you that from collections all over
00:51the world.
00:52But it's so lovely for people to see this today because I would love visitors to come
00:56to the V&A and get a sense of joy and beauty and I think it's a wonderful way to find happiness
01:02in design.
01:26Thank you so much.
01:52We're at the front of the streets of the city.
01:55There are lots of houses, so many of them are in their house.
02:00You know that he is from the city.
02:04We leave the streets here.
02:06We have one of ourrolhous houses.
02:09Oh the tours are from the city.
02:12They are all of our houses.
02:15And one of our houses that we just came to visit
02:19Well we've got this lovely London story with the Royal Family where Edward VII actually
02:34helped support Cartier set up in London in 1902, gave him the first Royal Warrant in
02:391904 and every generation of the Royal Family has issued a Royal Warrant since. So that's
02:44a great testament to the brilliance of the company and their designs.
03:14.
03:21.
03:26.
03:33.
03:37.
03:46.
03:47We have a wonderful tiara that was made in 1902 for the Countess of Wessex to wear to the
03:51coronation that year and we have the updated version of it being worn by Rihanna in a photo
03:56shoot from 2016. So over a hundred years later it's the reuse of this jewel of the garland
04:02style in a modern day futuristic setting and I think that's one of the geniuses of Cartier
04:08design. It never goes out of fashion, it's reusable in a modern context and we see it
04:13being worn by English aristocracy a hundred years ago and Hollywood royalty practically
04:18practically today.
04:19.
04:25.
04:30.
04:35.
04:38.
04:39.
04:40.
04:41.
04:42.
04:43.
04:44.
04:45.
04:46.
04:47.
05:15.
05:16.
05:17.
05:18.
05:19.
05:21.
05:22.
05:23.
05:24.
05:26.
05:29.

05:32Monaco. We have a beautiful necklace in rubies that was given to Elizabeth Taylor by her
05:38husband Mike Todd while she was in the swimming pool. Apparently she screamed with delight
05:42and pulled him in after her. I mean, who wouldn't, right? We have a wonderful watch that was given
05:48to Jackie Kennedy by her brother-in-law, later bought by Kim Kardashian. So again, that reuse
05:54and re-update of Cartier and even a watch from Tyler the Creator.
06:02Hang on.
06:32I think one of the special elements to Cartier is the timelessness of it. Historically, as
06:48a jewellery historian, I see how they've used lots of wonderful elements to come up
06:51with brilliant new ideas, but they've always pushed boundaries at every new point in history.
06:57They have a nod to their heritage today, yet they have come up with new jewels that really
07:01speak to the modern woman.
