Aux Etats-Unis, à l'automne 1959. L'Académie Welton accueille en son sein prestigieux les enfants des familles les plus fortunées du pays. Discipline de fer, devoir et travail acharné règnent sans partage sur l'institution, jusqu'à l'arrivée d'un nouveau professeur de littérature, un ancien élève de l'école, John Keating. Avec ses méthodes aussi personnelles qu'audacieuses, il tente d'enseigner à ses élèves la découverte de soi et l'amour de la poésie. Si les parents d'élèves et les autres enseignants n'approuvent guère ses méthodes, il réussit pourtant à susciter un grand intérêt pour la matière à ses élèves, et même au-delà de ses espérances...
