00:00Assalamu alaikum alaikum and welcome to sports room. I am Najeev al-Asnain and in this special
00:07sports room episode, our guest is David Warner. When you talk about modern day cricket,
00:13then he comes to his mind. This time he is debuting in PSL as captain of Karachi Kings.
00:19So we will talk a lot. Hi Dave, welcome to Karachi King, welcome to sports room.
00:24So excited to have you in the show. Thank you, appreciate it.
00:27Dave, your start of the PSL is finally playing and debuting as captain.
00:32We expect a lot from you, you know, highly populated city, Karachi, a lot of expectations.
00:38We want to win this PSL after five years.
00:42Yeah, look, for us you can have all the expectations in the world as you want, but as athletes and cricketers,
00:48we take each game at a time. Things will go your way, things won't go your way.
00:53For us it's about focusing one game at a time. Everyone wants you to win the trophy,
00:58but there's a lot of steps in the way and there's a process.
01:01So for us it's about doing the basics right and we're off to a good start at the moment.
01:06Yeah. You've played in every corner of the world. You've won a title for Hyderabad.
01:11So you're the right person who can compare PSL with the top leagues. What do you say?
01:16Yeah, look, I've only played one game. So, look, I think when you have the quality of talent that's in the country,
01:22you know, it's up there with all the other leagues in the world.
01:26And, you know, I don't like comparing different leagues. Each country has their own way of putting the entertainment on the screen.
01:33So, but the one thing that's important is that the people that are participating, we always give our 100% best and we try and entertain the fans.
01:42Yeah, that's true. You've joined Karachi Kings now, only one game I understand, but you've been looking from the outside as well.
01:49Do you think you see any talent, a youngster that could go a long way in international cricket?
01:55It's very early at the moment. But look, I think what you're going to see throughout this tournament is some high scores, especially here in Karachi.
02:04I think the wickets a little bit green, but that makes the ball skid on at night time as we saw.
02:10Like, you know, look at Kush the other night, like he applied himself and had that partnership with James Vince.
02:18And I think, you know, with what we've got in our team, I think we've got a very strong batting unit.
02:25And as a bowling unit, we always have to identify how we're going to take wickets early and how we're going to defend at the death.
02:34You've achieved so much in your life. But the last game when I was watching it, Abbas Afridi hitting it for a six.
02:41The excitement on your face. How much every victory means to you?
02:47Every game is like that. I think winning games isn't easy.
02:52You know, everyone says to me, you know, what's it like when you score a hundred?
02:56Yeah, it's great for me, but that's my job. I've got to do that for the team.
03:00And in this game, there's a lot of lows. There's not a lot of highs.
03:04You know, and as an individual, you look across the greats of the game.
03:09I'll say, I'll use Ricky Ponti example for an Australian cricket player.
03:13He scored 70 hundreds, international hundreds.
03:16Yeah.
03:17How many international games did he play?
03:19A lot.
03:20Well over 600.
03:21Yeah.
03:22So he had 70 good days.
03:24For himself, right? So for himself.
03:27But we don't play the game for ourselves. We play as a team, right?
03:31So he was part of a team that won over 60% of his games in his career.
03:36You know, so that's what the game is all about.
03:39And that's why we play the game. We absolutely love the game.
03:42Yeah, I don't understand why people in Pakistan love you so much
03:46because you have broken so many hearts.
03:49I mean, you have performed against us.
03:51You have over 2,700 runs, 2,788 to be exact in 43 games, 58 average, 10 centuries.
04:00What is it about Pakistan that brings the best out of you?
04:04Look, I think sometimes when you go through international cricket,
04:07you're always going to have a team.
04:09And it's not that you know,
04:11Oh, I've got the confidence I'm coming up against this team.
04:14It just so happens to pan out like that.
04:16Like, you know, in red ball cricket, you're good against this team.
04:20In white ball cricket, you're good against this team.
04:22So I guess when you play a lot of international cricket,
04:24there's going to be teams that you do favour.
04:26You know, and I look at Steve Smith where everyone goes,
04:30England, India, I think South Africa as well.
04:34He demolishes these teams.
04:36You have that killer instinct, that winning mentality.
04:39And in recent time, Pakistan team is struggling with that.
04:43We've got a great side.
04:45We've always been considered unpredictable.
04:48We could do something extraordinary on our day.
04:50But these days, there's a certain dip.
04:53What do you think we can do to improve that?
04:56I'm not here to tell, you know, Pakistani cricket how to improve.
05:01What I can say is it's an attitude.
05:05It's an attitude.
05:06It's how you rock up a training.
05:08It's how you play as an athlete.
05:10What do you do when you walk on that field?
05:13My mentality is to go out there, have a smile on my face,
05:16but I'm playing tough cricket.
05:17I want to dive around.
05:18I want to save runs.
05:19I go out there, I want to take the bowlers on.
05:22You know, I'm not a bowler, but I want to see bowlers be aggressive.
05:25That means take wickets.
05:27People have collapses.
05:28The Australian cricket team, you know, our middle order,
05:30for a long time, we were losing five, six wickets for not many.
05:35But we don't look at that.
05:36If you start looking at those little things,
05:38they become very big things.
05:40You know, so for me, it's about, you know,
05:43whoever's leading the team for now, for the next however long,
05:46whoever's coaching the team, you know, for the next five, ten years,
05:50the selectors, everyone has to buy into what we want to do.
05:54What's the common goal?
05:56You should have some idea of who your talent is,
05:59going into that four-year cycle, and you stick with that.
06:02But you have to identify your players,
06:04and you have to have a solid structure that is consistent.
06:08What I will say in Pakistan cricket is,
06:11you have so many bowlers that bowl 140 plus.
06:14That's incredible.
06:15You don't find that anywhere, you know?
06:18Yeah.
06:19And it's special.
06:20And that's one thing that Pakistani cricket has produced,
06:22is left arm fast bowling.
06:24Incredible over the years.
06:25Absolutely incredible.
06:26I've faced Wahab Riaz for a long time.
06:28Yeah.
06:29You know, I face...
06:30I know, he's very tall.
06:31I'm fine.
06:32But that's the problem.
06:34These days, we are losing because of our bowling,
06:37which is quite unreal to us as Pakistani fans.
06:41We are giving away runs in the ending part of the game,
06:45the death overs.
06:46That's not common here.
06:48Yeah, look, I think it's a skill set as well.
06:50Like, I think one of the hard things in one day cricket these days,
06:53is there's two brand new balls.
06:55You know, so...
06:56That has changed a lot.
06:57So reverse swing goes out of the way.
06:59In the subcontinent, you get reverse swing
07:01because the outfield is...
07:02the square is abrasive.
07:04And when you...
07:05You know, growing up as a kid,
07:06we always thought if you go to the subcontinent,
07:08it's very hard to score at the back end.
07:09Yeah, it is.
07:10Now it's different.
07:11You have brand new white ball,
07:13two brand new white balls.
07:14So the ball stays harder.
07:15Yeah, that's...
07:16Like the other night was the first time I've played here
07:18in white ball cricket.
07:20That outfield is rock hard.
07:22You know, there's a bit of dew.
07:23The wicket is unbelievable.
07:25So I really feel for the bowlers.
07:27Your area for margin is so small.
07:29So small.
07:30Okay, my next question is the perfect example
07:32of what we were talking about.
07:34The 2023 World Cup Final in India
07:37in front of a packed house
07:39and then Travis Head happened.
07:41How important was that victory?
07:42And I always say,
07:43it's not just the Australian team,
07:46it's the Australian mindset.
07:48Look, I...
07:49Take Travis out of the equation
07:51for the first part of it.
07:55The thing was,
07:56is what happens behind closed doors.
07:58There was a lot of planning.
08:00A lot of planning the night before
08:02about how the bowling structures were going to be.
08:04We stopped 30, 40 runs in the circle
08:07in the first 10 overs.
08:08We took wickets.
08:10We win the toss, we bowl first.
08:13What are we doing well in the final?
08:15We fielded well.
08:17What we had to do
08:19was if the bowlers bowled the correct lines
08:21and correct lengths,
08:22the fielders were in the right placement
08:24for where the ball would go
08:25if they bowled there.
08:27So it happened to be
08:28that we went a little bit closer
08:29as a fielding unit.
08:30You had Steve Smith,
08:31myself,
08:32Glenn Maxwell.
08:33And we had Manus Labashain.
08:34What we did as a pack,
08:35we came closer together.
08:37If you wanted to beat us,
08:39you had to get it right through the middle.
08:41Right?
08:42But we fielded like crazy.
08:44And we knew if we could outfield
08:46the opposition in the first 10 overs
08:47and save runs,
08:48that builds pressure,
08:49we take wickets.
08:50We go back to,
08:52I think it was 150 or 160 balls,
08:58I think,
08:59India didn't score a boundary.
09:00Yeah, that's the phase.
09:02Right?
09:03Yeah.
09:04Rohit Sharma came out
09:05and batted the way he does.
09:07I think Glenn Maxwell gets him out,
09:10I think.
09:11He tries to take him over cover
09:12and gets caught.
09:13Amazing catch.
09:15The turning point
09:16was that middle period
09:18where we didn't allow boundaries.
09:20To restrict India for 240
09:23in an international white ball game,
09:25not just a World Cup game.
09:26Yeah, it's extraordinary.
09:27Any white ball form of cricket
09:29in India
09:30is an incredible feat in itself.
09:32But a sea of blue,
09:34110,000 people
09:36and there's like 10 yellow shirts.
09:38We had the whole of the world,
09:40well not the whole of the world,
09:41the whole of the Indian nation
09:42against us.
09:44Yeah, yeah.
09:45So what do we have to lose?
09:46Nothing.
09:47We've won World Cups before.
09:49Plenty of World Cups.
09:50We know the big stage.
09:51When the odds are so far against you,
09:53you don't even think about the winning.
09:54You think about what's happening right now.
09:56The most pressure was on India.
09:58Now we can talk about Travis Head's innings.
10:01That was an unbelievable innings.
10:03You know,
10:04he's got such a crazy record against India.
10:06And we talk about records against oppositions.
10:09He just has this knack of scoring runs against India.
10:14Yeah.
10:15You know, and that innings was,
10:17you know, I think it will go down as one of his greatest innings.
10:20Of course.
10:21Of course.
10:22Very memorable.
10:23And their moments are,
10:24as a player,
10:25you'd want to be a part of.
10:26And that was really, really special.
10:28But that's the only way to silence the crowd,
10:30is by putting your best foot forward
10:33and doing what we did.
10:34Yeah, we did.
10:36Welcome back to SportsRoom.
10:37And David Warner is with us.
10:38He's with us.
10:39He's with us.
10:40He's with us.
10:41He's with us.
10:42He's with us.
10:43He's with us.
10:44He's with us.
10:45He's with us.
10:46He's with us.
10:47He's with us.
10:48He's with us.
10:49He's with us.
10:50He's with us.
10:51Let's talk about your achievements.
10:532015,
10:542023,
10:55two World Cups.
10:56Then,
10:572021,
10:58T20 World Cup.
10:59The Test Championship.
11:01You have done it all.
11:02You've achieved so much.
11:03Which trophy has the most emotional value for you?
11:07Look,
11:08when you say all that,
11:09it means I'm old.
11:10And I've played a lot of cricket.
11:11You're not.
11:12You're still hungry, by the way.
11:13I am always hungry.
11:14The thing is,
11:15I think,
11:16when you look back at your career,
11:17international career,
11:19not one moment stands out.
11:21But I think,
11:22the memories you create as a team.
11:25I played with an unbelievable squad.
11:28There was eight, nine guys there
11:31that I've played with for 10, 15 years.
11:35So for us,
11:36we're together as a pack mentality.
11:38It's a pack mentality.
11:40It's not an individual mentality.
11:41It's a pack mentality.
11:42What am I doing for my team?
11:44I'm doing what I can control.
11:46And as I say,
11:47it comes down to attitude.
11:48I control my attitude.
11:49And that's why,
11:51when I look back at World Cups
11:54and all the series I've been a part of
11:55and all the individual stuff that I've done,
11:57I can't pinpoint what I like
12:00and what I've done well.
12:01Because as a team,
12:03I've gone through,
12:04I've started with Ricky Ponting,
12:06I've started with Mike Hussey,
12:07I've started with Brett Lee,
12:08and I've finished my career with Pat Cummins,
12:10Josh Hazel,
12:11Mitchell Stark,
12:12Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon,
12:13you name them.
12:14It's that sort of thing.
12:15We are very excited to have you in Karachi Kings.
12:17But I'm here to help everyone.
12:21It's a beautiful thing.
12:22And that's why I say,
12:23cricket owes me nothing.
12:24But I owe the game.
12:26And that's why I want to be here today.
12:28Beautiful.
12:29Beautiful.
12:30Okay, you talked about your family.
12:32Your wife Candice is a top level athlete.
12:34I've seen her competitions,
12:36the reality show and all.
12:38So are the kids confused?
12:39Who's the superstar at home?
12:41I wish the girls were able to see,
12:43and they can,
12:44they can watch YouTube clips,
12:45but my wife was an Ironwoman as well.
12:47Yeah, I know.
12:48To have the mental strength
12:50to be an Ironwoman is incredible.
12:54They train three times a day,
12:55six times a week.
12:56Poof.
12:57And ever since I met my wife,
12:58I was up at five o'clock in the morning training,
13:00thinking, why?
13:01I play cricket at eight o'clock at night.
13:02Why am I getting up at five o'clock?
13:04It teaches you discipline.
13:06It taught me discipline.
13:08And from that day there,
13:10I've always thanked her.
13:11Not for coming into my life,
13:13but for showing me what it's like to be a professional athlete.
13:17Coming back to PSL and Karachi Kings,
13:19have you met the owner?
13:20Because Salman Iqbal is so passionate.
13:23He's so excited about his game,
13:26and he gives full energy, full support.
13:28What's your impression?
13:30Yeah, I have met Salman Baye,
13:33and he's just a great, great human being.
13:36You know, I think what he brings to the table
13:39is that energy and excitement.
13:41And I love that.
13:42I love that.
13:43And that's what, for me, the passion from an owner,
13:46that's what I take out onto the field with the guys.
13:49And I think what we need to understand is that there is pressure on us
13:54to win every game and lift the trophy,
13:56but what he brings to us is comfort, relaxation,
14:00and we just go out there and do our business.
14:02And that's what I love.
14:03I love just letting someone just allow us to do what we do.
14:07And that's exactly what I see in Salman.
14:10This time, this season, we are very excited
14:12because there is a proper balance in the team.
14:15Good fastballers, great batting, a little bit of spin.
14:19So we have everything.
14:20This first game, we won the game.
14:22This was third successful run chase in PSL history.
14:26But bowling struggled a bit.
14:28It was not that disciplined.
14:30What would you say?
14:31I wouldn't say it wasn't disciplined.
14:33I think it's the first game.
14:35Yeah.
14:36It could be nerves.
14:38The ball was swinging a fair bit.
14:40The wicket was green.
14:41As I said, the outfield was fast.
14:43We did bowl a lot of extras and we gave a couple of free hits,
14:47but that's just the first game.
14:50What I will say is that I keep saying to the guys,
14:53take the aggressive approach.
14:54I want us to take wickets.
14:55I want us to pitch the ball up.
14:57We lost early wickets in the power play,
14:59but I wanted us to keep being, you know, aggressive and positive.
15:04Take the game on.
15:05I'd rather be bowled out for 80, 90 chasing 230 without not going for it.
15:12You know?
15:13And we always talk about it in cricket.
15:14If you have two batsmen in at the end of the day,
15:16you're going to win most games.
15:18And, you know, fortunate enough for us, we got across the line.
15:21And it's the first game.
15:24So we've got a lot to work on.
15:26Dave, how difficult is for you coming and joining a team as captain?
15:31You know the international stars, obviously, but the young guys, the local players.
15:35How do you identify?
15:37How do you learn about them?
15:39Yeah, for me, coming in, you know, as an international and, you know,
15:45first-time captain in the PSL.
15:48There's a lot of pressure on myself because, you know,
15:51when you go into another country and you take over as captain
15:53and there's other people that could be, you know, a captain, there's pressure.
15:57And with your sort of reputation, you know?
16:00But the thing is, it's important for me just to make sure that, you know,
16:04for us and the guys, we're doing our utmost to be the best that we can.
16:10I think for us, if we can find that balance of,
16:15we've got a lot of batting in our team, right?
16:18But it's the balance of how we structure that batting.
16:21And you talk about the balance that we have.
16:23Yes, we do.
16:24But we've got six, seven bowling options.
16:26Yeah.
16:27So you've got to master that on the field as well, you know?
16:30And I'm a believer of backing your bowlers, right?
16:35So some teams I've seen have eight bowlers.
16:38One guy gets hit for, you know, he bowls two overs, goes for 30,
16:41but he might be your number one bowler.
16:43You have to go back to support that guy because he knows what he's doing.
16:47Still early days for you in PSL,
16:49but who do you think is the tough opposition in these teams?
16:54No one.
16:55Wow.
16:56We don't look at the opposition like that.
16:58We look at the opposition as what their players are
17:00and how we're going to tackle them.
17:02Yes, everyone's got great bowling, great batting,
17:04but only we can control who's the better team.
17:09We like to think that we're the best team.
17:11But every team at the moment is equal, you know?
17:14I don't like to say who's got the better team, the better structure,
17:17because every game's going to change as well,
17:20because we're going to be playing on nice wickets,
17:22then we're going to be playing on turning wickets.
17:24You know, so there's going to be a lot of, you know,
17:27there could be changes, you know, with the team.
17:29So at the moment, I just see us as focusing on the next game and no one else.
17:36Dave, I've seen foreign players struggle in subcontinent conditions a lot.
17:41What is your approach?
17:43How are you so successful right from the beginning?
17:45I think it's a mindset of adapting to what is required on each wicket.
17:52Like, you've got so many different venues, right?
17:57So throughout my career, I've had to work out what's the best avenue for me to score runs.
18:05You know, speaking to guys like Varenda Sawag, Gautam Gambia, A.B. De Villiers, Kevin Peterson,
18:13these guys, when I first, you know, started in the IPL, that was what it was about.
18:20You know, I got the opportunity to play with the greats of the game.
18:23And they taught me about what it's required to play in the subcontinent.
18:27And I took that and adapted and I haven't looked back since.
18:31Okay, last question. Under your leadership of Karachi Kings, where are you going to take this team?
18:38What is the next level for this franchise?
18:40Look, for myself, I just want to make sure that the guys are having fun.
18:46I always talk about, we're in this bubble for five weeks.
18:52We have to have fun. If you're not here to have fun, then go home.
18:58What's our one common goal? It's to win.
19:01But if you don't have fun, you're not going to take that on the field.
19:04You're not going to enjoy your cricket.
19:06You know, and that's why I always say, it's important to smile.
19:10It's important to be humble and be grateful for what we have.
19:13And we have the ability to play cricket.
19:15What's our one common goal? It's to win.
19:19But if you don't have fun, you're not going to take that on the field.
19:22You're not going to enjoy your cricket.
19:24You know, and that's why I always say, it's important to smile.
19:28It's important to be humble and be grateful for what we have.
19:31And we have the ability to play cricket.
19:33We have the ability to be here at the PSL. Enjoy it.
19:36Win, lose or draw, enjoy it.
19:38Because if you bring that attitude, the rest is history.
19:42Thank you so much, Dave. We've learned so much from you, your attitude.
19:46Thank you for entertaining us for so many years.
19:49I don't want to say much more because then you'll say I'm making you look old.
19:52You're still hungry and you're still going.
19:55I wish you very best of luck.
19:56Thank you very much.
19:57Thank you very much.
20:12Thank you very much.
20:15Allah Hafiz.
