Transkrip
00:00:00Hello and welcome to Long Beach, a circuit soaked in history, speed and heartbreak.
00:00:11And today the spotlight is burning bright on Andretti Global.
00:00:17From Andretti to Al Junior to Dixon.
00:00:22Old school and new school.
00:00:26This is the OG of American street racing.
00:00:29This track has so much history.
00:00:31With the checkered flag, it's different.
00:00:33Jump!
00:00:36Green, green, green.
00:00:38So yeah, who wants next?
00:00:41Who wants street cred?
00:00:43Let's go, Warren!
00:00:45Because there's only one place to get it.
00:00:48Welcome to Long Beach.
00:00:53Welcome to Long Beach indeed.
00:00:55Colton, Hertha and Carl Kirkwood locking out the front row.
00:01:01Honda power surging through the streets of Southern California.
00:01:04But the question remains, can Andretti finish what they've started?
00:01:10Well, Hertha, the Southern California native, has danced with destiny here before and crashed out in pursuit of it.
00:01:18While Carl Kirkwood returns as a previous winner, looking to prove that 2023 was no fluke.
00:01:27Together, they lead the charge for Honda, who've owned this circuit in recent years, chasing their seventh win in eight years at Long Beach.
00:01:36But, as we know, in IndyCar, nothing is guaranteed.
00:01:40The walls are closed, the margins are razor thin, and the pass doesn't forgive.
00:01:45And for Andretti, this isn't just another Sunday.
00:01:48It's a chance to flip the script, silence the doubts, and finally turn promise into performance.
00:01:55Or will the streets of Long Beach serve up another twist?
00:01:59And if you watched or followed warm-up, you'll know that Colton Hertha, well, he was in trouble again, having contact with Jacob Abel on the pit lane entry.
00:02:13And that brought out the red flag.
00:02:15He damaged his car.
00:02:16He had to sit out five minutes for causing that red flag.
00:02:20And already he starts today on the back foot.
00:02:25Now, for Alex Pillow, after scoring wins in the first two races of the season, he's looking to continue his winning streak and become just the fourth driver since 1979 to open the season with three or more wins.
00:02:43Who was the last driver to do it?
00:02:45Well, you don't have to look back too far in the record books to find out.
00:02:49It was Scott Dixon in 2020.
00:02:52So, just six drivers have won Long Beach from the top spot.
00:02:59Can Carl Kirkwood do it today?
00:03:03He was resplendent yesterday in qualifying.
00:03:07He will lead the field to green.
00:03:11And Andretti are a real powerhouse when you look at those two wins for Alexander Rossi in 18 and 19.
00:03:19They know what they're doing around him.
00:03:22I like that.
00:03:23I like that.
00:03:23One of the things I'm hoping for, you're going to do really well.
00:03:26I'm going to buy you a beer.
00:03:27And then you're going to do these facial expressions for me just one time.
00:03:30Just for you.
00:03:31Just for you because you're my friend.
00:03:32But no, look, the deck 7G Chevy feels good.
00:03:34The printer wagon, as we like to call it.
00:03:36But we'll see what we've got.
00:03:36We'll just execute and see where we end up on the race.
00:03:40Awesome.
00:03:40Thanks, Scott.
00:03:40Good luck, buddy.
00:03:41We're going to just keep shimmying along here.
00:03:44One of the things that's so cool about Long Beach, it is packed.
00:03:46It does make my grid walk a little bit tougher.
00:03:48We are here.
00:03:50Nicholas Chavez.
00:03:51How are you doing, brother?
00:03:52Good, man.
00:03:52Good.
00:03:52Going to be driving the two-seater.
00:03:54Yes, sir.
00:03:54First IndyCar experience.
00:03:56What are you feeling?
00:03:57I'm so excited, man.
00:03:58This is an unreal event.
00:03:59The energy here is totally crazy.
00:04:01I'm so stoked, man.
00:04:03Who are you cheering for today?
00:04:03Just give us two drivers.
00:04:05It's got to be Marcus Ericsson and Scott Dixon.
00:04:07Both great guys.
00:04:08You know, they're going to go fast today.
00:04:10And actually, right here, entered, joining the party.
00:04:13Marcus, what's it going to take to win the race today?
00:04:16Tire strategy is going to be important for sure.
00:04:18Looking after those greens in the beginning and then being fast on the primaries.
00:04:22But there's a lot of good cars out there.
00:04:24The Andretti car, the Bryant Honda, it's been good all weekend.
00:04:26So I'm excited.
00:04:27It's going to be good.
00:04:28Awesome.
00:04:28Have a great day, buddy.
00:04:30We're going to try and hurry up somewhat quickly to Colton Herta, who has been rapid this weekend.
00:04:36And actually, the whole Andretti Global team, sorry, I just catch myself there.
00:04:40Rob Edwards, strategist for the 26th, walking by me.
00:04:44They've been flying.
00:04:45First, second, fifth.
00:04:47I can see them.
00:04:48They can see me.
00:04:49They're coming.
00:04:50Here we go.
00:04:53Mr. Herta.
00:04:54You found me.
00:04:54I found you.
00:04:56Dan, I'm so happy that you made it.
00:04:58What a travel trip you've had.
00:04:59How's it going today?
00:05:00Good.
00:05:00Good to see you.
00:05:01You too.
00:05:03Colton, come back here just one second.
00:05:04What's it going to take for you to win this race today?
00:05:08A lot, man.
00:05:09It's 95 perfect laps.
00:05:11We've got to take care of these red tires to try and get into the window where we can use the black tires efficiently.
00:05:17That and this is one of the tracks that we use the most battery power on through this system.
00:05:22So that gets a lot of use.
00:05:23And I think you can use it quite effectively how you use Overtake.
00:05:27Best of luck today.
00:05:28And Kevin Lee is with his teammate.
00:05:29Well, last year, Kyle Kirkwood followed Colton Herta the entire time at Toronto for a 1-2 for Andretti.
00:05:36Switch this time around.
00:05:37How do you race each other?
00:05:39You know, I think last year at Toronto, we needed a win, right?
00:05:42So we're going to do everything in our power to get a win.
00:05:44And that's going to be a little bit of the same here today.
00:05:46But they're going to allow us to race.
00:05:48It's going to be a race.
00:05:49And it's going to be whoever is the best driver comes out on top.
00:05:52Of course, there's a lot of other drivers here that we keep at bay.
00:05:55Polo is just behind us.
00:05:57And there's a lot of other guys, too, that are heavy hitters that will be trying to take over that top spot.
00:06:02But hopefully, we can maintain it.
00:06:03That's the goal.
00:06:03It's to get through that first stop.
00:06:04That's the crucial one.
00:06:06And then from there on out, hopefully, it's clean sailing.
00:06:09You say that in IndyCar, but it never is clean sailing.
00:06:12The year that I won two years ago, we thought it was going to be clean sailing.
00:06:15It definitely was not.
00:06:16So hopefully, we keep all the wheels on this thing.
00:06:19It's fast.
00:06:19It's consistent.
00:06:20It's clean.
00:06:20We have good stops.
00:06:21And everything works out well.
00:06:22All three poles for Kyle Kirkwood on street courses.
00:06:25And he's won the previous two, including here.
00:06:28Will.
00:06:29Thanks, my friends.
00:06:30We are about to go street racing and street fighting here on the streets of Long Beach.
00:06:36And, of course, a burgeoning and wonderful art scene here in California.
00:06:41Stephanie Johansson, former IndyCar and Formula One driver,
00:06:44now applies his trade as an artist, decided to make us something beautiful.
00:06:53Well, some nice touches here this weekend.
00:06:57We've already seen a flyover consisting of helicopters from the L.A. County Fire,
00:07:03L.A. City Fire and Cal Fire, L.A. County Sheriff and L.A. Police Department
00:07:08and the Long Beach Police Department as well.
00:07:11As first responders, 27 of them from various departments will ride on the back of pickup trucks
00:07:18along with the NTT IndyCar Series drivers in the pre-race parade.
00:07:22That happened earlier on.
00:07:24And that is all in memory of the Pasadena Fires here earlier in the year.
00:07:30Right.
00:07:31Let's look ahead to what we can expect in this race.
00:07:36David has got in touch on X.
00:07:38You can get in touch on Blue Sky and X at Tongame or using the Sky IndyCar hashtag saying
00:07:43who's going to win this race.
00:07:45Well, I think it's going to be an Andretti driver.
00:07:48But will you count out the likes of Alex Polo, who starts in third place,
00:07:54has never won a round here.
00:07:56Then you've got the likes of Felix Rosenquist as well in the Mayor Shank car
00:08:01with the Chip Ganassi Alliance there in fourth place.
00:08:06Well, I think we're going to see a grid rundown
00:08:09before we go back to Will Buxton and co at Fox.
00:08:14But qualifying was really interesting yesterday.
00:08:18It didn't go the way of Team Penske.
00:08:20But for Andretti locking out the front row,
00:08:23they're looking to do what they did in Toronto last year with a 1-2.
00:08:28Scott McLaughlin, the only Chevrolet in that fast six.
00:08:32Pato Award, well, he was balked.
00:08:35So was Nolan Siegel by his teammate Christian Lungard,
00:08:38who would have transferred through to the fast six
00:08:41but caused that red flag, had that shot.
00:08:43He's got a new car and a different gearbox as well going into the race.
00:08:52The Grand Prix of Long Beach has been running since 1975.
00:08:57Began as a Formula 5000 race,
00:08:59then welcomed Formula 1 to Long Beach
00:09:02before IndyCar made it its home in 1984.
00:09:06It is one of the most historic,
00:09:08one of the most challenging street races on Earth.
00:09:11Al Unser Jr. with six wins to his name,
00:09:13the most successful driver around here.
00:09:16Mario Andretti got four wins between F1 and IndyCar.
00:09:20Now, one guy who got here a little bit early this week,
00:09:22Pato Award, who went to make some new friends.
00:09:25Denzel, Pato, nice to meet you, man.
00:09:40Nice to meet you. Welcome.
00:09:41Have you ridden in one or driven a McLaren before?
00:09:45Uh, besides playing a video game in first person, no.
00:09:48Okay.
00:09:48They supposedly only made 765 of these.
00:09:51Which number is this?
00:09:52So this is the first one ever made.
00:09:55Oh, that's pretty cool.
00:09:56Car's gonna be good.
00:09:57Nobody gonna steal it.
00:09:59But yeah, man, you see them?
00:10:00Look at that.
00:10:00That's on the big board.
00:10:01This is great.
00:10:02Fun fact, I played linebacker on defense.
00:10:05I quit because I kept getting hit by guys that were twice my size.
00:10:09Those guns too big for the sleeves?
00:10:14No, no, no, no, man.
00:10:16I like to call this my workout shirt, man.
00:10:17I like to go to work.
00:10:18Nice and smooth.
00:10:24And the Indy car driving, they always go left.
00:10:27No, we go right.
00:10:31Man, this is unlike anything I've done.
00:10:34And relax.
00:10:35Oh, f***.
00:10:37Man, I can't even walk.
00:10:39I'm not even flexing.
00:10:41I'm excited to give you your first introduction to a McLaren.
00:10:48You're in for a treat for sure.
00:10:51Oh, that's dangerous.
00:10:55How much is this worth?
00:10:56They say 765, but I call BS because it's 765 to the wheels.
00:11:01Yeah.
00:11:01So that makes it like 800.
00:11:07Feels good, huh?
00:11:08That was different, man.
00:11:10What goes through your mind when you're driving so fast?
00:11:13Man, you know what?
00:11:14In the car, everything slows down.
00:11:16And it's just like, it's you in the car.
00:11:19Nothing in life just gives me that same rush.
00:11:23I feel like we bonded today.
00:11:24Now I've got another buddy to cheer for, you know?
00:11:27And I got somebody to cheer for also, man.
00:11:28Yeah.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:30Yeah.
00:11:30Pato O'Ward rolls off today in ninth place.
00:11:36The man who took second place in the championship after a podium at Thermal last time out.
00:11:41Where will he finish today?
00:11:42You'll have to stay tuned to find out.
00:11:44We'll be right back.
00:11:50Well, for 2025, they've increased the distance by five laps.
00:11:56So we're going to get 90 laps around this 11 turn temporary street course.
00:12:02It's 1.968 miles, lots of different surface changes and not your conventional street track as well with the 90 rights, 90 lefts and fast flowing corners, as well as Shoreline Boulevard that we see on the screen there.
00:12:17We think it's going to be a two-stopper with a two-stopper with quite a two-stopper comes into play if we get an early caution like we did in St. Pete.
00:12:29So the majority of the field are going to start on the alternate tyre, the green sidewalled Wyoli tyre.
00:12:37That's the same tyre that we had in St. Petersburg for the alternate.
00:12:42They've got to run the primary as well, the black sidewalled harder tyre, but we think it's going to be a black race.
00:12:47They ran the greens in the warm-up.
00:12:49They said they were horrible.
00:12:51Real question marks over whether or not they can go 23, 25 laps to make it a two-stopper.
00:12:56We don't think they can.
00:12:58So the whole field really bar a handful of drivers starting on those greens.
00:13:04They're going to ship them quickly and run the blacks to the end of the race.
00:13:08You don't want to take your medicine at the end of the race having started on the blacks and having to run the greens at the end.
00:13:15But if we have a first-lap caution, you know, the field will still come in, but it brings the two-stopper back into play.
00:13:23So keep an eye on that two or three-stopper.
00:13:26Lots of question marks around strategy.
00:13:28There always is in IndyCar.
00:13:29If it's a big fuel save, who do you start to look towards?
00:13:32Scott Dixon.
00:13:33But he didn't have the best at qualifying, neither did Joseph Newgarden, nor Will Power.
00:13:39Scott Dixon down in 14th.
00:13:40Will Power just ahead of him in 13th.
00:13:42Joe New, who's won here in the past, behind the pair of them.
00:13:49So who starts on the black tires?
00:13:51Christian Lungard, Scott Dixon, Kiffin Simpson, Stingray, Rob, and then right at the back, Robert Schwartzman and Santino Ferrucci.
00:13:59The rest are all starting on the green side-walled tires.
00:14:05So Ganassi have seven wins around here.
00:14:08Team Penske have seven wins around here.
00:14:10Andretti have six wins, but they produce four of the last six Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach race winners and the runner-up finishers in three consecutive years.
00:14:22So all the money is on Andretti and Honda.
00:14:25The Chevrolet, just one win in the last seven races around here.
00:14:30Pato Awards, statistically, this is his worst circuit.
00:14:34Average finish of around 15th.
00:14:36So can he move forward in the papaya?
00:14:39He is the lead Arrow McLaren machine, just behind Alexander Rossi, who's enjoying himself at Ed Carpenter Racing.
00:14:48But let's head back now to Long Beach for the race start.
00:14:58This event is so much more than just a race.
00:15:02It is a veritable festival of motorsports.
00:15:06So much action from the start of the weekend all the way through.
00:15:09A roaring crescendo through to today's action and the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
00:15:16Time to throw to your Acura starting grid for the 2025 Grand Prix of Long Beach.

00:22:14kristian lungard starting in 12. those six have a chance of making it a two stopper if they get
00:22:20some help with cautions to shorten the soft stint and it includes scott dixon last year's winner
00:22:24the rest on the soft green side wells want to get rid of them as soon as possible because they don't
00:22:29last very long and those up front are changing at the first caution if it stays green they'll
00:22:34change between laps five and twelve to jack harvey one of the guys i'm really going to pay attention
00:22:39to today it's not a surprise it's willpower he's had 18 starts here he's the third best average
00:22:45finish of about six and a half so a guy who was the highest move on the previous weekend at thermal
00:22:50he's my guy i'm watching today with the driver's eye camera beautiful innovation for this weekend
00:22:57we'll see that all the way through the race the acura pace car leads them down the back stretch
00:23:03into that treacherous turn nine where we've seen people go off all the way through this weekend
00:23:08anticipation now rising for the 50th running of this race the accurate pace car will lead them
00:23:16to green which one of these 27 drivers of the 2025 ntt indy car series will take the checkered flag
00:23:25today to place their names alongside the immortals of this sport 50 years we've been racing here there is
00:23:33this perhaps no more legendary street circuit on earth the pace car pulls in they will line up two
00:23:40by two and on this phenomenal legendary circuit we roll to green and at the grand prix of long beach we
00:23:46are now racing Kyle Kirkwood leading his teammate down the straight and down towards turn one high
00:23:54speed and heavy braking as they open up and try to make that move immediately Kyle Kirkwood with the
00:23:59advantage but further back they are three wide look like marcus ericsson jamming his way in there
00:24:05alexander rossi with a really nice move in that light blue and yellow splendor card that's a huge jump
00:24:11from rossi driving for acr you see a pair of mclarens a trio of mclarens all lined up there single
00:24:16file a little bit of a defensive move there but so far no incident Kyle Kirkwood doing exactly what he
00:24:22needed to do off the line there no incidents between himself and his teammate he said as new
00:24:27garden has a look up the inside of dixon gets that done with a lovely instinctive move on the opening
00:24:32lap scott dixon was looking pretty defensive on that straightaway now he gets challenged again or
00:24:37is challenging again to the outside as rasmussen made a move on the inside of kiffin simpson big dive
00:24:44as we see now new guard trying to defend against dixon he's on those harder tires not able to mount the
00:24:49attack a lot of desperation early on if you're 10th or farther back especially for drivers like
00:24:56dixon and new guard used to the sharp end of this grid they know they have to make positions early
00:25:01new garden said that was the goal make passes be aggressive there's only one option meanwhile two
00:25:07young american drivers looking to become two-time winners here at long beach as alexander rossi defends
00:25:13from marcus erickson former teammates
00:25:20if rossi i'm trying to i'm trying to figure out if he was trying to defend from erickson or if
00:25:24he was trying to attack hello this guy has the bit between his teeth was confident coming into the
00:25:29weekend guys but then after practice one it was all sorts of sideways the car was not there the grip
00:25:34was not there they threw the kitchen sink at it for qualifying and it seems to be working alexander
00:25:39rossi across has won here twice before but a big salary payment in the offseason to bring him into
00:25:46this team ed carpenter racing to deliver these sort of quarterback-like performances leading his
00:25:51organization forward methodically i talked with his father this morning about exactly that how they just
00:25:57want to keep taking one step at a time and growing the program with alexander's leadership he's doing it
00:26:03today david malucas in the aj foyd entry the number four car having a good look at the back of marcus
00:26:08armstrong in the meyer shank and when we talk about my shank felix rosenquist sitting p3 at the moment
00:26:14has taken that position over from alex polo who's dropped two positions from the start your championship
00:26:19leader rosenquist of course on the pole here last year and for all these drivers james that have started
00:26:24on the soft tire you are settling into tire conversation conversation but not joseph newgaard
00:26:31he is not conserving anything he is dropping those softs immediately and going right to the hard tire
00:26:37going to try to make it now on two more stops you have to do at least two laps on each compound of tire
00:26:42they got through the two laps on the softs with joseph newgaard they came immediately in that's a bold
00:26:47strategy call but from 15th place townsend i like it let's roll the dice if you do the same as the rest of
00:26:53the cars you're not going anywhere but you might make a couple spots up that could be a race winning
00:26:58move when we get down 50 60 laps in crucially puts him into clean air at the back of the field all by
00:27:04himself to go and set some laps jack no i think that's a great move there the pit stop is about
00:27:0838 seconds here so that's more than half a lap the team have just put him in clear air for what is going
00:27:14to be a lot of laps here they're going to be critical this outlap is going to be critical but i actually
00:27:18really like this move from the uh from the two car there and i can tell you from experience i mean
00:27:26clean air is king around long beach you can have such a huge pace advantage as we're on board now
00:27:32with padua ward trying to line up who's that in front of them clear yeah got that deal done nicely done
00:27:40into turn one and what a great view that fox driver's eye camera giving us the front row seat to
00:27:45a great move the other thing i can appreciate is on the south end of the circuit the sun is
00:27:50really popping a little bit of cloud cover still on the north end of the track this part but
00:27:55the track temperature is going to be rising very quickly here and that'll make it that much more
00:28:00difficult for drivers on the soft tires which is everybody in the top 10 right now that joseph new
00:28:06garden stop now putting some of his rivals into mind of whether they should do the same graham
00:28:11rahal and uh rasmussen have made the stop new garden should get past them on the exit uh of pit lane
00:28:17and it looks from my map as though he's done that so he's out ahead of rahal and rasmussen how many
00:28:23more will come in and stop this time around
00:28:30now it's that phase of the race where the drivers that started on the softs really have to think about
00:28:34taking care of those tires you kind of started talking about it townsend these things have to last as
00:28:39long as possible the window opens around five but if you can get to 12 15 maybe even 18 that could
00:28:46really set you up well if the pace doesn't drop and you get to lap 32 on the soft tires i think
00:28:51the truth is nobody really knows the gamble that new garden team penske made is that nobody will be
00:28:57able to make it on two stops today because of the soft tires not lasting but we've been wrong before
00:29:03the drivers and teams have been wrong before and the only way to find out is to do what kirkwood and
00:29:08heard and rosenquist are doing stay out and just wait for the feel wait for the the stopwatch to
00:29:15tell you whether or not you're having an issue on pace and that the degradation is too much
00:29:20and the big thing for new garden right now is he does have to save fuel he's got two more stops
00:29:24essentially everyone else still three he's got a really he's got that clean air he's got to go fast
00:29:29but he has got to make that fuel number and who's the fastest man on track right now guys
00:29:34is joseph new garden a one minute 9.0 that's a second and a half faster than your race leader
00:29:40kyle kirkwood that tells you they're already starting there we go fall off that's malukas just
00:29:45we saw diving into pit lane there
00:29:49and hurt is in as well
00:29:53trying to take one and a half turns of front wing out of the car we see scott mclaughlin on the decks
00:29:58imaging machine he is in and out joseph new garden has set a trend doing it from 15. these are the
00:30:04guys up at the front making this move how does kirkwood react how does oh very close herta and
00:30:10mclaughlin side by side and it's a long stretch down that funnels on the way out mclaughlin was ahead
00:30:16but because it's a curved pit line i think colton was driving a shorter distance advantage hurt at the
00:30:22exit careful here though it's so easy to lock up on full tanks and cold hard tires at the end of
00:30:27the street this is going to be a battle on this l lab to see who can capitalize tires are cold car
00:30:33is heavy it's a great point the first two corners are literally like driving in the rain it's that
00:30:38slippery heavy cars low grip and guys right behind them on the racetrack yeah joseph new guard he is
00:30:46already caught up with the drivers that were running in the top five and the one thing the drivers were
00:30:51telling us earlier this weekend this harder tire takes longer to bring it in new gardens tires will
00:30:56already be up to temperature he'll have the pace the ball as he goes for the move immediately up and
00:31:01through a wonderful move from scott mclaughlin to take that position away from colton hurda as now
00:31:06new garden will be catching them both
00:31:12pullo in look at new guard there he is colton hurda under pressure big time from team penske they are
00:31:18attacking at just the right time you called it hitch new garden
00:31:25brilliantly making the early stop work and herter sideways trying to get the power down out of turn
00:31:3011 down the long stretch into turn one can he make the move can he do what his teammate scott
00:31:35mclaughlin did just a few corners to go as now everyone barreling out of pit lane and these guys with
00:31:42the tires up the temperature right into the middle of it mclaughlin's going to get massively held up here by
00:31:46erickson as he gets a little little touch there new garden into the back of hurda now mclaughlin down
00:31:52the inside teammates side by side into five this is not a good passing spot oh erickson locks up again
00:31:58new guard now almost spins out trying to get to the throttle early this the difference between tires
00:32:04that are called tires that are up to temperature as new garden knows he has to find his way through
00:32:08and does it perfectly instinctively and straight away this is absolute madness and chaos looks like
00:32:15gordon ramsey out there with all the hatchet jobs going on they are chopping each other everywhere and
00:32:20look who is in pit lane kyle kirkwood race leader so armstrong takes over at the head of the field
00:32:29lungard who started on the hard tire currently sits p2 but where will kirkwood come out how much time has he
00:32:36lost and where does it put him amongst all of these drivers who now do have their tires up to
00:32:41temperature and will be able to fight to take that advantage immediately and instinctively we wait for
00:32:47them to head down shoreline drive
00:32:52and here comes rossi blending back out just next to new garden
00:32:58so kirkwood managed to make it stick all this fighting back and forth held these guys up rossi now
00:33:04at the front of this train as we see car going a little oh that's coming out of pit lane that's
00:33:08rius vk but look at that train behind the 20 of rossi he's got a lineup of cars with push to pass
00:33:15trigger fingers and warm tires here comes now the power down the inside power inside of old ward
00:33:22gray how up and having a look at malukas
00:33:29can't get it done on david malukas
00:33:34but the battle right now for the de facto lead is that of kirkwood as ericsson has a look at rossi
00:33:39they get very close and almost touch
00:33:47so lungard now leads lungard who started this race on hard tires from dixon who started this
00:33:52race on hard tires from nolan siegel who has been battling food poisoning
00:33:57is pretty sick today but they filled him up with fluids and sent him out
00:34:01marcus ericsson looks to have a nice run on alexander rossi rossi defense to the inside
00:34:07ericsson fades out they'll stay single file boy marcus ericsson got really chewed up on that
00:34:12sequence of pit stops there is the leader christian lungard 2.4 seconds clear 2.5 now of scott
00:34:21dixon and he's not going to be pitting for a while t-bell he started on those hearts so he's just
00:34:26running and this is cal kirkwood he managed to get out ahead of alex pillow essentially leading
00:34:31him making making him one of the leaders well this is it might be an alternate trying to confirm
00:34:36this is it the man who led the start of this race alex pillow came in made the stop started p3 fell
00:34:42back at the start but through this first pit cycle which came so early in this race pillow's been able
00:34:47to jump everyone around him and is now on the back of the man who started from pole position who's
00:34:52trying to get those hard tires now up to temperature if there's one guy you do not want in your
00:34:58mirrors in 2025 it is alex pillow he has won both races so far this season clinical tactician a
00:35:06masterful racer and looming large behind the pole sitter this will be fun to watch james over the
00:35:11next few laps because there's been no question this weekend that kyle kirkwood in the whole andretti
00:35:16team fastest team over one lap on new tires the question is how are you after five ten fifteen
00:35:23laps that's where i think alex below and chip ganassi and the team penske drivers might have the
00:35:29advantage yeah they've done it so many times in the past and below if you can't get it done in those
00:35:33first two three laps after a stop now for him it's all about saving fuel and trying to go longer in the
00:35:40next round so it's lungard who leads having started on the hard two different strategies here
00:35:47kirkwood down in eight from pole below just behind him will keep you abreast of everything
00:35:57well this race has burst into excitement already 10 laps in and we've got our typical indycar split
00:36:05strategy you've got those that started on the alternates dumping those they are gonna have the fuel save
00:36:13to do it in two more stops stopping that early the drivers that haven't stopped and that's the likes
00:36:22of lungard dixon kiffin simpson stingray rob santino ferrucci and robert schwartzman they are on the black
00:36:31side wall tire they are gonna go long they're gonna do it on a two stop with two more stops to go
00:36:37but how limited are they going to be when they put the greens on and that's going to be the big
00:36:43question mark because they may have to switch to three stops the problem with making an extra stop
00:36:49here at long beach is the pit loss in terms of the delta time is really high it's a really long
00:36:57pit out so if you have to make an extra stop three and a half you're in real bother so all of these
00:37:06runners now that are on the black side wall tire that stopped early their big conundrum is hitting
00:37:13the fuel number if they don't hit the fuel number they're going to be making an extra stop the ones who
00:37:19didn't stop the ones who have stayed out started on the blacks their big conundrum is can they make the
00:37:25greens work later on in the race if they can't they're gonna have to make an extra stop so this
00:37:30is going to be seriously interesting we're only 11 laps in to 90 laps here at long beach as we see
00:37:38here now into turn one that's alexander rossi getting squeezed and i think he will power there with a huge
00:37:49move pato award couldn't follow through and now alexander rossi the bit of a cork in the bottleneck
00:37:58he doesn't look as comfortable at this stage in the race on the black sidewall tire on the harder
00:38:04tire than he did on the greens on the softer tire that was a big bold move by willpower down into turn
00:38:11one rossi now with his mirrors full of pato award who in turn has david malukas and graham ray hall right
00:38:20behind
00:38:31welcome back to the accurate grand prix of long beach where the action is fast and frantic alexander rossi
00:38:36currently down in p15 appears to be something of a cork in the bottle running about a half a second
00:38:42off the pace at the moment will power just flew past him how long before pato award manages to do the same
00:38:52yeah tough phase of the race right now all the top six have yet to stop they started on those hard
00:38:58tires and they're going to go as long as possible maybe hope for a bit of a yellow stint to try to
00:39:02extend it so that way they can cut down how many laps they have to do on those softs which they
00:39:08eventually have to get to but right now kirkwood pulling out over the cars behind and really today
00:39:14we haven't seen anybody run more than about 10 laps all weekend on the soft tire and i don't know that
00:39:19we will see anybody try today for christian lungard he almost certainly will have to still make three
00:39:25stops uh left today as we ride on board the mission foods on board looking out the back
00:39:32just listen to christian lungard balance the throttle over the bumps here
00:39:43so that on track in the track map you can see the seven the christian lungard that's your leader 27
00:39:49of kyle kirkwood that is the leader on the alternate strategy so to speak so you got lungard who started
00:39:55on the hards running long on the hards that's strategy a that's all the top six and then strategy
00:40:01b kyle kirkwood your pole sitter started on those softs hit it early got them off pillow and mclaughlin
00:40:07so pillow essentially has moved up a few spots on that strategy in that sequence pillows won the first
00:40:13two races of the season he did so masterfully at st pete to start the year with great strategy decision
00:40:19let's listen to the team talking to their driver we are not worried about fuel no yeah we're not
00:40:24worried about fuel right now and they just told kirkwood he needs to save some so we can get around
00:40:29them that'd be a big advantage interesting you hear how calm alex pillow is behind the wheel there
00:40:35inquiring what's going on with the driver ahead is told by ganassi listen our guide the race leader
00:40:42kyle kirkwood may have to say you do not have to you can go after him boy go have some fun yeah
00:40:47that's interesting because hello pitted earlier that'll help us immensely he's not going fast enough
00:40:55kirkwood use an overtake that's the calm voice of barry wanzer on the radio to alex below these two have
00:41:02had such a strong relationship so much success together since alex joined chip ganassi racing
00:41:08so kyle kirkwood knows he's got a three-time champion behind him but kyle kirkwood also knows hey
00:41:15i've won on two different street circuits in my young indycar career streets of nashville very
00:41:21challenging and right here in long beach i think this guy's totally confident no matter who's behind
00:41:27him started on pole and you look at the lap time comparisons the last three laps pretty comparable
00:41:33kyle kirkwood who didn't take a win through the hole of 2024 as we sit on board courtesy of prefab
00:41:43sponsoring his and ready car this weekend uh didn't take a win all the way through 24 talking to him in
00:41:49the run-up to the season he said i felt much better last year i felt more complete as a driver the one
00:41:53thing i couldn't get account so we're watching uh lungard the guys that have not yet hit uh so if
00:41:59you have a little bit more pace that just covers us for them but we don't want to risk anything to do
00:42:04it is that the one thing i couldn't get was that win wants to make amends on that fascinating to hear
00:42:09the strategy that they're telling him as regards the now race leader lungard and if that voice sounds
00:42:14familiar it is brian hurda the father of colton hurda who kyle kirkwood's competing with andretti
00:42:21teammate both of them going for the win today and heard us talking about the gap the gap to christian
00:42:27lungard which sits right now at 32 seconds brian hurda would like kyle kirkwood to just get a little
00:42:34bit more of a buffer before they make their next stop so it's lungard leading from dixon and simpson
00:42:42on an entirely different strategy though kirkwood leads below we got a race of multiple strategies
00:42:49here on the streets of long beach
00:42:59yeah it's going to be super fascinating to hear the radio traffic i think that was almost a
00:43:04bluff from ones that they're telling below that he can go after andretti trying to push andretti
00:43:10into a mistake i'm sure that chip ganassi and pillow are still trying to hit that
00:43:15that's like a smack we know kirkwood is because on the onboard that red six might be more efficient
00:43:23just listening to
00:43:26stingray rob there on the onboard from carl kirkwood you could hear him lifting and coasting hugely
00:43:33into the corners he's definitely trying to hit a big number larry wilson's got in touch on
00:43:39x using the sky indycar hashtag saying are all the cars using the hybrid yes they are we haven't
00:43:44talked much about that it's the first time these cars have run at long beach with the hybrid that's
00:43:50a low voltage motor generator unit the mgu and the energy storage system consisting of 20 ultra
00:43:58capacitors both of which fit inside the bell housing located between the chevrolet and honda
00:44:04indycar series engines and options for automatic regen via braking the throttle positions manual regen
00:44:13it's quite a good system but we saw and heard about the problems they had last time out at thermal
00:44:20couldn't deploy the system and i was listening to alexander rossi they were having to sort of run
00:44:26three laps and then a lap off to cool it down as we ride on board with pato award now down to turn
00:44:35one and we heard from colton herter earlier on in the race this is quite a good circuit to run that
00:44:42battery and of course the battery and that hybrid power they can use even though they're in a fuel
00:44:49safe so it helps with their performance it helps with their balance on the car as well they've got
00:44:54unlimited activation with a maximum deployment of 415 kilojoules you can see pato ward look at the
00:45:01lights above each left and right hands there the lights will build under braking and then when he
00:45:07deploys it the lights will go down those are the hybrid lights on the right and left hand side of the
00:45:13car look you can see him using that deploying the battery now and it'll drain all the way down when
00:45:18he hits the brakes down here those lights will start to build as the regenerates charge in the hybrid
00:45:25units keep an eye on how different drivers use their hybrid where they deploy and where they regenerate
00:45:3418 of 90 christian lungard still leads he's gonna probably try and get another five or six laps
00:45:42out of these tires before he pits april 27th on fox the stars of nascar head to talladega for the biggest
00:45:52thrill ride of their year the jack links 500 at talladega april 27th on fox and as we know you love to
00:46:00watch indycar from all around the country this is a watch party happening right now uh in indianapolis and we
00:46:06cannot wait to get back to indy a little bit later on uh this month i'm going to be moving out there
00:46:12a little bit later on this month uh ready for the month of may back on track here at uh the streets
00:46:19of long beach the accurate grand prix we're talking about a great watch party uh probably no better
00:46:24position around the track than where we find jack harvey inside of turn 11 honestly outside of actually
00:46:29driving the car i feel like this is probably as good as it gets you're just watching the cars they're coming
00:46:34into here the slowest corner on the entire indy car schedule to the one of the straight longest
00:46:39straights we go to like 185 miles an hour that's a lot of the rear tires here one of the best
00:46:45overtaking zones one of the most critical corners on the entire track and honestly i'm just having a
00:46:50great time watching people fly by and also shout out to all the fans i'm looking at the grandstands
00:46:56i was actually there on friday amongst it this place is absolutely packed and i'd love to see it
00:47:01there you're absolutely right it is buzzing here in long beach for the 50th grand prix of long beach
00:47:08so much fun around the streets this weekend uh james townsend when we look at the fights out there
00:47:16and we look at who has made up position and who has lost position if you're colton herder right now
00:47:20how angry are you how do you keep it together given that you started this thing on the front row with a
00:47:24grid and now your teammate sits so much further ahead and you're down uh right in the thick of a mix of a
00:47:30battle you shouldn't well but he's in the top five on that strategy with kirkwood and plow and
00:47:36rosenquist and i think one of the things that colton hurt has been so great at is keeping his cool
00:47:41over the last couple years not having a meltdown in on the radio or behind the wheel as we ride on
00:47:48board colton hurda makes some adjustments to his brake bias knob
00:47:51he's cruising right now and he knows he just has to let things play out trust the team we don't know
00:47:57what led to this we don't know if it was a problem on pit lane maybe got blocked on an in lap who knows
00:48:02what put him in this situation but this is where he is head down he's won here before he's just got to
00:48:08click off the laps and follow the team's direction this is it head down eyes forward make this strategy
00:48:14work meanwhile race leader christian lingard with 1.6 second advantage over scott dixon with more on him
00:48:20kevin lee comfortable so that is what positive for lungard to remember this is a brand new car
00:48:26he could have started up near the front in the firestone fast six but he crashed in qualifying
00:48:31and they had to go to a spare tub today so he's learning that car but he said it feels the same
00:48:36but just in general he's still adjusting he said the car feels very different than what he had at
00:48:41ray hall under the lannigan that might be bad news for everybody else because he's finished eighth and
00:48:45third in the first two races and has an opportunity here today one of the things i noticed guys is
00:48:50that christian lingard has actually started to close the gap a little bit on kyle kirkwood remember
00:48:56before we went to break i believe it was at about 32 seconds i see the gap now right at about 31 it was at
00:49:0430 last lap so christian lingard with that clean air nobody in front he is getting the pace done
00:49:10and it's just such an unfortunate thing for him he had the mistake right here in qualifying hit that
00:49:15wall as you heard kevin say this team here late last night switching over to the spare chassis the
00:49:21spare tub and look t-bell you know what it's like as a driver you can have a spare car rebuilt by the
00:49:27same people doing the same thing with the exact same setup every car just feels a little bit different
00:49:33and this is the first chance that christian's getting to really drive this thing in anger they had
00:49:36warm-up this morning but it's always different under the pressure of the race this is going to be
00:49:40a crucial part of the race for the top six drivers who all started on the hard tire there were some
00:49:46suggestions these tires might last around 23 25 laps which would mean they'd have to be on a three
00:49:51stopper like everybody else if they could move it beyond that beyond 25 laps then they could
00:49:56theoretically have this at a two-stop race but as you say that gap back to kirkwood in seventh it needs
00:50:03to be increasing at the moment it is shrinking lungard running one minute 9.1 kirkwood also one
00:50:10minute 9.1 he's been losing about four tenths five tenths every single lap the tires obviously
00:50:16on kirkwood's car much fresher much newer a little bit more pace in them probably about 10 more laps
00:50:22james until we get into the window for that top five driver field to start coming in and then the
00:50:28question is do you go to the softs right away for a short stint how do you play it
00:50:33track's getting hotter so i don't think they're going to be able to make it on just two stops it
00:50:37looks like a three stopper for everybody today i think you push them further back if you can man
00:50:41because if you get some yellow that's going to help you later in the race so i mean these guys
00:50:46they're trying to make that fuel work and they could do it at two stops on fuel but if the tires will
00:50:51those softs last it doesn't look like anyone had faith in that happening early and the skies look
00:50:56nothing like they did at the beginning this is the sunshine you've been expecting will it really is
00:51:03dark clouds though uh earlier on this week a decal that we will see on the mclaren car for john
00:51:10edwards who sadly passed earlier this week a key part of hendrick motorsports uh right hand
00:51:15man to jeff gordon a much loved member also of our fox family
00:51:25he has the fox crew are saying this is an integral part of the race now christian lungard can do this
00:51:34on two stoppers but as i said earlier the big question mark is not the fuel it is those green
00:51:41tires that they're going to have to run later on for the drivers and runners that stopped early on
00:51:47the question mark is not the green tires it's the fuel can they hit that fuel number and even with that
00:51:53lift and coast and that fuel save number that carl kirk was driving to at the moment he's still eating
00:51:59into christian lungard he'll be low on fuel now even though he's done 24 laps on that primary hard tire
00:52:07as we head down to turn one now on board with that santino ferrucci that we're on board with had a
00:52:16torrid time in qualifying tank the wall and then had to go down the escape road and didn't make it through
00:52:24in the end qualified right at the back and for the foight cars is david malucas he's very much
00:52:33the driver that was flying the flag in qualifying right graham ray hall now on the move he is fighting
00:52:44the other foight car david malucas and look at graham ray hall with a run up the inside into turn one for
00:52:49better of it it's actually quite a quick entry into turn one there you've got to be really alongside
00:52:56in the braking zone it's too short a braking zone to make the move from that far back and david malucas
00:53:02little dave as he's known said he's going to change that to big dave when he gets his indycar win is too
00:53:10wise and too long in the tooth to get uh caught out by graham ray hall there they are fighting at the
00:53:18moment for 17th and 18th spot they got pato warden alexander rossi ahead of them they are on that
00:53:27strategy of the early stoppers been really impressed by david malucas obviously had his challenges last
00:53:33year was meant to be in the papaya then broke his wrist and then found the home elsewhere and has now
00:53:42come into 2025 with lots of promise aj foight have that technical alliance with team penske there's
00:53:48been a lot of noise around david malucas taking willpower seat at team penske in 2026 and at the
00:53:57moment as we see one of the premier cars coming out of pit lane david malucas is delivering and it's
00:54:03willpower who's been under pressure courtesy of his qualifying performances star of the race very much
00:54:11of thermal in terms of the positions that he caught up but his performance on saturday is lacking as the
00:54:21race continues here
00:54:29back to the streets of long beach and the accurate grand prix what a fantastic weekend it has been here
00:54:34so much action every single day so much entertainment an absolute festival of motorsport from historics to
00:54:42stadium super trucks we've had the lot
00:54:48and you don't have to wait long for the next race on the calendar of the ntt indy car series
00:55:01barber motorsport park may the 4th at the start of what is going to be a jam-packed month here on fox
00:55:08you can catch it all on fox of course the indy 500 come along later in the month the indy grand prix
00:55:14before that as well we can't wait but right here right now in long beach christian lungard still
00:55:20leads but the question is how much longer will these tires hold on for the first driver who started
00:55:26on the hard tires to pit off those hard tires robert schwartzmann means that only five drivers who
00:55:32started on those tires in fact it's only four now because kirkwood is up to fifth just the top four
00:55:38remain who started on the hard tire how much longer could lungard hang on let's ride and watch that'll tell
00:55:43us everything it's all about feel he's got fuel to burn for a few more laps but the balance still
00:55:49looks pretty good as i watch him lean into the power pretty heavily james what do you see i mean
00:55:53the car looks good the lap times look good i mean a 108 8 on that last lap he was three tenths quicker
00:55:59than dixon and two tenths quicker than kirkwood so he's still getting the pace out of it but he is using
00:56:04push to pass on these laps and he's not trying to pass anybody he's just trying to lap faster because
00:56:10he's probably coming to pit lane soon i just don't well it's going to be a three stopper for him so
00:56:15he might as well come now because he's catching traffic indeed he does so he'll come in refuel on
00:56:21shell 100 renewable fuel there in the number seven arrow mclaren are on board courtesy of mission today
00:56:27has led 20 of the 27 laps thus far held scott dixon takes over the lead of the race how much longer can
00:56:34scott dixon go won this race last year on a crazy strategy so much fuel saving for him and kevin
00:56:42and dixon will come in the next lap he was told let's go he's going to try to make up as much time
00:56:47and use the overcut by staying at a lap later and for christian lungard he's going to the sauce this
00:56:52time how long can he make them last fascinating stuff so full of fuel and on the soft tire we ride on
00:56:59board with kirkwood keep your eyes driver right now he's well past him already you see in the track
00:57:04map up in the corner which makes sense he was never going to come out in the lead but remember lungard
00:57:08started 12. he's going to come out behind rosenquist there that's an essentially p5 so a great jump
00:57:16through that strategy but now he's got to suffer on the softs everybody else has suffered everybody else
00:57:22has cleared the way in terms of that alternate strategy that's kyle kirkwood pillow rosenquist
00:57:28they've dumped the softs i don't know how many laps that lungard will get scott dixon now coming in for
00:57:33the same thing we'll have to see where dixon blends out relative to lungard they were battling each other
00:57:38and whether he moves on to the soft or whether he stays on the hard decisions that will determine
00:57:44the outcome of this race kevin and he's doing the same strategy as lungard he's going to get his
00:57:50mandatory stint with the softs the green sidewall fire stones on this time and what is going to be
00:57:55fascinating is to watch the blend that is a quick stop for the pnc bank crew and the honda of chip
00:58:01ganassi racing he screams down to turn one who's going to have the advantage between him and lungard
00:58:06on that strategy that stop looked faster will than the one of christian lungard so lungard is on shoreline
00:58:12that drive right now there he is dixon out when he get through before him it's going to be tight and lungard just keeps the position
00:58:23oh but it's scott mclaughlin that loses out here cold tires for dixon hot tires for mclaughlin as he tried
00:58:30into four no he's losing so much time to lungard in front although soft cold tires for dixon will become hot
00:58:36soft tires real fast that's the difference with the softer compound look for scott dixon to be
00:58:42lightning quick and go right back onto the gearbox of christian lungard and you just compare what
00:58:47we're seeing he's already starting to pull away a bit from scott mclaughlin compared to the drivers
00:58:51that we saw coming out on those hearts in the middle of a pack they were absolute sitting ducks
00:58:57purta trying to take advantage of the three being held up closing the gap there let's just take a look here
00:59:04up ahead riding on board with scott mclaughlin that is lingard to the right scott dixon cuts in no way
00:59:10through that's a one lane piece of racetrack there there's absolutely nothing mclaughlin could have
00:59:15done there had dixon been on hard tires i think he'd have cleared him no problem but those softs just
00:59:20getting up to speed but that's that's forcing dixon to push those socks hard early and that can affect how long
00:59:26they last
00:59:35body language of the cars is going to be fascinating over these laps
00:59:38for dixon and lingard with those soft tires on how hard do they push do they just blast them take the
00:59:44five laps get rid of them are they going to try and maintain them try to eat this part of the race out
00:59:50take them beyond five towards ten otherwise it's going to be what a lap 33 34 stop for them let's
00:59:56take a look at kyle kirkwood that's the honda driver spotlight just giving you some stats there
01:00:03on the young floridian who's been a winner here in long beach before from pole position looking to make
01:00:10it a second sweep of pole and wind through that famous hairpin see that hairpin kyle kirkwood's right
01:00:17hands not even on the steering wheel that's how tight it is in order to clear his leg and get the
01:00:22hands all the way over one handed it rodeo style they saw it up there on the halo graphic 171 seconds
01:00:30left of push to pass you get 200 seconds here at long beach of that push to pass it's about a
01:00:37about a 50 horsepower boost and kirkwood doing a great job maintaining the lead and still having
01:00:44170 seconds below behind with 156 rosie behind him 151 as they come up on christian rasmussen to put
01:00:52him a lap down recommend stiffer on the rear bar let us know if the front axle goes
01:01:04the voice of brian barnhart going to christian lingard saying stiffer on the rear bar that's the rear
01:01:09anti-roll bar that's essentially trying to take a little bit of rear grip away from it shift the
01:01:14balance forward he said let us know what the front axle goes so this guy is just battling understeer
01:01:20right now strategies converging kirkwood leads from pillow and rosenquist lingard and dixon fourth and
01:01:28fifth it's getting very tight
01:01:30stopped at least once lap 32 of 90 and alex pillow very close to kirkwood and that's the danger of the
01:01:45lift and coast here is you come under threat from those using their battery and hybrid behind and for
01:01:53alex pillow he's obviously stayed on the throttle longer than kirkwood what i mean by that is when we
01:01:58go on board with kirkwood he's lifting off of full throttle a long time before the braking zone a bit
01:02:05like we hear or see in formula e racing and that's because he's trying to minimize the amount of time
01:02:12he's on full throttle because he wants to fuel save he's trying to hit a number and all the while he does
01:02:17that he's got alex pillow who's still trying to do the same thing but became uh came very very close to
01:02:27to the light uh coming up the inside into turn one there so everyone has stopped kirkwood leads from
01:02:34pillow felix rosenquist is third and then you've got the likes of christian lingard and scott dixon who
01:02:40are outliers here because they have they have got that green tire on that we don't know how far they're
01:02:48going to be able to take it it's been very very interesting now to see one or two others start to
01:02:55drop into pit lane so i think that was felix rosenquist who's dropped into pit lane i think
01:03:01joseph newgarden has also pushed uh pushed the button and hit pit lane so there are runners now starting to
01:03:12opt in on their second stop and that is because they went very very early on their first stop so
01:03:22that's about right now they've done probably 30 laps or so on that tank of fuel and so they've bled the
01:03:3118.5 gallon fuel tank dry and they're coming in for new boots and more fuel as we see carl kirkwood
01:03:41and pillow still circulating all the while that they're circulating they're actually a little bit
01:03:46vulnerable and it's pillow who's jumped first and that's why we saw pillow getting racing behind
01:03:52because he knew that he was into pit lane before uh or a lap later so kirkwood continues to lead pillow
01:04:02into pit lane we've got multiple runners in now who stopped early in for their second stop and that's
01:04:09going to change the order as we saw the likes of marcus ericsson and alexander rossi struggle
01:04:16with the overcut after the first stop what are they going to do this time around and there's plenty
01:04:22of runners into pit lane i'm going to hand back to will buxton t bell and hinge and they're going to
01:04:28take us through this next set of stops
01:04:34dc indy car series on fox live from the accurate grand prix of long beach as you can see there alex
01:04:40below leaving pit lane where he has been serviced and sent on his way back on the hard tire and he
01:04:47had to do that felix rosenquist had come in from third place the question now is how much longer can
01:04:52kyle kirk would go before he comes in to take his stop at zero he's coming in the pits right now we
01:04:57guys the a leader of this race responding to what chip ganassi racing and the 10 has done so now it all
01:05:04comes down jack to the pit crews and the outlaps absolutely it does i was chatting to the team what
01:05:09they were hoping for happened alex below had to pit first they're literally now doing his pit stop no
01:05:15wing change this outlap is so critical kevin what's happening where you are waiting to see
01:05:21colton hurda he'll be the next one up near the front stopping from his position inside the top six
01:05:27everyone is satisfied as hurt is in the tire requirement except for stingray rob he has not
01:05:33run the soft green sidewalks yet everyone else likely done with the greens
01:05:38so alex polo on the front straightaway here comes kyle kirkwood here comes polo now it doesn't look
01:05:46close but kirkwood's on cold tires polo will be able to catch him very quickly over the next few
01:05:52corners but kirkwood easily with track position yeah that's a big advantage to kyle right now it
01:05:58shows you that that overcut approach going that little bit longer that one lap longer can really
01:06:04really gain you some time because i know he's still getting up to speed but that's a that's a big
01:06:10gap town so that's a nice little bobble on the pit stop for alex polo that we saw on one of the front
01:06:16tires maybe look at that polo already asking are we safe with rosenquist as well he's doing the math
01:06:24he's doing the strategy from inside the cockpit that is such an impressive thing to see right now rosenquist
01:06:32running behind polo by a good shot to erase those guys like one guard not the other strategy
01:06:37barry wands are reminding them there's other players in this race today christian lingard's
01:06:42done such a great job with that alternate strategy today running long on the hard tires
01:06:47and how is his lap time a 110.7 it's not great soft tire starting to come apart a little bit in terms
01:06:56of performance so that's something that the mclaren team needs to be studying closely and start to think
01:07:02about lingard's next stop this is it they were running one minute nines just a few laps to go
01:07:06lingard down to the 110 dixon into the 111s how much longer can they make those soft tires last
01:07:14here we are on board with christian lingard on those soft tires take a look at the wear rate on that
01:07:19right front but also we can see the gap to scott dixon he's the blue and orange car diving into
01:07:24the pits he caught some traffic there he lost a lot of time to lingard so advantage to the seven on this
01:07:31strategy now christian has to push and probably is going to come in next lap to cover scott dixon
01:07:37and kev you're down there waiting the nine so the last time dixon stayed at a lap later than christian
01:07:43lingard this time he's going to come in at least one lap earlier there's no movement in the arrow
01:07:47mclaren seven pit box at this point let's watch the pnc bank it was quick the first time but not as
01:07:52quick this time a little bobble on the right rear so they've lost a little bit of time on this stop
01:07:58very slow on that right rear don't expect to see that from the nine crew slow on the right rear slow
01:08:03on the in lap as well due to traffic so this cycle has not really worked out super well for dixon and
01:08:11the nine you see the onboard there of lungard let's see does he decide to come in this time he's entering
01:08:16turn nine dixon's going to slot out in front of scott mclaughlin right now who was running in 11th but
01:08:23he's on those hearts they are cold mclaughlin's going to be full attack
01:08:28dixon with his mirrors full of pins right up the inside and that's wonderful from scott mclaughlin
01:08:34beautiful move hard place to get it done now mclaughlin's teammate new garden trying to line
01:08:39up the six-time champ here comes new garden i see it go too easy scott being smart not defending too much
01:08:46you can lose even more lap time and make yourself more susceptible to guys like colton hert is now right
01:08:50behind dixon if you go too aggressive on defense it was that exact situation for scott dixon that
01:08:55put him in the wall here at long beach with potter award a couple years ago and possibly lost a
01:09:02championship opportunity as colton hert goes by yeah dixon being just really heads up
01:09:10oh god it's getting close there in the air fin but getting heads up tonight he's not he's racing
01:09:15everybody there you know but they are in different strategies and it's about maximizing your race time
01:09:19i'm watching the gap to kyle kirkwood for christian lungard now at 33 seconds will lungard's last lap
01:09:27of 109-0 looking pretty sporty on the sauce yeah he's found some time in it wonder if it's just
01:09:32started to plateau maybe been able to find something that's going to keep them alive for a few laps longer
01:09:38he's one of the fastest drivers on track at the moment lungard despite the age of those soft tires and
01:09:43look it's working out for him we reckon it's about somewhere between 37 to 39 seconds lost through a
01:09:49pit cycle and right now he's running about that gap to just behind felix rosenquist so he would slot
01:09:56into an effective fourth as we see mclaughlin clear the lockdown car now of kiffin simpson lungard's
01:10:02still out there trying to just make that gap even bare but he's got let's see if he's using push to
01:10:07pass as he gets closer to maybe his next pit stop yes you see it there green lit up
01:10:13he's burning that extra 50 horsepower of boost we expect christian lungard to come in this lap clean
01:10:21air in front of him that lap last lap still a 1094. short stop with fuel so uh it'll be quick be ready
01:10:30to go we're boxing this lap and that's a really important point because he's not running a full
01:10:34fuel stint they're going to be waiting on the tires not the fuel to fill because you don't need
01:10:40a full tank it's already about half full right now and because of that it puts that much more
01:10:45pressure on the pit crews normally tires take four or five seconds fuel six seven now we're going to
01:10:50have a half tank of fuel to get in it is all on the four guns and the jack person for the seven machine
01:10:59high pressure
01:11:03lungard coming down to our man kevin lee and remember this pit lane is challenging because it
01:11:08is angled it's difficult to get the fuel squared in perfectly and this stop needs to be really
01:11:13really quick because it won't take very long to fuel tires are done fuel is done christian lungard
01:11:19is out how does he compare to nixon a little longer than they probably wanted there on the left rear
01:11:25just a small hesitation but that can mean everything you're crawling at 45 miles an hour it's so
01:11:29difficult as a driver to not lose your cool off the button now there goes below so that's an effective
01:11:36third in the race wow he's got rosenquist coming i think hard behind him
01:11:42he's going to have to fight to keep the meyers shank racing machine of rosenquist behind he's already
01:11:46now on his gearbox this is going to be the battle for effectively third rosenquist with tires up to
01:11:52temperature will he have a look at the inside like the doctor did oh he's close he's really really close
01:11:58on this short little run down to the left hand of rosenquist chucks it on the inside says thank you very
01:12:04much and will disappear off into the distance what a great start to the season for this guy felix
01:12:10rosenquist excellent from the team in both qualifying and race performance rosenquist starting off with a
01:12:17seventh a fifth and now as james said podium in sight stingray rob leads from robert schwartzman
01:12:24they on a completely different
01:12:31i'm coming right away
01:12:38all in my head
01:12:44all in my head
01:12:48all in my head
01:12:50all in my head
