00:00Hey everyone, so this week we mark Black Maternal Health Week. In 2018, as a United States Senator, together with Congresswoman Alma Adams and the support of many of the leaders in this movement, I led a resolution to recognize April 11 through April 17 as Black Maternal Health Week.
00:20We established this week to highlight this urgent matter, to push for increased action, and to celebrate the success of our work so far. In 2019, I introduced the Maternal Care Act, one of the first bills to target racial disparities and implicit bias in the maternal health care system.
00:41In 2020, I introduced the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act to improve maternal nutrition, expand affordable housing, and include more doulas and midwives in our maternal health care workforce, because we know a community-based approach works.
00:59And as Vice President, I brought our fight to the White House and called on states to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage from two months to 12 months. At the time, only three states were doing it. By the time we left the White House, 48 states, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, now provide this life-saving care to over one million new mothers and babies.
01:27This progress and more was possible because of you, the organizers, advocates, health care professionals, elected officials, who for years fought to lift up the voices and the stories of Black women and their families.
01:46And today, we are clear-eyed. We have a lot of hard work ahead. Clear-eyed because in this moment, Black maternal health initiatives and women's health research are under attack.
01:59We refuse to accept this. Our charge continues that the Black maternal health crisis be treated with a sense of urgency. Our charge continues to stay vigilant, knowing our cause is just.
02:16So we will continue to fight for a future in which every woman, regardless of her race, where she lives, or how much money she has, will have access to the health care she needs and so rightly deserves.
02:33So I thank you all for the work you do every day. Please take care of yourselves, and I'll see you out there. Take care.
